I'm writing this article from a hotel room in Boston. As I'm gazing out my window, I've gained a new perspective on what a long winter could be. While the roads are clear here now, the snow piles left behind by the plows are still five to six feet deep, and the lakes and ponds are still frozen solid.

The locals laugh at our deepest snow of the year of nine inches.

Several hardy skippers from ECSC have had their boats in for several weeks now. Indy may not be Key West, but it ain’t too bad weather-wise.

We have a full roster for the social events this summer with our first event, the Mothers’s Day Brunch, hosted by Bill Harrington on Sunday, May 8th. Bill has been hosting this event for 17 years and makes it look effortless. If you call him now to help out, he can put you to work and really make it look effortless!

Don’t forget to come out to help open up the Club on Saturday, April 2nd. This is usually more a social event than a "work" party.

Happy Spring Break!

It’s finally here...what you have been waiting for all winter...SPRING and SAILING ! The Spring Series gets underway THIS MONTH! Sundays start first on April 24th with the 1st flag at 1:30pm. Two races will be run (there better be wind), each scored separately for series awards. Wednesdays begin April 27th with the first flag at 6:50pm. Principal Race Officers and Safety for the first Sunday are: April 24th B. Cameron and N. Mason; May 1st Chris Cunningham and TBD. Wednesday’s April 27th and May 4th Schaubs & Best/Dolders (both weeks). The complete assignments will be finalized in April and printed in the May issue of the telltales. A tentative schedule will be posted soon on the website.

The Notice of Race (NOR) for the Spring Series Racing will be posted on the website. The Series Sailing Instructions (SI) will be distributed at the Competitors’ Meeting on Wednesday, April 20th 7:00pm at the Club and otherwise available on-line or in the official race bulletin board on the race shed. After the Competitors’ Meeting on the 20th, there will be a hands-on demonstration on how to use the race equipment. We’ll go down to the RC boat and run you through a “mock” race start; using all the flags and clocks and show you how to do it the proper way. This will be good for everyone who is running a race in the spring series...whether you’ve done it before or not. Please try to attend.

Before you race your first race of the season, we ask that you please fill out a Registration form declaring your boat configuration and sail selection for each of the spring series. These will be available at the competitors’ meeting or from the race committee boat before any race.

RACE MEETINGS: Only one left...on Wednesday, April 20th on Boat Preparation. This meeting will be held at the Club. April is a great time to get your boat ready for the year. We’ll be discussing bottom preparation, rig tuning, and other assorted tips to get your boat race ready.

OTHER NEWS: J-24 fleet 131. The elected fleet captain is Charlie Brehob. Congratulations Charlie.

The Mayor’s Cup Regatta will be held May 21-22 with a welcome party on Friday May 20th at 7:00pm. Notice of Race and Registration Form will be printed in the next issue of the Telltales. Mark your calendar now!

Smooth Sailing......

Something to Think About
Did you know:
A dime has 118 ridges around the edge
A cat has 32 muscles in each ear
A crocodile cannot stick out its tongue
A dragonfly has a life span of 24 hours
A goldfish has a memory span of three seconds

Horse Latitudes
Q Why is the region at about 30deg in both northern and southern hemispheres called the horse latitudes?
A Tradition states that sailors gave the region of the subtropical high the name "horse latitudes" because ships relying on wind power stalled; fearful of running out of food and water, sailors threw their horses overboard to save on provisions.

Junior Sailing
Our junior sailors wish to say "Thank You !"

Many years ago, two things came together in my life. I had money to buy a sailboat and water to sail it on...a Hobie 14 and a brand new Eagle Ocean. I read the Hobie sailing manual and was off flying a hull. We all were green and had a ball sailing and building Eagle Creek Sailing Club. Many gifted people gave time and leadership to the starting of the Club. Everyone did what they thought needed to be done.

We were lucky to have Jim Reeder as he ran the Club and built it to what it is today. John Storer kept the locals at bay. We are here because a lot of people gave their time and name to help the Club climb to become the very best in the country. Over the years, I have belonged to five other clubs and none come close. So what makes Eagle Creek great? It's the people--some one will always help raise a mast or launch a boat, and if you ask, every one will tell you how to sail better. I am sure you don't even need a boat to sail here as someone will give you a ride (crewing).

Jim Rees came out and built a playground, among other things he did for the Club. My son and wife enjoyed coming out more after that. We had a party and built the old shelterhouse in the early 70s...many engineers, literally, and few Indians. Hobies were on the beach two deep and went around the cove. Parties lasted through the night--boy am I old now.

To the newer Club members...always say "hi" to everyone if you don't know them and introduce yourself. This is how you gain a lifetime of friends and build bonds that will bend but not break.

Racing is a course in learning about yourself and growing past it. There is honor in racing that is earned not given, as well as respect. Sailing gives us an honorable feeling when we race. We learn not to give up but try harder after making mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, but we learn to keep our head in our boat and not dwell on boo-boos. If you want to learn how to race, crew for someone who races.

ECSC is the best kept secret in sailing, the best bargain, and offers the best friends. People around the world may never know what we have here, but we do!

Rick, sailing in Indy…..
