COMMODORE

Summer is here, it’s hot, the wind is sometimes here, sometimes not, but at least we have plenty of water!

No drought under my watch !

My committee heads report that everything is going fine.  Wayne, the week of July 8th, held a week-long sailing camp for 8–10 sailing campers. At last report, the kids were going strong.  But, for Wayne?  …. Thanks Wayne – great job!

Look at the corral with the new rope.  Aren’t we just looking real spiffy?

At our Board meeting July 9th, parents Tony & Joyce Hubbard and Chuck Andrews made a presentation to the board wishing to establish an ECSC Junior Program.  This program mainly serves the 10 – 18 year old child while our Little Eagles program serves beginners and younger children.  Their long-term wish list is to enlist our youth, along with their parents, to develop a program with I-LYA (Inter-Lake Yachting Association) for racing, learning, and experiencing sailing.  This is a wonderful youth program.  I am sure other articles in this issue will address this new program.  If you want more information, you may contact either the Hubbards or Chuck Andrews.

One FINAL plug for the Commodore’s Dinner and Dance Saturday evening August 17th.  This is not a pitch-in.  Just bring yourselves and your best Hawaiian shirt.  I am planning a buffet followed by dancing provided by the DJ.  I need you to make your reservations with a $10 per person deposit prior to August 5th so that we can plan the buffet. Support your Club - ATTEND!  Check the flyer inside for more details.

One final note.  Our lake has unfortunately experienced three drownings this summer.  Remember, swimming is not allowed in any part of Eagle Creek Reservoior (besides the beach area) or alongside your boat.  This also means at the Club’s beach or at your dock.  You can be fined and the Club can be fined as well.  Also, NO alcohol is allowed on the water.  Conservation officers have the right to board your boat and inspect coolers and life jackets.

OKAY - enough Public Service Announcements – it’s my job.

Be safe and have fun. ---

Until next month- see you on the water.

Larry January, Commodore

HARBORMASTER

Hello fellow Club members.  A lot of activity has taken place in the past month, from social, to sailing, and generally enjoying the Club.  Rick and I have not been hugely busy with projects this past month ...but with trying to get boats into their proper parking spaces, labeling the 48-hour docks, etc.  A few members indicated to me that they did not realize the north side of the 48-hour dock was available – we probably have space for 12-14 boats at any given time with the north side and the 4 fingers on the south.

We have had some more donations of lawn furniture and umbrellas by Paul Schenkel – thank you!  I had purchased one umbrella and stand for the D-Dock picnic table (unofficially known as Christy’s Corner) and it was an overwhelming hit.  People have been having their meals now in a nice area of shade.  Dick Taylor bought a second one and then Paul was kind enough to supply us with more for the other picnic tables.  If everyone would put the umbrellas down when you are finished, they may last for a while and through a few storms.  It is so very nice to have some shade on these 90-degree days!!!

We will have some new signs posted soon, NO Swimming – as per the Park Department ...and NO Parking.   Please do not block boats or empty trailers with your car.  The empty trailer means OUT SAILING and will not be able to haul their boat out when they come in if your car is blocking the trailer.  Or worse, if you park in front of the trailer and boat, NOT ABLE TO GO SAILING!!!  That is a good reason for Keel Hauling if you ask me.  If you don’t know what Keel Hauling is, I am sure Tailor will have it in his Tips soon!  Also, No Parking on the gravel access road by the top of the shelter house. The caterer almost did not make it through with their truck the last event.  Rick and I are definitely working hard to free up more space.

I have had some last minute sublets of slips, but it has definitely slowed down.  If anyone is going on vacation and taking your boat out, call me.  We have some very grateful trailer sailors that have been able to get wet for a week or two at a time.

We are printing the current Slip Wait list next month (no room this month).  All members without slips are supposed to be on it.  I think we are close to having everyone.  PLEASE check it for your name.  If you do not see your name and want to be on the list, call me and I will get you in the proper spot on the list.  This is VERY important before we start assigning available slips next March.

Sue’s going away party was fun and we will miss you – best wishes in Florida with the rest of the ECSC transplants.

LADIES FOR SAIL

Thar's riches on the high seas, I'm told, and the lovely and talented skipperinas aim to find it !!  We'll set sail at 11:00am August 10th, for our ever-popular Treasure Hunt.

We'll need to bring vessels, crew, and our own rations of food and drink.  Treasure "maps" will be provided.  T-shirts can be had for a mere pittance.  As always, the notorious pirate ships will be lurking…

Other Racing News

It has come to our attention that some racers in the Red Fleet, that foul other boats, are not doing their turns.  On the other side of the coin, racers that are being fouled are not flying the red flag.  Please, if you foul a boat, do your turns.  And, if you’re fouled, fly the red flag.

Sportsmanship and the Rules

Competitors in the sport of sailing are governed by a body of rules that they are expected to follow and enforce.  A fundamental principle of sportsmanship is that when competitors break a rule, they will promptly take a penalty or retire. (RRS)

Upcoming Events

August 9th is the next single-handed race date.

August 31st is the 5 for 5 regatta.  See Capt. Leeman for more information on the starting time.

