Club Website and TellTales
Our web guru Bill Harrington and Telltales Taskmaster Evan Williams recently received high praise from the head of the Royal British Virgin Islands Yacht Club, Judy Petz. She is very impressed with the site being “very easy to navigate” and with the newsletters that she finds “very interesting and humorous.”

A “tip of the hat” to Evan and Bill for a job well done.

Also, a visitor to our site from Lake Monroe Sailing Association passed along to me this thought, “I remain kind of staggered by the quality and consistency of the racing program at the ECSC.”

I should mention if you normally read only the printed version of the TellTales you are missing out on some great photos. If you only read the online version and could do without the printed, please let Evan know.

Several people told me they don’t think they have ever seen so many people attend the 4th of July Pig Roast. The line for food was the longest I think I’ve ever seen it. A big thank you goes to Ed and Fran Rice and their crew of helpers (David & Ann Marie Knapp, Roger & Michelle Knapp, Sean Timpe, Ray & Judy Knapp, Debbie Knapp, Tony Rice, and Roger Alyea) for putting this event all together. Let’s also not forget to mention Jim Ault “the Pig Man” for staying up all night turning the pig on the spit so it was cooked to perfection!

Here is the social line up for August and September.

Saturday, August 13th Rick and Edna Sprowl will be hosting the Commodore’s Dinner/Dance. Be sure to mark your calendars for this event. I’ve got the inside scoop and Edna has planned a wonderful evening.

Monday, September 5th Rich and Angie White will be hosting the Labor Day cookout. The Club will be providing hamburgers and hot dogs and we ask you bring a covered dish to share.

Saturday, September 25th Bruce and I will be gathering up wood at the lower shelter house for a Bonfire. If the weather cooperates, we might even camp overnight. The Club will be providing hot dogs, hamburgers, and smores. Please bring a dish to share and if the weather permits, a tent and sleeping bag.

Looking far ahead, be sure to mark your calendars now for the November 12th Final Bash. We will be partying downtown this year at the Rathskeller in the Ballroom with Uncle JuJu (the band – not some guy in a black cowboy hat). Don’t forget this is one of those events where you have to prepay but aren’t required to bring anything.

    Club Improvements
The rip-rap has been replenished along the grass seawall in front of the Liar’s Table area...and, I didn’t see hardly anyone helping Bob Bodish move those big stones. Good job, Bob!

One of our water pumps failed and was replaced.

We did some repair to a water line feeding the upper shelter.

One of the lawn tractors needed repair...might need to be replaced next year.

The metal protrusions on the west side of the launching ramp have been covered.

The pressure sprayer got a little sprucing up.

    Upcoming Items
Potential new playground equipment and swings.

More rock for the dry parking.

Paved walkway from the beach to the grass area.

The Harbormaster Barn might be delayed until next year.

Bob Bodish tells me he's looking for a good source to replace those neat plastic trash barrels we use at the Club. Apparently, the last ones only lasted ten years. Anybody got any ideas?

Look for the Club Closing Party in the first part of November.

    Shared Thoughts
All seems quiet now on the Harbormaster front so I'd like to share some thoughts on the 3rd trip that I took with Ki and Tyler to Junior Bay Week.

Inter-Lake Yachting Association Junior Bay Week usually takes place the 3rd week in July...at the Put-In-Bay Yacht Club on South Bass Island, Lake Erie. Eagle Creek is a member of the I-LYA and that enables us to participate in their events. This is the biggest of the year for the juniors and usually draws about 200 13-18 year-olds from 10-15 different clubs (pic left).

Similar to our Club, volunteers, parents, and coaches play a huge role in making this event one of the biggest and best I've been to. From check-in to departure while the sailors ready themselves for boat inspections and racing, we're behind the scenes gearing up for meals, race committees, parent of day responsibilities and fire watch duties. How everything comes together amazes me to no end. It's caring for these junior sailors, the event, friends, and the Island, that make me want to keep going back and participating...especially encouraging other junior sailors and parents to go. You won't be disappointed but amazed.

Ask Tony or Joyce Hubbard, Chuck or Barb Andrews, newcomer David Borkowski (ISC), Coach Jason Hubbard, Ki Hickok (pic left), Tyler Andrews, Cameron Borkowski (ISC), Connor Kohl (ISC) or me why we keep going back.

