With the New Year also comes the annual dues statement. Remember to get your dues paid to keep your privileges, slips, and waiting list position intact. The Board and Committee Heads are planning...planning...planning. The racing, social, and Club calendars are being forged as we speak. Highlights for Social include; the Ski trip in February, the holiday pitch-ins, Mother's & Father's Day celebrations, the Commodore’s gig, and the Final Bash. The racing schedule highlights three BIG “open” regattas, the Spring and Fall series, culminating with the famed Hornback Regatta. There’s plenty of Sailing Club fun and enjoyment for everyone...and don’t forget to volunteer and have even more fun!
The board members have also approved to publish the Telltales/Webtales online only...with the hope to reduce printing, mailing, and double formatting time. We notify over 500 people (via E-Mail addresses) when the “Tales” are distributed to online - in color and with pictures.
As for our new Race Committee and Safety boats, our specially assigned committee is putting in much time and effort to make sure we get what we need and that it will last for many many years to come. Look for some special work parties to be announced to prepare them for Club use. I hope to see you there. Question: What type of sailboat is hanging from the Boathouse Grill's ceiling?

![]() Well, so far Old Man Winter hasn’t been too awfully harsh! We’ve been spared the large quantities of snow that Colorado has experienced and it “really” isn’t too soon to be thinking about March...when we can be getting our crafts “ship shape” for the sailing season.
Our ski trip this February hosted by Cheryl Roberts will be Saturday the 17th at Perfect North. Meeting at 9am at the lodge, ECSC members will have a full day of ski activities and pizza. Right: From last year's ski trip
Also, I am posting the Social Schedule for the coming year with known hosts at this time.
If you feel so inclined as to host one of the vacant events on the schedule (Memorial Day Cookout, 4th of July Pig Roast, or the Final Bash), please contact me at 566-0353 or at lindajohnson@indy.rr.com
The schedule on the website is now up-to-date: Click Here
I sent work credit letters out to all of you who worked on social events in '06. Thanks again to all of you who helped with the events and if you have any questions regarding the credits, just give me a call!
See you this spring on the water!

Not much gets done at the Club this time of year...it's all done at home by the Committee Heads. I'm a Club grounds guy and there's been no change since the invemtory done for the trailer/boat storage fees. But hey, I have done a bunch of E-Mails and phone calls! :)

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for his or her participation in last year's ECSC racing program. Last year was a great success and we could not have done it without your help.
We are looking forward to an exciting new year with the start of the season swiftly approaching. We have set the dates for the spring and fall series races and are currently looking for interested people to act as race committee. We are also planning several fleet and match race series along with the five regattas held every year. So, whether you’re new to sailing or an old timer, racing sailboats will only help to improve your sailing skills and you just might have a little fun out there, too. We hope to see you on the race course this year.
Right: Nick with a self-pic in early January
There will be two preseason race meetings held at Sailboats, Inc. The first is on February 21st and the second March 21st. Both will start at 6:50pm. Race meetings are informative and fun and it's the best time to let your voice be heard. We hope to see you there.
This year, our Club is replacing our old Race Committee pontoon boat with a new custom built boat that has been designed by Rick Graef, Charlie Brehob, and me (Chris) with input from many other Club members. This new boat will make it much easier for us to run the races and regattas.
We are also purchasing a new safety boat...a center-console RIB (rigid inflatable boat). This new boat will also greatly improve our ability to train and rescue any boater in distress. The new boats will be at the Club in time for our April 18Th Competitors' Meeting at which time we will have an orientation on their use.
This Competitors’ Meeting (and race management seminar) on Wednesday evening, April 18Th, is at 6:50pm in the upper shelter at the Club. This meeting will also be a time for everyone to get your boat ready for the year. We’ll be discussing bottom preparation, rig tuning, and other assorted tips to get your boat race-ready.
Spring Sundays begin on April 22nd at 1:30pm and Wednesdays on April 25th at 6:50pm.
Remember, OUR racing program is VOLUNTEER DRIVEN. Each Club member who skippered or crewed in a Club race in 2006 is expected to and should volunteer for at least one series race Committee assignment. Contact Chris or Mike to sign up.

| Orange Bowl Regatta |
|
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support on our recent trip to the Orange Bowl Regatta in Miami, Florida. As you may know, two Eagle Creek and two Indianapolis Sailing Club Junior Sailors participated in this Regatta on December 27-30, 2006. This is a terrific experience for the Junior Sailors. Cody McCoun and Jacob Hubbard from Eagle Creek and Cameron Borkowski and George Jerman from Indianapolis Sailing Club participated in this International Event. There were some of our friends from I-LYA and Bay Week there as well. Thank you also to the Williams, Katie, Evan, Erika, and EJ for coming down to support us. There were about 129 Laser Radials (the class we raced) and 189 total Lasers including the radials, full rigs, and 4.7s. The participants were from all around the world and there were some world class racers participating. There were another couple hundred 420 sailors to go along with 200-300 Opti sailors, too. The winds were pretty strong (20 gusting to 25 mph) the first day and really pushed us. The waves were also something we had not experienced much in the Midwest. The next two days were better for us with winds 12-15 mph. The final day was windy again with gusts building to 25 mph. While we would like to have finished higher, we really learned a lot and made some good friends.
This trip was a great experience that we would all like to repeat next year and we would like to recruit more I-LYA sailors. We know it would not have been possible without the help of parents who supported and/or accompanied us, the Borkowski’s for the great triple rig trailer they built and the snacks and drinks they sent, Jason Hubbard and Brian Jerman for driving us and coaching, Eagle Creek Sailing Club and Indianapolis Sailing Club for both financial support as well as providing some of the boats and equipment, and the I-LYA Yachtsmans Fund for providing some travel funds to help defray some of the expense. We are already planning for next year. So far, the four of us and Erika and EJ Williams are planning to go!! We want to encourage other junior racers to come also. It is a great experience.

