New Member Regatta

The ECSC Race Committee and Membership Committee have joined together to offer a new and fun activity for our membership – the New Member / New Racer Regatta.

The Inaugural New Member / New Racer Regatta will be held on Sunday, June 14 and consist of a series of up to 3 races. Our number one objective with this Regatta is to build camaraderie by introducing new members to our existing members, and help new members feel more welcome to our Club. At the same time, we want to members who have never previously raced before at ECSC to become acquainted with the Club’s Racing program and feel highly encouraged and motivated to participate in the Wednesday and Super Sunday events.

Right: Water Level at Our Club

For a boat to be eligible to race in the New Member / New Racer Regatta, the only requirement is that there must be at least ONE New ECSC Member on board (a new member is defined as an individual who joined after March 1, 2007). Or, the boat must have at least ONE member on board who has never participated (skippered or crewed) in an ECSC race or regatta.

There is no registration fee for the event and prizes will be awarded.

At the end of the day, this Regatta will be successful if we have a good turnout and if it helps new members to feel more welcomed and involved in future races or other Club activities!

The NOR will be posted by the end of April with more details to be published in the near future.

If you do not want to race, but can offer to help out with Race Committee, please contact Rich Fox at rich_fox@yahoo.com or 317-815-8599.

Something To Think About
  • If money doesn’t grow on trees, why do banks have branches?
  • What disease did cured ham have?
  • Why do we say we “slept like a baby” when babies wake up every hour and half?
  • Why do alarm clocks “go off” when they start making Noise?
  • Why do we yell “heads up” when we should be yelling “heads down”?

    Right: More Pics

  • Why is it called quicksand when it sucks you down very, very slowly?
  • When French people swear, do they say, “Pardon my English”?
  • Why is it called the Department of the Interior when they are in charge of everything outdoors?
  • Why are they called marbles if they’re made out of glass?
  • What color hair do bald men put on their driver’s license?
  • How do you know when it’s time to tune your bagpipes?
  • If practice makes perfect, and nobody’s perfect, then why practice?
  • Why do we put our suits in a garment bag and our garments in a suitcase?
  • How can something be both “new” and “improved”?
  • Why do we shut up, but quiet down?
  • How did the “Keep Off the Grass” sign get there in the first place?
  • Don’t squat with your spurs on.
  • Never slap a man who’s chewin’ tobacco.
  • There’re two theories to arguin’ with a women. Neither one works.

It’s finally here...what we have been waiting for all winter: SPRING and SAILING! The Spring Racing Series gets underway THIS MONTH!!

    New This Year
We are introducing the SUPER SUNDAY SERIES! This is one long series of racing which will occur the first Sunday of each month beginning May 3rd to October 4th...six Sundays in all. The start time, 1:30pm, will remain the same, but we will race as many races as possible with no starts after 4:00pm. The usual parameters regarding fleets, throwouts, etc. will apply. There will be prizes awarded for that day, as well as hardtack and grog. This is sort of like a mini-regatta.

Right: Stored Picnic Tables Awaiting Retrieval

    I-LYA Junior Traveler Series Regatta
ECSC has been selected to host this one-day event that could bring as many as 100 young sailors to our waters, Saturday, June 13th. Rick Graef is the Chairperson. He will be assembling groups to assist in various capacities in the very near future. This will be your chance to be a part of the excitement!

    Work Credits
Racers and non-racers alike are encouraged to volunteer for the many projects on this year’s agenda. The racing work party is Saturday, April 4th, 9:00-12:00. We will be setting up the RC boats and gear. We must also move the RIB Shore Station in order to make room for the heavy equipment that is coming in to fix the hill. We might need shovels for that project. We will also begin to make changes to the new(old) pontoon boat, under Jim Wolfinger’s direction. Bring drills, drivers, saws, sanders, extension cords, and eye protection.

    Mayor's Cup Regatta
    May 16-17!!

This will be a first-class weekend full of food, fun, and RACING!! We are expecting a contingent of Hobie Waves, U20’s, and Highlanders from lakes near and far...as well as the usual suspects from Eagle Creek. This event is open to racers of all skill levels. All Club members and their guests are invited!

    Bailer's Tips & More
    The Bailer

Bailer regrets advising cheating while racing (See previous Telltales). Shame on Bailer! Bailer was caught off guard, in other words, Bailer is making up excuses.

Bailer thinks (Note: How many times will Bailer refer to himself in the third person...could be the making of a fun game). Bailer, are you doing this Club justice by lying, cheating, and stealing? Bailer thinks he may have mixed up the order of his self-accused offenses, but at the same time does not think this negates the validity of Bailer's own accusations.

Right: Another Water Level Pic Tables

Bailer was heard speaking to another Club member and through the spray of peanuts and beer, Bailer thinks he said, "Hey, get the water back! Hey, where is all my valuable H20 (Hydrogen, Carbon, and Oxygen...Kinda of like WD-40 but without some molecules)?"

And, well, Bailer feels he should rebuild himself in the next few days and then he will turn his attention to the Club.

Bailer has plenty of water stored to help bring back the ocean, however his water is caustic and in many countries illegal. What Bailer intended, by his most recent screed was, let's get on with it! Let's fix this mess and move on to the next mess. Life is a challenge and Bailer has proven that a man left to his own devices can complicate life even more than it needs to be!

