However, as the weather permits, a little ice skating in the harbor will also help the winter time to pass more quickly. At least coming out to the Club to check the ice will give you a good excuse to visit your boat...she misses you too you know.
Our Social Chair is inviting all members to call him (502-8080) with your suggestions for new events. The Harbor Master is already busy beyond belief with projects getting underway to improve the workings of the Club. Hats off to our Membership Chair and her committee for a smooth transition and for getting the big job of March notices out...and the new members warmly welcomed. Also, a big salute to our gorgeous Race Committee Chair who is busy holding pre-season meetings to get things rolling before the ice breaks. The big question there, is who is bringing the blender? Be sure to check the schedule and show up to protect your rating and learn about the new 3 boat-length circle at marks and obstructions. Also, big plans for the junior sailing and adult learn-to-sail programs are being rumored for the 2009 season. Boat and water safety will continue to be a priority for our group of new sailors - young and old. As always, please offer the benefit of your experience to our special group of new sailors. As you can see, all of our valued Club volunteers are making ready for a great season to come. Give them a call with your ideas and offer them your extra assistance to help events run smoothly and be more fun for everyone. Keep warm and think sailing! See you at the dock soon...

What a great year we are going to have. Our days are starting earlier and the days are getting longer. Before we know it our days will be getting warmer. Meanwhile, as we wait for that first robin, flower, or a rustling main sail, our social calendar starts to fill up. I am looking for five more great hosts. We only have five great social events remaining. All the hosts and their crew earn Work Credits. I have a need for Memorial Day, Father’s Day, Labor Day, and the Hornback hosts. The schedule on the website is now up-to-date: Click Here Contact me ASAP at 317-502-8080 or chaunceyolin at yahoo.com.

Boating Safety You are responsible, as the operator of a vessel (and required by law), to file a formal written report of an accident. There are four conditions that require you to fill out and send in a boating accident report. These are when:
Be alert for damage to your boat’s fuel system...replace fuel fitting, hoses, and tank if needed.
Trailering Precautions:
Our Lift Station
Pre-Launch Precautions:
Launching: At this point, the boat should be able to be launched with a light shove or by backing off the trailer under power. Finish loading the boat a sufficient distance from the ramp so others may launch.
Parking:

Safety & Education Goals for 2009 Left: Our Club Please help us to continue reaching these goals!
Junior Sailing Team - 2009 This year will be a great year for us, also. I look forward to having two new junior members on the team this year. They are: Katherine Jones and Raymond Muller. Both of them just turn 13 and looking forward to some good times sailing and racing with the fleet. This year’s juniors who are trying out for the team are: Erika Williams, Becca Hallstedt, John Fisher, EJ Williams, RJ Greaf, Austin Greaf, and Ryan Wood. Late February, there will be a junior team pizza meeting. I will notify you of the place and time. I hope to have the full 2009 calendar in place by then...along with other stuff that’s going on this year. So guys and girls, start working out and reviewing the rules of sailing...and staying out of trouble.... This year’s team ECSC will be HOT’er! We also have an opening in our Junior Race-Fellow Scholarship Program. If you know of a non-member boy or girl who likes to sail, have them contact me. ECSC has made a very large commitment in boats, coaches, and support equipment (not to mention the amount of time and effort expended by the kids' parents) to foster our sport of sailing. I wish to say “Thank You” to all of the Club members and our new board members for their support of this our 8th year.
Note to ECSC Members: Work credits will be offered this year for assistance with this program!!

From our reporter, Bill Harrington, on scene in Southern Florida: So, I leave early this morning for a one hour drive to Everglades City to go kayaking in the Everglades National Park with a few other folks. After spending a few hours on the water, it is time for lunch and a beer or two. So, we go to a place I've never heard of before...Camellia Street Grill in Everglades City (population 400). As I am walking out the door to get back to Naples for Happy Hour, I hear someone yell "Harrington"! I look up and see Tom & Pam Moore. Ends up, they arrived in Everglades City earlier in the day in their trawler and were moored at the Rod & Gun Club (an old Hemingway hang-out). They had been told that Camellia's was a good place to eat...and there I was. If they had been about 2 minutes later, I would have been gone. Can't hide from anybody!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the racers and volunteers, alike, who participated in the 2008 Racing Season. The success of the racing program is a direct result of the enthusiasm of its volunteers! We are looking forward to an exciting new year with the start of the season swiftly approaching.
The January race meeting was a chance for racers to meet, greet, and otherwise get reacquainted. It was great to see the 14 persons or so who braved the foot of snow that day! An outline of the Spring & Fall Series, Super Sundays, Regattas, and a suggestion for a Pro-Am Series was presented. Then, on Saturday, January 31st, Rob, Bob, and Janet (pictured right) attended a 2009-2012 Racing Rules seminar presented by Cowan Lake and North U. in Cincinnati. The meeting was directed by Bill Gladstone...a sailor of world-renown, Volvo World Cup Judge, America's Cup Protest Committee, and contributor to the current edition of the latest International Racing Rules of Sailing. The course helped to refresh the “old” rules, while bringing to light the newest rules definitions. Our next winter race meeting will be held February 18th, 6:50 pm, at Janet’s house. We will discuss the RRS/Changes and complete the 2009 schedule. Race meetings are informative and fun…and they are the best time to give input! There will be a Racing Work Party, Saturday, April 4th, 9am. This is scheduled in ordered to get the boats and equipment set up, make repairs as needed, and place the permanent marks out on the water. You need not be a “racer” to attend and earn work credits!! As well, there are several projects looming that will require the expertise of y’all! So, whether you are new to sailing or an old salt, remember, all we wanna do is have some fun!

| Bailer's Tips & More |
|
Welcome to the new year. I’m sailing the coastline of the Mediterranean as I hunt and peck Jan/Feb's addition of Bailer. The Mrs is with me and she’s pretty good at baccarat,...in fact, so good we were asked to leave Monte Carlo. Finally, we have been kicked out of someplace and it was not me that caused the problem! I try to keep up with what’s going on in the States. I am led to believe all sorts of things when I read the news, click on the telly, etc. I suppose all this talk of change and the failing economy keeps me confused. but, one thing I know is we all need to keep a positive attitude...otherwise we fulfill our prophesy. Now in this spirit, I propose a number of changes at the Club. Most I think you will agree with, because I am the most popular member of the Club. But, please if you do not like these ideas, then keep it to yourself...as you know I am sensitive and you do not want to be the member who hurt Bailer's feelings.
1. Dress Code, I propose that all the male members are required to wear Kilts made of seersucker, so they do not really need to be ironed. Dress shirt and traditional Blue Blazer. Ladies, well, the Mrs told me she would not wear any uniform and to stop talking to her. So ladies, wear whatever you want. 2. Make it legal for me to use my “hurley” to slap people in the shins when they displease me. 3. Practice and learn how not to displease me. 4. Make it illegal to launch your boat if the lake is frozen. 5. Stop paying me so much to write this thing...whatever it is I write? From this day forward, use the funds for the Club! Bailer's wisdom, I offer, gratis.
6. In the men’s room we need to post signs: Tall One Sink - Short One Toilet. Right: Sun Cat 7. To generate income for the club I propose a raffle: $5 a ticket and whoever wins has at their disposal a large group of volunteers. This group will clean the winners boat inside out, make any repairs the owner deems necessary, and then launch the boat and have its sails ready for Mariah. Raffles can be complex and confusing so I offer my services to keep track of everything. To get started, I am buying the first ticket! 8. Grant me permission to end this installment with grace and dignity. Besides, how many new ideas can one head absorb? Sail on, Sail on.... The Bailer
