There’s nothing more thrilling than to be boating on two different bodies of water the same day...which is exactly what I got to do this July when I went up to the Island of Put-In-Bay on Lake Erie to visit and see how our junior sailors were doing at the I-LYA Junior Bay Week...then came back to Eagle Creek to race with my honey on a Wednesday evening.

Great job to all our Indianapolis young sailors there...and to the parents, coaches, and chaperones who make that event safe, fun, and enjoyable for all! Look for results in the Safety and Education article.

Also, Evan Williams is in charge of Launch and Recovery the next two years at Junior Bay Week and is looking for volunteer men and women to help with that part of the program. Count me in for a couple days, E!

Are you happy with the way the Club is running? September is the time that we nominate candidates for the Board and we are always looking for people who are willing to contribute a few Tuesday nights during the year. Maybe you would like to host a social event or be an officer. If you are interested, let us hear from you. If you think the Club should be run differently, or you think it is doing fine and would like to participate, now is your chance.

There have been some beautiful days this year and I hope there will be many more to come. So come out; have a sail and a picnic, paddle a kayak, or hitch a ride to the Park side for "Jazz On The Point." Remember to offer a tow in or out of the cove to the members of non-motorized sailboats. When the wind is light, I bet they’d accept. I know it’s a long row back.

We’re taking reservations for the Commodore’s Casino Party on August 11th. Try to get them in early.

The heat is on and summer is flying by as usual. I don’t know about you, but there is NEVER enough time to enjoy everything the summer season has to offer………

The social season is beyond half over and we have a great event right around the corner. Commodore Bob and Lady Janet are sponsoring a new and old member casino night on Saturday, August 11th. Please plan to attend as there will be raffles during the evening and several different game tables. This is a great opportunity for new and old members to meet and get to know one another a little better.

Right: Lady Janet at the raftup for her 50th birthday

I would like to thank Fran and Ed Rice for chairing the July 4th Pig Roast. Member volunteers who helped that day were Paul and Sally Wycoff, Chuck and Sue Tavel, David and Ann Marie Knapp, Tony Rice, and Jennifer Knapp. Thanks to all, Good Job!

The next event after this will be the Labor Day cookout. Watch the next newsletter for details.

If anyone has any new ideas for social events at the Club and/or willing to help bring them about….let me know about it and drop me an email at: .

Enjoy our great Club and get out on the water of Eagle Creek!!!!

All is quiet with the HarborMaster Committee. Scary isn't it?

The water is going down, so make sure your boat isn't soon to be resting on the bottom.

An updated slip-waiting list will be published next month. If you see any errors , please E-Mail or call me.

Also, a work-credit list will be published soon. Make sure you contact me concerning errors in work hours with the HarborMaster Committee you may notice.

Sail, it's good for your mental health.

Believe it or not, the 2007 sailing season is half over with the fall series starting August 1st. So, if you are planning on racing your boat this year, now is the perfect time to get out there.

Governor’s Cup Regatta together with Make-A-Wish Foundation
This year the Governor’s Cup Regatta has joined forces to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

If you are unfamiliar with Make-A-Wish, they are a charitable organization that helps children with life-threatening medical conditions...to grant a child’s wish. This Regatta will help benefit a 5 year-old boy named Tyler who suffers from Pilocytic Astrocytoma (a form of brain tumor). Tyler’s wish is to go to Disney World.

Right: Ki & Bob Hickok doing the tunes at the ECSC Regatta Beach Party

Several local businesses are sponsoring the regatta and we are hopefully going to raise enough funds to grant Tyler’s wish...but we need your help.

We are asking everyone to come out and race your sailboat in the Governor’s Cup Regatta!

All of the regatta fees will go toward making Tyler’s wish possible and you will also enjoy two days of great sailing. If racing doesn’t interest you, I know the regatta dinner will!

The dinner tickets (also to benefit Tyler’s wish) are $13 each and this includes unlimited refreshments and a live band. During the dinner, we will also raffle off sailing related items that have been donated by Sailboats Inc and other businesses or people in the area.

So, mark your calendar for September 8th and 9th and come out and support the cause.

    Sail for fun....

    Sail with a purpose....

We will be at the Michigan City In-Water Boat Show Thursday, August 23rd thru Sunday, August 26th. Visit www.michigancityboatshow.com for times and admission. At the show you can find us at the Hunter Booth. We will have all of our Hunter Boats in the water and will be taking people for Demo rides. It would be a great time to try out the 2008 Hunter 25 or test-sail the sleek (and fast) Hunter 216.