So it goes, "The dogs may bark, but the caravan moves on."

    Sail on....Sail on!!

It’s April and we’re looking forward to the delivery of some new boats in a few days.

We are now a dealer for Com-Pac Yachts, and we decided to start out with two boats to stock, the Picnic Cat (14') and the Sun Cat (17'). They are both day-sailers. How often do you sleep on your boat anyway? They are designed to launch and go sailing very quickly. We are excited to see them, they will be a different type of boat than we’ve had here before. Please stop in to check them out.

Right: RJ at the Chicago Boat Show

We now have all four of the R/S boats from the APB line. R/S stands for Racing Sailboats, and APB is All Purpose Boats. The smallest is the Tera...a great starter boat for one person (even a fairly small person). We also have the Q’ba, next up in size. The Feva which is good for one or two people has an asymmetrical spinnaker, and the largest, the Vision...good for two or three (also with a kite).

Of course, we also carry Catalina and Precision brands, and the Hobie line of very fun products.

Our spring service schedule is running “on time,” so this year we are better set to work in any last minute repair work. Hopefully we’ll have water under our docks soon to get everybody launched and in their slips.

We can’t wait. See you soon!

    Ask Sharky

    Dear Sharky,

I have a new girl friend and we are having a lot of fun. The only bad thing is that it is cutting into my sailing time. She is not into sailing, like I am and she says that she is prone to sea sickness. I have taken her sailing a few times on other peoples boats and she has had no problems...although she took Dramamine and we stayed in the Bay. She even ordered one of those electronic wrist gizmos, so I guess she is trying. I can see where this might be a problem in the future. What do you think? Should I jump ship and try to find a new partner or stick it out?

    Signed: ex Solo Sailor

    ===============

    Ahoy Ex Solo Sailor

As Jimmy Buffett says, it's a fine line between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Sounds like you have got a party in your pants and need to set the proper course via the confusion compass to rid your crew of this form of love sickness of the sea. Mix one part ginger (which is said to help with sea sickness) along with a steady gaze at the horizon...should help with the vertigo.

Try the electronic wrist gizmo she purchased in the bedroom first and then build her confidence to assure it will work on the high seas. A supply of air sickness bags for her and a case of rum for you is a Cupid's cure for time together on the love boat.

Finally, begin doing what you want to do now. We are not living in eternity. We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand, and melting like a snowflake. Relationships like the wind are give and take, so adjust your sails and enjoy the ride.

    ===============

    Dear Sharky,

Why do they call it a cockpit?

The first "cockpits" were actual pits in the ground constructed (to the extent that one "constructs" a pit) to house "cockfights" to the death between game cocks (essentially very belligerent chickens).

The term came to be applied to the rear part of the lowest deck, the orlop, of a fighting ship (orlop is from Dutch overloop, a covering). During a battle, it became the station for the ship’s surgeon and his mates because it was relatively safe and least subject to disturbance by the movements of the ship.

Like all lower-deck spaces, it was confined, crowded, and badly lit. During a battle, it was also noisy, stinking, and bloody. All this reminded people of a real cockpit, hence the name. About 200 years ago, on 21 October 1805, Admiral Lord Nelson died in the cockpit of HMS Victory during the battle of Trafalgar.

The move to today’s sense came through its use for the steering pit (or well) of a sailing yacht, which also started to be called the cockpit in the nineteenth century. This was presumably borrowed from the older term because it was a small enclosed sunken area in which a coxswain was stationed. The word was cockswain to start with, he being the swain, or serving man, who was in charge of a cock, a type of ship’s boat. From here, it moved in the early twentieth century to the steering area of an aircraft, and later still to other related senses.

Until Next Time...Fins to the Left!

Please welcome members that have joined since our last TellTales:

Mark and Jane Truax – Family membership – Sailing a 19’ Flying Scot

Carly Brehob – Legacy member (Charlie Brehob)

Brian Myers – Sailing a Gull 22 – Legacy member (Steve Myers)

All Membership Kits have been mailed to paid members. If you did not receive yours, please send a message to: ecsc_membership@yahoo.com.

The Membership Directory will be distributed in late April or early May.

Membership Count as of 3/27/09: 220

Last year at the same time, our membership count was 226 and in 2007 it was 227. So we are off some, but not as much as we thought we might be. We have 30 members who did not renew for 2009...12 of whom did have wet slips last year.

Remember that Rich Fox will be offering several orientation sessions for new members during 2009. The first will be on Saturday, April 11th, 10am – 11am at the Upper Shelter House at ECSC. This is open to any member who would like to become more familiar with the Club. We would especially encourage those listed above and those who became new members in 2008 to attend. We also plan to have a special “New Member” table at all social functions so look for that when you come to our Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday, May 10th at 11:30. A nice chance for new members to get to know one another and for “older” members to meet and greet the “new” ones.

If you change your mailing address or email in 2009, be sure to let me know.

If you need additional keys, please contact me. And remember that front gate keys are the same as last year. You will use a new key for the Sail School Loft (Laser) and we will let you know when that core is changed.