Next year I'm planning on Senior Bay Week as well as Junior Bay!

    Cowan Lake Regatta
    Evan Williams

My son’s first away regatta...meet at 1pm Friday to pack to head out for Cowan Lake Sailing Association (just northeast of Cincinnati). It was easy...when we got to the Club at 1pm, Wayne already had all three Lasers mounted on the trailer and ready to drive away. I can handle this type of effort!

So, I took off with my son EJ, along with RJ Graef (pics right) — another ECSC Club junior sailor. Wayne pulled the trailer with his van, the “condo.” We got to Cowan Lake club about 2.5 hours later...Wayne pulled in two hours after that! Their lake is about the same size as ours. They have a decent shelter/clubhouse with a great kitchen...along with another shelter nearby perfect for camping (with hookups and johns). The kids and I pitched our two tents, Wayne got his condo.

Saturday started the regatta. There ended up being about 23 “Lasers” for the weekend...divided up into three divisions: Radials for the juniors (6 boats), Force 5 (4 boats), and open (13 boats). The wind wasn’t that great Saturday and only got two races in before the lightening struck. Sunday had better wind and got three races in.

It was the first race Saturday that made the whole trip worth it for me, the parent tagging along. My son, EJ, won his first race of his first away regatta! I think he’s hooked! RJ came in second that race for a sweep by ECSC. Unfortunately, we didn’t keep up the effort and ended the regatta with RJ taking 2nd place overall followed by EJ in 3rd...of the 6 boats in the radial division.

Overall, the level of fun and competition for the kids was great. I suspect both kids will continue representing our Club for years to come...as long as Wayne continues his outstanding junior program at ECSC!

Oh….uh….Wayne? Did you race at Cowan Lake? I was so busy watching the kids, I don’t know how you did!

    Safety & Education
    Wayne Myers
    Rick Graef

News & Notes Wayne Myers and Evan Williams with two of our junior sailors RJ & EJ traveled the 170 miles to Cowan Lake, Ohio for this laser race. RJ (Graef) finished 2nd and EJ (Williams) was 3rd out of 6 boats. Light air and rain made for a challenging weekend of sailing.

Tyler Andrews wins Junior Bay Week!!! (pic right)  Ki Hickok finished 13th. After one hard week of heavy and light and shifty winds, young Tyler comes out on top...with his 2nd US Sailing major championship in the bag.

Our hats are off to you guys….

Rick Graef and I wish to thank the following Club members for their help this past month: Evan Williams, Tony Hubbard, Bob & Janet Hickok, & Jason Hubbard.

    IUPUI Kids

We are looking into buying jib sails...getting quotes from many different companies to find the best price. We have been lasering on Tuesday nights and coming out on Wednesday nights to crewing in the Club races. There’s a team meeting coming up soon to talk about upcoming events work on our budget.

There are three regattas coming up this fall for us...with our four new members, we are emphasizing training, so they will be ready for these regattas.

    Jon Storer, Commodore

Hello Members! All has been well for IUPUI Sailing. A few of us are studying our summer away on the track to educational success, but many of our members are out enjoying these precious few months of warmth. Turnout for our Tuesday and Wednesday practices has been underwhelming, but we are working to get our ducks in a row, so to speak, as the intercollegiate regatta season draws near.

While we hope to improve our standing and esteem as a competitor this season, we will also be careful not to distance ourselves from what attracted us to sailing to begin with; FUN! With that said, we would like to thank the ECSC members for their invaluable help in making our competitions and leisure sailing possible. Also, the team is shopping for new FJ jibs and sails. If anyone could be of help in the matter let us know. Thanks! See you on the water!

    Tag Article
    Roger & Julie Black

Standing around at the liars’ table before a race and Jim Wolfinger waved his hand at me and said, “Tag, you’re it!”

Now, I am supposed to write a tag article.

Well, I was born a poor "Black" child in the hills of Kentucky….

STOP! STOP! Carol Dolder said not that far back...tell about how I/we started sailing.

Well, a long time ago in the hills of Tennessee, just outside of Nashville, Julie and I lived close to Percy Priest Lake. We both enjoyed the water. The only access to the lake was by boat. Being young and not having much money, we could not afford a power boat, so we bought a 16’ Luger day sailor. We brought the boat home, polished it, and set out for the lake.

