Well, let’s see: Purdue and Indiana (and Notre Dame and Butler) have all lost their bid to be National Champions in Basketball, last weekend I-65 was clogged with spring break traffic, and somewhere in south Alabama, the Red Buds and the Dog Woods are just starting to bloom. Must be time for work parties!

Spring, so long in coming, is here by the calendar and soon will be here in fact. It is time to clean up the Club grounds and get the race equipment ready. Work party volunteers are always welcome and there will be plenty of work to go around. Details are elsewhere in this newsletter.

Club Stats
Memberships 226
Slip Waiting List 34 (32 Passed)
Wet Slips 166 plus 10 temp
Water Level 790.21 (790 Normal)
Lake Acreage 1,360 Total (850 south end)
Within a few weeks, it will also be time to pull the covers off and start cleaning up the boats. While we do the work, I would ask that everybody keep Mother Nature in mind. I don’t think that soap and water hurts much, but we do use some nasty chemicals and paints from time to time, and, of course, there is always the gas and oil for the motors. Let’s all make an effort to keep that stuff off our ground and out of our water.

One of the great things about spring at the Club is watching the members give one another a hand in prepping the boats. One guy trying to raise a mast is a chore (but, it can be done). Three guys make the job, not a snap, but easier and safer. Also, there are usually “old hands” around to help with rigging issues, and tips for newer sailors about everything from the best polishing goop to easier launching.

What a great time of year!

As I write this article, the rain is falling and plants are starting to peek up from the ground. The temps are more moderate and brochures for lawn care arrive daily in the mail. The Club cleanup is this coming weekend and race preparations are ongoing.

These are all the signs that we are getting very close to being back out on the water and gathering together again for a great sailing season.

Social is purchasing two new grills to replace the ones on the Club grounds that are worn out.

All social functions are scheduled and will be kicking off in May. See the social schedule for times and dates.

Just let me know if you would like to earn work credits for any upcoming events and volunteer.

See you soon….on the water.

It's that time of year again that we have all been waiting for...sailing season! Several boats are in the water already. Oh, and speaking of water, it is up to normal spring pool. By the time you read this, we will have completed our annual Club opening work party (weather permitting). Plans include planting trees in the upper field, cleaning all the plant/flower beds, distributing the new mulch, cleaning the beach, cleaning the upper shelter, etc, etc, etc.

Slip Assignments
The slip assignments have been completed. There were 22 that turned over to new tenants. We had quite a few to do. Thanks, Pete Combs, for very timely info...and Bill Harrington for his help in completing this task. Also, those that put in a slip change request were honored with what we had available. So, say hello to your new dock neighbors this 2008 sailing season!

Slip Subleases
This season we have 11 slips that are available for sub-lease. As of today, I only have 1 subleased and I have reached the end of our slip wait list. This is a great opportunity for new members to join and have a slip in their first season. If you know any interested sailors, have them contact our membership chair, Pete Combs. These slips will be offered on a first-joined basis, so don't delay.

Dry Slip Parking
Dry parking assignments have been completed and are posted on the sail loft shed and in the bulletin board in the main shelter house. I will work on getting both our dry and wet-slip assignments available on our web site shortly. If I did not assign you a dry parking spot, it is probably because you did not list your boat on your membership dues statement. Remember, there is no additional charge for a boat in dry parking (on a trailer), but if you don't tell the Club (me) about it, we can't assign you a spot.

Right: New Hobie Wave in stock at Sailboats, Inc.

Other Club Notes
The water will be turned on when we can expect no more freezing weather. This year it will most likely be in the second week of April. The high-pressure sprayer has not been turned on yet, but I expect it will be on during the first couple weeks of April (weather permitting). The key cores for the locks will be changed around the second week of April. Please keep using the old ones until they don't work. . . .then use the new ones. All boats and trailers are to be out of the roped-in parking lot below the shelter (the car corral) before the Mother's Day brunch on May 11th.

Wet Slip Wait List
All the members on the list passed this year, but check out the Slip Wait List below anyway. If you spot anything fishy, give me a call!

It’s finally here...what we have been waiting for all winter: SPRING and SAILING! The Spring Racing Series gets underway THIS MONTH!!

New This Year
This season, we will be racing on SATURDAYS at 1:30pm instead of SUNDAYS!

Plus, we will only be racing one race that day. We wanted to encourage those who are participating in the Saturday sailing classes to come on out and put their knowledge into practice.

Racers and non-racers alike are encouraged to participate in Race Committee Duty. It is exciting to see the action up close and there is always room for “one more” on the committee boat. There are only a few dates on the race committee schedule that are still open for volunteers, so step-up for your fellow racers! Work credits, however, will be reserved for those who chair or assist in the regattas.

Above: New Hunter 25 in stock at Sailboats, Inc.

Date To Remember
  • Saturday April 5 — 9:00am-12:00(?) Racing Work Party. All are invited and work credits will be recorded
  • Saturday April 19 — 12:00pm On the Water Review. RC Duties, Committee Boat, and RIB Boat Operations
  • Wednesday April 23 — 6:50pm Competitors Meeting at the Shelter House
  • Wednesday April 30 — 6:50pm First Wednesday Race (Maxey & crew)
  • Saturday May 3 — 1:30pm First Saturday Race (Mike Gray & crew)
  • Wednesday May 7 — 6:50pm Second Wednesday Race (Graef & crew)
  • Saturday May 10 — 1:30pm Second Saturday Race (need RC)

    Mayor's Cup Regatta
    May 17-18!!!

