It’s been an interesting winter season.

Can’t say it started all too well for me...that huge headache of solving this trailer parking thing. But, things have really been evolving in a direction I doubt anyone foresaw.

It all started when Club members Joy & John decided to open a bar/restaurant near our Club...the Boathouse Grill at 56th & High School Road. Shortly afterwards, the bi-weekly gathering that a few of the honorable old-timers had been doing was moved there. This was quickly followed by the racers moving their winter rules/organizing meetings there...also concurrent with the “honorable sailors” gatherings.

Club Stats
Memberships 248
Slip Waiting List 51 (17 Passed)
Wet Slips 166
Water Level 788.90 (790 Normal)
I can’t vouch for the quality of the race discussions that were held, but it seems attendance was great and smiles were quite common! It appears that the chair parties continued strong through the winter without having to bring our own chairs! Thanks members John & Joy!

Speaking of services that Club members perform, of the 250 some memberships in our Club, I suspect there’s quite a gambit of professions. With an annual rate of less than 10% turnover of memberships each year, it can be concluded that members on the average stay in the Club over ten years before moving on.

When looking for help in your life and needing services from others, one of deciding factors for selection has much to do with reputation. When you know the person you are about to hire (or do business with) is going to be around you and your fellow Club members for years to come, there’s a bit more confidence that quality work will be performed and guaranteed.

As such, a Member Services page is being added to our website. Check it out here. Should be an interesting addition to our little slice of heaven on Eagle Ocean.

WANTED...A FEW GOOD MEN & WOMEN!!!!!!!!!!

HELLO SPRING!!!!

It looks like we can look at the calendar and safely say we are finally at the point of getting to the Club and  setting sail.

I know the race chairs have been holding race rules meetings over the winter months and all of our racers are raring to get out there on the water!

The social dates are all set up for the coming year (as posted here in the Telltales) and before we know it, we will be gathering for our favorite brunches and burger-turning events.

I do have positions open for hosting a couple of these events and would really like to see some new faces step forward to help us with these.

My husband, Greg, and I have worked volunteering at several of these events over the last 20 years. We have also hosted the 4th of July Cookout for 4 or 5 years.  We had great times meeting new people, laughing, and working with fellow Club members while sharing work duties and earning work credits.

As social chair, I have past Club records of what we need for each event, how much food to buy, the budget, etc.  The Club provides all paper goods, napkins, utensils, cups etc. and monies needed to purchase all supplies.  We send you a packet of information to help make it easy for you to host the social and provide you with all necessary information to make it a great event.

Please consider chairing an event this year and/or helping at a social! If you are interested, please contact me at 566-0353 or email me at lindajohnson@indy.rr.com.

For an additional viewpoint, please read the following submission.

See you soon on the water!!!!!

Pass The Baton
Larry January

Twenty or more years ago, I embarked on my ECSC culinary career as a Memorial Day burger-flipper.

That first burger began my destiny from burger-flipper trainee, to head chef, to assistant Social chair, Social chair, Ship’s Store Captain, Vice Commodore, and Commodore. That first burger introduced my wife and me to many many Club members who have become close friends.

Back in those days long long ago, charcoal briquette burger-flippers had to be real men – not the weenie gas grill flippers of today. They had to adorn themselves with protective gear to save arm hair, leg hair, and eyebrows. They endured inhaling charcoal toxins now labeled by some politicians as dangerous second-hand smoke.

Through the past twenty or more years, by my side or I by theirs were Jack and Karen Hale, Bob Glenn, some years Greg Johnson and a host of other volunteers. We learned to cook burgers to any degree of doneness – burnt on the outside, raw in the middle, well done to very very well done...depending on how out-of-control our charcoal fire had gotten. We never lost a member because the next year, everyone was back...with the Knapp family heading the line.

I had thought several years ago that I had successfully passed the Baton off to Jack and Karen Hale, but like a boomer-rang it has returned to me. Now is the time to pass that “Baton” again. I have always vocally maintained that the Club always needs new blood and fresh ideas.

We have gained on average fifteen to twenty new members annually over the past several years. CATCH – “THE BATON” - it belongs to you now. We old guys will still be around to lend you a hand and pass on our old secret recipes on burning those burgers.

It will not be hard to find us for help, we are the ones with the singed eyebrows, no leg hair or arm hair, and who are now sporting a distinguished grey hair look. If you care to host the Memorial Day cookout or assist, please call either Linda Johnson or me to volunteer.