The 2008 Models will be here soon and we have a few 2007 boats left. If you're thinking about a new boat, it's a great time to buy before the price goes up on the new model. We're offering FREE BOTTOM PAINT on any 2007 model that we have in stock as an added incentive. We also have a couple Tohatsu 5hp 2007 four-stroke motors you can get for $100 off while they last.

Sailboats, Inc. just committed as a major sponsor for the Governor's Cup Regatta. We hope you will support us in return. Next time you go on-line to buy a boat part, sails, or accessories, think of calling us FIRST. Many times our prices are just as good and you don't have to pay freight.

Support your local SAILBOAT DEALER so we are here to support you when you need it most.

    SPRING SERIES SCORING REPORT

The Spring Series has come to a completion. It sure did come and go in a hurry this year! Check out the full results at http://race.ecsail.org. Here's a synopsis on the action:

    WEDNESDAY- 1850 Signal
Wednesday night racing brought what is thought to be the first Series in ECSC history in which two women finished in the Top 3 of our largest fleet.

Right: Our 2006 Sailor of the Year: Lady Janet

Red Fleet - PHRF (202 and below)
Congratulations to Eileen Leonard sailing her J24, "Fun Police" (USA3329) who finished in Third place with 14 points right behind Janet Hickok in Second with 12 points on J24 "Spontaneous Combustion" (USA2783). Let's not forget our good friend R. Tom Moore sailing his Merit 25 who took FIRST in the Series!

Eleven boats qualified for this year's Spring Series in the Red Fleet down from Sixteen that qualified last year. Let's try and coax those folks back to the race course...the water is great.

    Green Fleet - Portsmouth
Three Highlanders battled their way to the top seats of the Green Fleet this Series. In Third with 12 points we have Bob McCoun and his crew sailing "Cowabunga" (1003). Just ahead in the Second spot is Tim Hollingsworth (934) with 9 points. Finally, our FIRST Place prize with 6 points is Charlie Brehob (on left at the Mayor's Cup Regatta) sailing "On Strike" (1008). Qualifying boats in this fleet is down just one boat from 2006. Let's get some more Lasers out to the line! Bring the kids out to sail one of the Club's many Lasers. There are plenty of boats to offer a tow.

White Fleet (PHRF 203 and above)
Only one point separated the Top 3 spots in this fleet. In the Third seat we have Rich Fox sailing his Catalina 22 (14411) with 7 points. With 6 points taking Second is Tony Wright, who is almost always single-helming, sailing an S26.7. And, in FIRST with 5 points is Greg McGarvey on his Lindenberg 22.

The number of boats who qualified in the White Fleet is down 2 boats from the 2006 Spring Series. This is a great fleet for single-helming boats who have a rating of 203 and above. It also boasts a bunch of friendly competitors.

    SUNDAY- 1330 Signal
The Sunday afternoon Series this year features two races which are both scored together in the same Series. This differs from years past in which we've scored the two races on Sunday in different Series. This new style increases competition and still offers folks the ability to sail in just one race if they wish.

Red Fleet - PHRF (202 and below)
The one and only fleet that had enough competitors to score this year brought us some really close racing! In the third slot with 25 points is Janet Hickok on her J24 (you heard about her earlier in the Wednesday results). A tie surmounted in the final races of the Series between Commodore Bob Hickok (USA2783) and Mike Grey (USA2244) on their J24s. Both skippers ended up with 9 points. The tie was broken with rule A8.2 in the RRS which decides the winner based on the final race of the series. Commodore Bob Hickok was victorious by a whole 1' 5" and claims the FIRST place in Sunday Series.

Call your slip neighbors and drag them out to the race course! We promise not to bark or bite too hard!

    Bailer's Tips & More
    The Bailer

Sam Bellamy and I were on the back deck of the Queen Anne’s Revenge. He sat invisible to everyone but me. We were playing a cut-throat game of Crazy Eights with a few of our neighbors at the Club. Living on the docks, I guess we are all neighbors...so, I guess I will narrow it down. They are the ones that will tolerate me talking to a man who cannot be seen (they think it's just “the demon rum” flap-jacking my brain).

Poor Black Sam was not much familiar with the game. “Basically it’s the second cousin to Chess.” I told him.

Sam cursed us all after losing a hand. He jumped overboard in a fit...assuming his visible soul vessel; the mighty catfish.

