    Safety and Education – April 2018

    Eagle Creek Sailing Clubs Junior Summer Sailing Camp is officially full for 2018!   There was a lot of interest in the camp by both former campers, as well as a large influx of new kids coming to the camp and the camp filled very quickly.   Camp doesn’t happen for about 3 months, so now the staff meetings and planning will be completed leading to another year of introducing about 50 kids to the sport of sailing.  The Junior Camp is a great way to build future sailors not only for ECSC, but for the good of the sport in general.  Who knows how many of these kids will “get the bug” and become future club members or junior sailors for ECSC.
    It is spring time, and HOPEFULLY the cold weather will be gone very very soon!  Just a quick reminder to do a safety check on your boat(s) to be sure things are as they should be to first avoid anything going wrong while you are sailing or at the club, and second should something happen are you prepared to act with the proper safety gear, plan, etc.?   Safety First!
    Junior updates should be coming soon, as regatta season will be upon us soon enough.  Until then, the ECSC Junior Team is finishing their winter workout program and will be heading outside to the club in the very near future.  They will be doing both weight training at the Junior Sailing Center, as well as sailing on the lake as often as possible. If you happen to see them, please show them our support by saying “Hi!”.

    Safety and Education – March 2018

    The ECSC Junior Sailing team has been working very hard this off season, and are looking forward to the new season that starts in April. They are all itching to get back on the water as soon as possible. We have several new sailors on the team and they are getting into the workout and strength building routine to be ready for spring. It is amazing how they work to be at their best. The 2018 season should be very productive for the club and the junior team! Can’t wait!

    We are getting a high volume of interest in the upcoming ECSC Junior Sailing Camp which is in the end of June! If you have kids who are interested please get them signed up fast because spots are filling quickly! This camp has always been a ton of fun for the kids involved, and they come back year after year. Also, it is a great way to get kids interested in sailing and grow the sailing community! The majority of our Junior team has participated in the camp and are now great racers! The camp is a busy two weeks for our club and we are looking forward to another great year! Here is a link to camp the camp registration page.

    Camp Registration is now open for 2018!   Camp weeks are June 18-22 and June 25-29 for more information, or to register on-line Click Here!  As usual interest in the summer sailing camp is very high, so I would definitely register as soon as possible since we only have so many spaces available.
    The 2018 ECSC Junior Sailing Team schedule is beginning to firm up, when I have a better idea of exact dates, I’ll post it here.  The juniors have been working out indoor at Hoosier Heights rock climbing and weight lifting preparing for spring.  Wayne has been posting workout videos and photos on the ECSC Junior Sailing Facebook page, give it a “like” and support our Juniors and follow their progress.
    We wrote about Reagan’s adventure to the Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta last month.  She got a lot of sailing in, improved her technique, and gained speed.  She spoke at the last race meeting to share her experiences with the many club members in attendance.  Below are some pictures from her week there, as well as our return to the snow.

    ECSC Junior Sailor Reagan Lessick is currently down in Miami for the Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta.   Being as Reagan is used to training on flat water, she has been out for two trainingsails in the Atlantic. She is getting used to the difference of sailing in the Atlantic.  While a a bit nervous at first, she has quickly gotten used to the conditions and feels she is as ready as she can be for this event.  If you are unfamiliar with the Orange Bowl, it is a large regatta held in Miami every year between Christmas and New Years. Over the past generations, ECSC has sent numerous sailors to this event to learn and to represent our club. Reagan decided to make the drive down to Miami to gain valuable experience that she hopes will pay off this summer in the I-LYA series, as well as Junior Bay Week.  Reagan will be sailing with a sticker on the stern of her boat remembering the late Mark Gummer, who’s family generously asked donations made in Marks memory to be made to the ECSC Junior Program.

    Day 4 the final day. She’s out right now about to go finish up the last races while we are loading up to begin the long drive home as soon as she is finished. Gotta say, so proud of her! She has been pushing herself to the limit each and every day, and then coming back for more again and again. She is exhausted, bruised, blistered, and sunburnt, but has been keeping a great attitude and is learning a ton! She says she is sailing better and faster than she ever has, and I see her growing in other ways as well that she doesn’t see herself….definitely worth the trip down here!     It is still 2017, and we are already getting a few inquires about 2018 Sailing Camp!   Camp dates have not been set yet, but registration should be ready in late February.  Please keep an eye on the Sailing Camp page of the club website for more information as it is available.

    After a busy summer the majority of the 2017 Junior Sailing season is complete.  The end of the I-LYA travelers series was plagued by a few cancelled regattas due to weather at the hosting clubs, so that made for  a shortened series.  ECSC’s Reagan Lessick ended up 6th in the series for 2017, up one spot from last year.  Reagan has one more year in the program and we are looking forward to some great results next season.   Grant Goff has also been doing some conditioning as well as competing in his first regattas.  He is getting a little taste of what this sailboat racing thing is all about.
    Typically this time of year, the Junior Team would be heading to Lake Lemon for a final regatta of the year This regatta has always given some new youth the chance to experience their first real regatta.  Unfortunately that event has been cancelled this year!  Not to worry, our own Wayne Myers is setting up a Junior Regatta in conjunction with the Governors Cup Regatta on Sept 16-17.  Race against the best in the mid-west. Free registration and meal! Short windward / leeward courses, lots of starts, great prizes. Open to all small boat single hand sailors.  Contact Wayne for more information. This is a great chance to get a youngster started in one of the clubs Opti’s or Lasers!