It's that time of year again we have all been waiting for, sailing season! Two boats are already in their slips and I saw a couple of Lasers out sailing yesterday (brrrr).

Don't forget the 9am April 1st Club opening work party with April 15th as a weather-related backup. Everyone is welcome...to help clean all the plant/flower beds, distribute the new mulch, and plant trees in the upper field.

Notes:
All of the slips have now been assigned. There were 11 that turned over to new tenants and 12 that were subleased. If you haven't heard from me by now, check the wait list (somewhere herein) to see how close to the top you are. Thanks to both Rich Fox and Bob Hickok for their assistance in this whole effort.

All boats and trailers are to be out of the roped-in parking lot below the shelter (the car corral) before the Mother's Day brunch on May 14th.

The water will be turned on when we can expect no more freezing weather. This year it will most likely be in the second week of April.

Since there are more and more Club members buying kayaks, we are going to try to fix up the old HM shed for "inside" storage...and maybe a little extra security as well.

A-Dock will be moved over so trailers will have less of a chance of dropping off the ramp while launching.

No repairs can be done on the ramp until the water level gets very low and the temp is above 50 degrees.

Something to Think About
During any single race, many tacks are performed. Therefore the difference between good and bad tacking or even between very good and acceptable tacking can lead to big differences in apparent boat speed. If a boat loses (or gains) one boat length on each tack during a race, it is not hard to see how much distance can be lost (or gained) by perfecting your tacking technique. Improving your tacking is easy to do; it can be practiced at any time, by yourself or in a group. Practice the tack mentally in several steps, and then practice it out on the water...gradually building it up into one fluent motion.

When sailing upwind, the boat that reaches the windward mark first is normally the boat that has taken the best route up the beat as dictated by wind shifts – in short, by taking the shortest route possible. Offwind, the speed of the boat has more importance than distance sailed. Always steer for clear water and clean wind. Disturbed water and wind can completely destroy downwind performance, so a route should steer clear of all the other boats and obstructions. You may find yourself taking a very roundabout route to the leeward mark, but if you can maintain full speed all way while others are only traveling at 50% speed, you will obviously get there quicker. Always try to sail as fast as possible.

Tyler Andrews is on the West Coast racing a laser and Jason Hubbard just got back from Miami. No result is known as of this date.

It’s finally here...what you have been waiting for all winter...SPRING and SAILING!

The Spring Series gets underway THIS MONTH! Sundays start first on April 23rd with the 1st flag at 1:30pm. Two races will be run (there better be wind). This year both Sunday races are scored together as one series. Wednesdays begin April 26th with the first flag at 6:50pm. Race assignments will be finalized in April and printed in the May issue of the telltales. A tentative schedule will be posted soon on the website.

The Notice of Race (NOR) for the Spring Series Racing will be posted on the website. The Series Sailing Instructions (SI) will be distributed at the Competitors’ Meeting on Wednesday, April 19th 7pm at the Club and otherwise available on-line or in the official race bulletin board on the race shed. After the Competitors’ Meeting on the 19th, there will be a hands-on demonstration on how to use the race equipment. We’ll go to the RC boat and run through a “mock” race start; using all the flags and clocks and show how to do it the proper way. This will be good for everyone who is running a race in the spring series; whether you’ve done it before or not. Please try to attend.

Before you race your first race of the season, we ask that you please fill out a Registration form declaring your boat configuration and sail selection for each of the spring series. Forms will be available at the competitors’ meeting or from the race committee boat before any race.

    Race Meetings
Only one left...on Wednesday, April 19th on Boat Preparation. This meeting will be held at the Club. April is a great time to get your boat ready for the year. We’ll be discussing bottom preparation, rig tuning, and other assorted tips to get your boat race ready.

    Weekend Warrior Regatta
Wayne Myers is hosting this year's Weekend Warrior Regatta on April 29th...the first regatta of our home season. Click here for the NOR.

    Trailer Parking
    Comm E

Yes...you read through almost the entire Webtales with no mention of what to do with your trailer after you launch your boat. I wish we had a good answer for you...understanding we're only weeks or days away from launching.

We are still in the process of garnering an area inside the Park for the bulk of our trailers. For now, after launching your boat, just park your trailer in the same spot it was during the winter. We will post notices at the Club when we finally get resolution...for sure, by no later than April 15th.

Sorry for any inconveniences this year and your patience would be very welcome.