September 7th and 8th is the Governor’s Cup.

Race Committee News

We have received two e-mails from boaters on the public side.  Both are about our Club having the starting/finishing line too close to the public docks and Rick’s Cafe.  Please do not set the line around this area !

SOCIAL

Greetings everyone.  It is hard to believe that July is about over.  This means that we only have a few more social events before the season is finished.  Thanks to Greg & Carole Branham and all of their helpers for a great July 4th Pig Roast.  As always, there was plenty of pork and corn on the cob left over for those lucky folks that stayed later to take home.

Be sure to get your reservations in for the Commodore’s Dinner on August 17th.  Larry is planning a big Hawaiian theme party that should be lots of fun.  A new dance craze called the Erkel has emerged over the past social events.  Bruce Cameron is the expert “Erkeler,” however many others know the steps and I know they would all be glad to give anyone interested a quick lesson.  And believe me, one quick lesson is all anyone will need to “get in the groove.”

Our next social will be the Labor Day cookout on Monday, September 2nd.  Our hosts again this year are Richard & Angie White.  Thanks in advance to the Whites and all of their crew for making this event so great.  Also, mark your calendars for the Hornback Chili Cook-off for later in October.

See you all around the Club….

Edna Sprowl, Social Queen

TAILER’S TIPS & TALES

Welcome to the world where make-believe meets reality; it's Tailer's Tips & Tales.  If you are interested in spitting out a few stories or facts on current events, or writing for this column ... please contact Evan and remind him that I should be due for a raise.  As you read these lines and I look back at you through the very paper that you hold in your hands, I realize you skipped a few articles before you settled first on this little mess, thanks!  How, you ask, can I see this?  Well, if I can talk to dogs, I can do pretty  much anything I want to, don't you think?  Some of you guys need to put your shirts on.  We are going to be moving along at a pretty good clip on this one, so try to keep up. For a free transcript of this month’s article, please feel free to write down everything that I say.

Trouble, this Staff Writer's Special Investigative Reporter, has been hot on the heels (literally) of a tip that’s only a month old.  Dogs just don't have a sense of urgency on some things.  Well, it looks like that sucker Colin is going to bite the bullet for the first time.  It seems he is going to marry the gorgeous Jenni Graf.  He may be a sucker for love, but he sure can pick 'em!  The best to you guys from everyone here at Telltales and the Club.

Amidst all the recent mishaps on the lake, we should all be aware of our Club's excellent safety record.  We have saved a few fellow boaters over the years and our lake is safer because of our Club’s very presence.  This Sailing Club attracts sailors with years of experience with water craft. We have a history of safety and sailing training that is unrivaled on our lake.  We should be proud of our record and stand by it by promoting safety in the future.

On  the lighter side of this paradise, The Big "C" is having his dinner dance this month, so check the date. Wayne has Le Roy Leeman in charge of the 5 for 5 Regatta.  Baseball night is coming back!  What about a female Commodore?  I say let’s go for it!  Voice your opinion as to whom you think should be the next Vice Commodore to the current Vice Commodore.  As always, we leave many things unsaid as we head into the tips section.  Trouble wanted to do the tips this time and I'm not going to waste my valuable time reading them, but you can if you want to.

Get yer tips right here:

SAFETY & EDUCATION

Sail Indiana

It is hard to believe we have completed all the Sail Indiana classes.  Our participants have demonstrated the ability to sail through all points of wind, capsize & upright their Lasers, and respond efficiently to man-overboard situations.

A willingness to learn and the spirit to experiment, especially in the light-air Saturdays, have contributed to the Sail Indiana fun this season.

Looking forward to seeing Sail Indiana 2002 sailors on the water!

CPR

A dozen members attended the introductory CPR class last month.  Katie Gunn made an outstanding presentation and recommended a real CPR certification class.  So, here's your chance if you missed it to become official.  A few hours in September could make the difference between life and death.  Contact me at 852-9227 or email bobbyc12345 @aol.com for further details.

ECSC YOUTH SAILING PROGRAM

I’m very happy to report to the Club and its members that the first Youth Sailing Program was a great success.  The kids ranged in ages from 10 to 16 years old.  With the help of Paul Schenkel, Tony Hubbard, and Bob Hickok, these kids started a long week of learning to sail.  At the end of the program, 99% had solo in the big waters of Eagle Ocean.  Again, I wish to thank all of the members for their support for this program.

FOR “SAIL”

Need to sell Highlander 'cause my family says "no more centerboard trunks for us".  Painted (Interlux Largo Blue) Fiberglass D&M hull #815, mostly foam re-cored, with aluminum mast, boom, and removable motor mount.  New halyards (quick-ups) installed 2000.  Two full sets of older sails in good condition, new spinnaker pole.  Original tilt trailer/bunks with new trailer jack.  Asking just $2,950.  Contact: Steve Myers (stevelm@comcast.net)

Two (2) sails for sale.  A 110% and a 150%.  They're from my 23 foot O'Day.  The 110 is a Neil Pride and the 150 is unknown.  I would like $100 for both of them and I’ll throw in the sail bags as well.  Rick Phillips 293-8688 or iurap53@juno.com.