Jacob Hubbard

| Bailer's Tips & More |
|
About three years ago, I was in a my favorite harbor pub just about thirty miles west of Portofino. I love the Mediterranean but not the tourist spots, so I am required to keep my location vague out of pure greed. I keep this port in my bank of favorites...before the masses find it and overrun it with high rises and timeshares.
Below: Cody and Jacob rigging a Laser in ![]() This is the main reason I have been reluctant to contact the authorities about my 12th cousin's (twice removed) disappearance. The Bailer's 12th Cousin twice removed? I know, it does not make sense to me either and then once my fingers run out, my math ain't so good. So, let's put this entire relationship aside and concentrate on what is most important. My name is Bailer. I have been a member of ECSC for a number of summers...winters I spend on the Mediterranean. I have received ransom notes and such for the last couple of years, but I am not one to open my mail, and well, Tailer and I never really did get along (he being Tailer and all). Still, he is family and I feel obligated to come home and kick around and try to get to the bottom of his kidnapping...if that is what it is. In the mean time, I'll pick up the slack on his Tips...
Kind Regards.... The Bailer

Our ECSC Sailing Program was founded with the mission of developing knowledgeable youth sailors and to instill in them a love for the sport of sailing that will serve as foundation for the future of the Club, the sport, and their life.
Goals for 2007
Please help us continue reaching for these and other goals! Our Club has made a very large commitment in boats, coaches, and support equipment...not to mention the amount of time and effort expended by the kids' parents to foster our sport of sailing. Please help support this Jr. Sailing Program.
If you would like to make a donation to the ECSC Junior Sailing Program, please indicate the amount on your ECSC membership form with your check. Donors will receive: Above: Erika and Cody in Mid-December $100 - $150: an ECSC Junior Sailing T-shirt $50 - $75: 60 tickets for sailing prizes $25 - $50: 30 tickets for sailing prizes Over $20: 25 tickets for sailing prizes Drawing to be held at the 2007 Mayor's Cup Dinner
Something to Think About "I have seen the change in kids that we have brought through our sailing programs." Your child will only sail if you make the commitment and make it fun.

| New Safety and Pontoon Boats |
|
Late last fall, our ECSC Board approved expenditures to replace our RC boat with an all aluminum replacement Pontoon boat. This boat is currently being built by Custom Fabrication and Marine Mfg. of Ohio. We have just received our first pictures of the build and they are posted on the website. We will continue to post updated photos when we receive them.
This boat will be as maintenance free as possible. It will include several storage boxes that will enable us to store all of our Race Committee and Safety gear on the boat permanently. The current timeline is to have the boat in Indianapolis by March 1st for accesorization. This hull will be powered by our existing Honda motor. Also, The board approved the purchase of a replacement Safety boat. We are in the process of purchasing a Caribe UB 15 SC. This is a rigid bottom inflatable. There are several pictures of a sistership (not ours) UB 15 also posted on the website. This boat will be powered by a new motor (30 HP Tohatsu). We also will store this boat on a covered lift station that will be placed in the existing Safety boat dock. A trailer will be purchased to hold either the new Caribe or the old Whaler.
Right: Jacob on a Laser in Mid-December The Whaler is currently being "reconditioned." It has about 100 1-inch holes drilled in it in strategic places and is being stored indoors in an attempt to dry out the inner hull. This does seem to be working. In the spring, the holes will be sealed, the hull will be painted, and repairs will be made to the steering. The intention is to have this boat available as a junior sailing/coach boat and as a back-up safety/mark boat for our larger regattas. It will be stored on a trailer and dipped when needed. The pump boat is in line for reconditioning in the spring also. Anyone interested in helping out at a boat work party this spring (Work Credits!!), let me know (rgraef@indy.rr.com) or watch the telltales and the website for more information.

| Girl's Sailing |
|
It has been said that our children hold our future in their hands. If that is true, then the future of Eagle Creek Sailing Club looks very bright. We have a great group of juniors this year waiting to get the mainsheet in one hand and the tiller in the other...and back on the water to test their skills. After all, they were still on our water duking it out on December 16th (midwinter weather), getting ready for the Orange Bowl Regatta...wearing their winter hats! This season, I'm planning to help with the organization, logistics, and travel for our juniors...specifically the girls sailing program. We are also combining with the juniors in the Indianapolis Sailing Club for many of our youth regattas this season...including up to eight regattas now in the I-LYA Traveller Series. This combined effort helps us get more kids and boats onto the water at these venues. Isn’t that what its all about?
There ia a new link now on the main page of our website for our Junior Sailing Program and in it is listed all the potential regattas for this season. Click Here I'll soon start gathering E-Mail addresses to help with communication...but I'm thinking our first formal regatta will be at ISC on April 14th and 15th. Start getting your wetsuits in order, this was a rather cold one last year! Then, when the weather breaks, look for work parties to get our boats, trailers, equipment, and bodies into shape as well as sailing sessions as time/weather dictates. And any adults who would like to help with the training sessions, please let me know. We always have a good time. Hang on to your hats, girls! This is gonna be one whale of a sailing summer...especially with our new coach boat!! |