    Above: Bill Freihofer's 'Garden'

A former Commodore and long time fisherman sported (names are best left out of my accounts of the cold hard facts, because I have been told in a cold hard fashion that they did not hold water), “Dang, that was the biggest catfish I have ever did seen. It had to weigh fifteen stone!" "Twenty-two!" I casually corrected him and then realized my social faux pas. I ended my statement with "or even bigger."

Our former Commodore, a well-respected member of the Club, dropped his cards on the deck and ran to his boat in order to get his fishing rigs set up. he yelled over his shoulder as he ran, “We're going to need a bigger boat.”

I calmed the others with my special grog recipe and they all departed smiling and singing sea shanties terribly off-key. I watched the well-kept boat motoring towards the damn...the fisherman/reformed Commodore had his fighting chair (bean bag) tied in the cockpit while he sailed towards the damn singing something about Fair Spanish Ladies….

I said to my only guest and servant (who was sitting next to me soaking wet and smelling of catfish), "So Sam, where is Tailer?"

I had been waiting for the right moment and I judged him to be off-guard enough to let it slip. Well he didn’t have to. I looked up when I heard a familiar voice saying, “I’m right here, Dufus!”

    "Tailer?"

    "Yes?"

    "Where you been?"

Above: Bernie doing the Didgeridoo at the Beach Party

"Here and there. I heard you were spreading rumors about me being off’d by the Mob or on the run for so much nonsense. Oh, Hi Sam! Good to see ya!"

Sam replied, "Eey a sight for sore eyes. Your cousin here has about driven me mind off the end of the earth!"

Tailer replied, "Bailer? my relative? Second cousin twelve generations removed is a bit of a stretch for claiming someone your blood unless he won the lottery. You win the lottery Bailer? "

    "No…"

"So as I was saying, he is as related to me as I am to everyone else on this big blue marble! However, Bailer, if you stop pouting I will admit you are like a long lost brother...one who I thought I had dropped off far enough from home that you would not be able to... err....never mind! Ah, stop your pouting! We're all brothers here you, me, and Sam. Do me a favor, bra? Give us some tips on your own this time?"

"eh?" I stuttered, wondered and thought. "OK. you wanna play that way than let's play that way. I’ve got some tips all on my own. knowing I could solo the globe like Joshua Slocum, I reckon I can write my own tips. Watch and weep."

#1. Trust no one unless you like what they are saying.
#2. Never give your credit card number to someone who calls...unless they insist! Give them your mother’s maiden name for starters.
#3. Eat more catfish...gigantic ones around 22 stone if available.
#4. Wear a hat so you don’t get sunburned. This tip holds some water.
    #5. Always talk...never listen.
#6. Laugh while your laugher is still working. This one holds water as well.

Above: Commodore Bob heading out for Lady Janet's raftup

It took deep concentration to come up with these tips. I chewed four #2 pencils to the nub and half a red-ink pen. I am not sure chewing a pencil aids in the thought process, but I do know chewing red-ink pens can really make you feel alive. So, for a change of pace, I am looking for a tip for me.

Does anyone know how to remove red ink from skin..say ones lips, cheek, and chin? Also, how would one, if it were necessary, remove red ink from clothing and fiberglass and teak?

#7. Stop by my boat and chat. Free grog plus I volunteer Sam to clean your hull for free. He doesn’t mind at all….

    Kind Regards and tack well.....

    JUNIOR BAY WEEK
    98 Boats on the lines....

This is our 5th year at Junior Bay Week and we just get better each year. 13 junior sailors (pictured right) this year represented ECSC and ISC. We didn’t win any 1st places, but what a show...Up to 10 races over 4 days in light air and a heavy chop sea was running.

    Results were:

    Laser Radial Class (16 boats)
    2nd: RJ Graef (3,1,(8),1,3,(4),2,1,1,4)
    4th: EJ Williams (7,8,2,(9),8,2,4,4,(11),3)
    9th: Erika Williams (5,9,(13),7,10,(10),11,2,6,9)
    14th: Alice Tchang (12,13,14,14,14,11,9,(15),13,(15))
    15th: Ed Duckworth (10,11,15,11,(15),15,13,14,(16),14)

    420 Class (40 Boats)
34th: Conner Kohl & Jacob Hubbard

    Thistle Class (13 Boats)
10th: Brian McDonald, Michael Kelleher, Andrew Lenzo
12th: George Jerman, Austin Greaf, Cody McCoun

JOB WELL DONE TO OUR ECSC & ISC JUNIOR SAILING TEAM

I also wish to say “Thank You” again to our support staff from ECSC: Tony & Joyce Hubbard, Bob & Anne McCoun, Rick & Sandy Graef, Evan & Katie Williams, Jason Hubbard, and Ki Hickok for all of their hard work in putting this together. Without your help, the kids would not know this part of sailing and team work. And to all of our club members who helped with their donations to send these kids to this major U.S. event, another big Thank You!