Jeff Drake and his crew have been working hard all winter planning this event...which is open to racers, members, and their guests. This will be a first-class weekend full of food, fun, and RACING!! We are expecting 50-60 boats from all over the Midwest. We would like to provide spectator boats for our corporate sponsors, so please contact Jeff, Janet, or Rob if you could help. More info regarding the regatta is available on the website.

  • Bailer's Tips & More
    The Bailer

Here it is April 1st-ish, celebrating April Fools Day by pondering my navel history. I have spent two months before, beside, and behind the mast of the Queen Anne’s Revenge pondering not only my navel, but also as I try to recall...other things. Things like, well, Why does my boat smell like old socks? Why does my boat’s hull have a five o’clock shadow? Why won’t people listen to me when I tell them what they should do? Why is it that I am the only one who laughs at my jokes? When will spring come so I can spend my days as an active Club know-it-all? Why do Club members look at one another and roll their eyes when I tell them all about how I taught Joshua Slocum how to sail? Why am I second-guessing myself when I should be doling out tips?

Right: Ladies Hoodie Sweatshirt available in our Ship's Store

Why? Because I was hired at a great expense to the Club to offer sound, sane, advice on sailing, life, diet , etiquette, and everything in-between. Finally! I shake off winter and am here for you, my friends. I am here to help you with all of your problems and answer some of your questions...offering solid answers to all questions I feel I can answer convincingly.

1: Your boat smells like old socks because you need to air it out (Geez!). If you left cushions in your cabin and there is black mold growing on them, well do something about it, for crying out loud!

2: Your hull looks like Bogey in the African Queen because you need to sand her down and put some new bottom paint on her. Hire someone if you are too lazy. If you do nothing, that’s fine...you can grow your own sea anchor which sometimes beats lifting a finger (or paying someone to lift theirs).

3: People do not always want to be told what they should do...so lead by example, Fool.

4: Lay off the grog and you may not get your own jokes either.

5: Who knows what spring has to offer; just get off your lazy arse and visit your boat, your Club, and best of all, your friends!

6: You are impossibly old and no one is going to believe some of the things you have done in your life. So, it's their loss...there's an April Fool born every minute.

7: Get on with your life, right or wrong! Strive for right.

Spring is upon us and so brings action. Where there is action, therein lies danger. I will do my best to answer all of your questions. Submit all questions to whomever is in charge of this newsletter.

    Safety & Education
    Wayne Myers
    Ki Hickok

    Notes From Coach Ki
I keep thinking to myself - it’s that time of the year again. And then I see four inches of snow on the ground and think to myself again...only in Indiana!

The time is now and I hope you are all getting your wetsuits out because the water is very cold. I know there are some good times in store for many of you juniors this summer, but there is something I would like to remind you of before we all get started in the sailing season...and that is our safety. Now, you all probably heard about the Hobie Sailors that tipped over last week on our Lake and didn't have any life jackets. Now, that just makes me sad. I would hate to see that happen to one of our Club members (or anyone on Eagle Ocean for that matter). So, don't ever forget those life jackets when you go out for a sail!

Above: Vest available in our Ship's Store

I hope many of you are ready for a sailing lesson because I am ready to help in any way I can. I hope we can have many Saturday and Sunday classes for those of you interested. Don't forget, it’s free for you members. If you need extra help, I am always available for a private lesson. I also want to mention that I would love to lend out my services to help anyone who needs setting up their boat and/or cleaning it (317-414-4705 cell).

I greatly appreciate what the Club and all its members have done for me, the other past juniors, and for many of the juniors now and to come...for supporting and all of encouragement in the education of sailing. I know I could have never done so much in sailing and might not be sailing at all if it wasn't for this Club, my dad, Lady J, and many others. It's the money that goes into educating and the time many of you have spent in the education of anyone wanting to learn to sail. I have learned so much and have been to some places that I never thought I would go. I am proud to call Eagle Creek Sailing Club MY sailing club.

    Thanks!

    Ponderances
Small boats accelerate the learning curve...the time it takes to get a feeling for the boat. If you make a mistake in a little boat, it’s going to slow down right away. In a larger boat with all of its momentum, a mistake might not be apparent.

    Notes:

    Other Junior News
From an E-Mail message: The Fisher's family should be joining our Club this month. Welcome aboard Hannah (past Junior Champion in the Bay Week Laser Radial division) and John who recently moved from the Optimist class to the Laser. Good Luck to you guys this year...

I’ve had a lot of calls on availability of using Club Lasers this year. Glad to see the support in the class. As always, the kids get their choice 1st. but there should be enough good boats left this year. The best way to find out is this Sunday at practice.

Right: Old Event T-Shirts available in our Ship's Store

    Thank You
And, most importantly, to all of the members of ECSC who made donations to the Junior Sailing Fund this year...a large rousing THANK YOU!

    Something To Think About
I was at a meeting last month in which I brought up the subject of our young sailors being the ones who run our Club in the next 20 years. Although that comment was well taken, a better comment was voiced:

These kids will be the sailors who BUY YOUR BOAT.

    Hmmmmmm.....