The wind was blowing about 10 to 15 and the sun was out...a great day to go sailing. After two hours of rigging the boat ,it was time to launch. An hour passed after fifteen tries and waving several boaters past us, we finally made it into the water. I believe that day we were the entertainment for the local Yacht Club. One stranger felt sorry for us and told us we looked like novices and maybe we should go out with just the jib (the sail in the front) since the wind was blowing pretty good.

So...we hoisted up the jib and away we went...Julie and I out on the lake.

Finally, something went right...the boat was moving out of cove and into the main body of water. Hey, this is not bad, it was worth the three hours of putting the boat into the water.

After 30 minutes, Julie said we need to go back...had things at home that needed to take care of. With a sag in my voice, I said OK. We turned the boat around and started sailing back toward the cove.

The wind was blowing straight out from the cove and the boat went past the cove down the lake. So, I turned the boat around and we started sailing back toward the cove again. Now the cove was on the other side of the boat and we passed it again.

I told Julie we were going to try again….try to make the boat turn and sail it as close to the wind as we could into the cove. But, the boat turned and sailed out into the main body of water.

    Hmmmmm!

So, thinking out loud what to do, it hit me...sail the boat close to the cove and pull down the sail and paddle the boat into shore. Julie said that would work, but you left the paddle in the car with the drinks and food.

As we sailed past the cove once again, Julie started crying and saying we are going to die on this lake. Thinking out loud again... what are we going to do...what are we going to do...we decided to sail the boat close to the cove and drop the sail and paddle with our hands.

So, we sailed toward the cove and dropped the sail and started paddling with our hands.

It was then that another boat came along and towed us to the ramp.

It took Julie several months before she would go back out sailing with me again! I knew, though, that that day, for some strange reason, the bug bit me and that I wanted to learn how sail.

So, through trial and error, I am learning how to sail.

    Ship's Store
    Joyce & Malcolm Mallette

Only three more formal chances to buy ECSC merchandise. We'll be open for the Labor Day picnic, the Governor's Cup Regatta dinner on September 10th, and the Chili Cook-off on October 8th.

There will be some end-of-the-year closeouts, so be sure to stop by looking for bargains.

We are always open for suggestions of new and different items for next year...we are a customer driven store! As such, you’re more than welcome to contact us via E-Mail for “emergency” orders that could be handled when we are both at the Club (mallettej@comcast.net).

    Publicity
    Evan Williams

    Just a couple notes.

First, regarding ad policies for the Telltales...so far, there is no charge. About the only criteria is that whatever is being communicated is of potential interest and benefit to the members of this Club.

Second, for the Web version of the Telltale, I send out an E-Mail message announcing its readiness as a reminder for you to view it. My distribution list is about 80% of the Club members. If there are more E-Mail addresses you would like added to this E-Mail notice, it’s no problem to add more (spouses, kids, work IDs, mothers, brothers, etc.). Just lemme know.

Also, if you haven’t been getting these announcement messages, it’s probably because you’re in that 20%. Want a reminder? Send me your E-Mail address (Evanwi@Yahoo.com).

    Chicago Mac Race

This is an annual weekend event inwhich a few of our Club member participate...started at the Chicago Yacht Club at noon on Saturday, July 16th with 18 start times stretching over 2.5 hours. It ended at the Mackinac Island usually taking two or three days to get over the 333 miles.

The fastest time looked to be around 37 hours.

For more info on the Mac Race, click Here.

A tale of this race, as recalled by one of our ex-IUPUI racers, Chris Murray (pic above), can be found Here. It's very interesting reading!

    Rick Graef's Words
I raced aboard Excalibur, a Beneteau 40.7. We finished 5th out of 11 in our section and 33rd out 126 overall. The top 6 finishers in our section all finished within sight of each other after 46 hours of sailing. That's one design big boat racing.

15 1/2 minutes separated 1st from 6th. Other than about four hours during the first night when the wind shut down, conditions were moderate...that is until the last 18 hours, when winds increased from 10 to 15 knots and up to 30 knots at the finish. The trimaran "Emma" got caught in a microburst with 60+ knots of wind in greys reef and capsized.

We on Excalibur had the boat up to 15.4 Knots of boat speed surfing down the large waves that formed at the top of the lake. Speeds of 10 - 12 knots were the norm the last 8 hours of the race. I'll never forget the thrill of carrying our .75 chute in 25 knots of wind through Greys Reef.