Left: Coaches heading out on Tony & Joyce's Alden at Bay Week.

    Noteworthy
Points-wise, RJ Graef was tied for first in the Laser Radial Class. The tiebreaker went out to the 6th race to determine the breaker. Both kids had four 1st places, but RJ only had one 2nd place while the winner had two 2nd places. Our whole team felt the frustration for RJ on the last day when racing was called off at 9:30am due to weather (heavy rain & fog).

EJ, being a nice guy, let a port-tacker cross in front of him...only to have her roll tack and beat him out of a spot at the finish line.

    Right: EJ at Bay Week

Erika had two good races in the top five positions (2nd and 5th). Her tacking/hiking and keeping her head out of boat has helped.

Cody, Austin, and George did a good job working as a team, considering they had only been in the boat for a month.

    OTHER RACING NEWS

    Junior Olympic Festival
In Detroit Michigan June 29th - July 1st, RJ Graef finished 13th and EJ Williams 19th (out of 28 Radials) at the Bay View Sailing Club. RJ's best race was a 5th and EJ's best an 8th. This was hard racing with the top juniors from around the county...in light wind & sea. Also, RJ forgot to drink lots of water and had to sit out two races because of dehydration. Let’s hope he has learned this lesson!

    Vermilion Regatta
This regatta is typically a qualifier immediately before Bay Week. Out of 14 Laser Radials, ECSC took:

    1st RJ Graef
    3rd Erika Williams
    8th EJ Williams
    9th Austin Graef
    10th Alice Tchung

    Left: Our kids at Vermilion.

Have Opening For Two More Junior Sailors
Want your kid to learn sailing and teamwork? Must work hard, have good grades in school, be able to travel, and have fun. Age 12 to 17 (13 by next year’s Junior Bay Week).

Contact Wayne Myers or Ki Hickok at the Club or alarmco@netdirect.net

    Something to Think About
It takes a long time for some people to accept something new. One simply has to recognize that progress is about change and development...then by definition, attitudes will always follow one step behind.

    Youth & Laser Sailing
    Evan Williams

The youth sailing season is past the mid-point for the I-LYA Traveler Series (6 races completed out of 8 scheduled). We've also completed the weeklong Bay Week at Put-In-Bay. Those juniors committed to the team this year are off & racing.

Now might be the time to start thinking about next year. For those juniors considering our youth sailing program, there are two regattas left this year that should be fun...and should give you an idea of what youth sailing is all about:

Right: Evan helping launch at Bay Week.

    Wayne's World 5 for 5
    Saturday, September 1st
This is a one-day regatta at our Club open to all Laser sailors...young and old. It gives an easy venue since it's at Eagle Creek and run basically for our own Club members (although anyone is welcome - ISC???). This is a once-a-year opportunity for our Club Laser owners to hit the waves with other Club Laser owners.

    Lake Lemon Regatta
    Saturday/Sunday, September 22/23
This regatta is fairly close (near Bloomington) in the rolling hills of southern Indiana. We usually camp for Friday and Saturday nights at the Bloomington Yacht Club...sailing on Saturday & Sunday. This is again a fun regatta with easy logistics. Again, no age limit.

These two regattas provide an opportunity for all Laser sailors, young & old, racers & non-racers, to gather and sail unimpeded by the big boats.

I'll be there watching as usual!

Oh, and, my wife found a site here that's huge on learning how to tie knots.

Left: Bay Week team at the awards banquet.

    Catalina 22 Class
    Rich Fox

    The Yankees are Coming!

Catalina 22 racers from the north and the south are preparing for an invasion of Lake Lanier (Atlanta), Georgia to participate in the Catalina 22 "Gone With The Wind Regatta" the weekend of September 22-23.

This is also the Catalina 22 Southeast Regional Regatta.

We can easily count on at least 25 to 30 boats on the start-line and hope for a few boats to represent Eagle Creek Sailing Club.

Above: Rick & Ki - Our two Bay Week coaches.

The GWTW Regatta will feature three fleets for different levels of sailing experience - including a new "Cruising Fleet" for those sailors who may not want to spill their drinks.

For ECSC C22 owners who want more information, please contact Rich Fox or refer to the NOR on www.catalina22.org/calendar/htm.
