As I sit down to write my first Commodore article of 2010, the snow is falling outside my window, the temperature is WAY below freezing, and Eagle Ocean is still covered in ice. Despite all of this, I can’t seem to keep my mind off of the upcoming sailing season. I think it’s my recently diagnosed disease of IwannasailNOWitis. I’ve heard it affects most sailors who live in cold climates. You may also be experiencing it. Symptoms include, but are not limited to, yelling “starboard” at other traffic when approaching four way stops, wearing a wet-suit in the shower, planning a hot-dog and beer night every Wednesday, calling your bathroom a "head" and your kitchen a "galley," and finding yourself driving onto ECSC grounds on your way home from work. . . . without meaning to.

Club Stats
Memberships 242
Slip Waiting List 45 (30 Passed)
Wet Slips 166 plus 10 temp
Water Level 788.51 (790 Normal)
Lake Acreage 1,360 Total (850 south end)
But seriously, the winter is a great time to plan those "boat projects" that you put off last year. I have found that planning your sailing season is the best way to ease IwannasailNOWitis. Many of our Club members ease their pain from this debilitating disease by taking winter trips to far away sailing venues. If you have been "winter" sailing, write a short trip report and E-Mail it to our publicity chair Evan. Your fellow members would love to hear about your sailing exploits. Reading your trip reports might just ease their IwannasailNOWitis.

Speaking of "winter" sailing, between Christmas and New Years a couple of our Junior Sailors – RJ Graef and EJ Williams traveled to Miami and competed in US Sailing's Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta. Both ECSC Sailors sailed in the 135-boat Laser Radial division. Our kids were joined by sailors from all over the world including about 25 kids from the I-LYA Lake Erie District (of which 11 were amongst the 135 radial sailors). I am proud to report that RJ was the highest radial sailor from all of the I-LYA kids and EJ was right behind him. Both of our junior sailors had a great time and represented our Club very well.

While RJ and EJ were competing against the best junior sailors in the world, Jason Hubbard and I competed in the Orange Bowl Open Regatta. While we "only" had 28 lasers in our fleet, it was one of the toughest fleets I have ever sailed in. The winner and second place boats were sailed by American and Canadian Olympic hopefuls, Kyle Rogachenko and Robert Davis. Snipe world Champion Augie Diaz didn’t even crack the top 5. Great times, warm weather, and good wind were bountiful on Biscayne Bay.

I would like to welcome our new members and let them know that there will be several social events, regattas, and other unscheduled spontaneous opportunities to enjoy the Club and make new friends during the coming season. This ECSC season is starting to take shape with facility improvements and new event activity planning well underway. Your committee heads are hard at work planning for a great 2010 sailing season.

Our Social Chair, Chauncey Olin, always could use volunteers for our great array of social events. Our Harbor Master, Ralph Merriman, is already busy beyond belief with projects getting underway to improve the workings of the Club. Hats off to our Membership Chair and her committee for getting the big job of membership notices out...and the new members warmly welcomed. Our new Race Committee Chair, Kenny Chapman, is busy planning some great new events. The big question is who is bringing the blender? Also, big plans for the junior sailing and adult learn-to-sail programs are being rumored for the 2010 season. Please make sure to give our new Safety and Education chair, Ki Hickok, all the support you can. Boat and water safety will continue to be a priority for our group of new sailors - young and old. As always, please offer the benefit of your experience to our special group of new sailors.

Keep warm and think sailing!

See you on the water soon...

All ECSC members should have received the 2010 Annual Dues and Fees Statement by now. If you did not, please notify me at 317-575-9837 or schmidtjane@att.net.

Your paid dues and fees must be postmarked no later than midnight Saturday, February 28, 2010. Remember, your 2009 keys will be good through 2010 with the exception of the Sail School Loft key.

On March 3rd, all 2009 members not renewing are removed from the Membership Database. They also will forfeit their wet slip or be removed from the Wet Slip Wait List. If at a later date you decide to renew, upon receipt of all outstanding dues and fees, your name is reinstated into the Membership Database and placed on the bottom of the Wet Slip Wait List.

In addition to the 2010 Annual Dues and Fees Statement, you may have also received the following additional Agreements or Forms:

1. Winter Storage Agreement for members with one or more boats on Club property as of January 1, 2010. This storage period ends on May 1, 2010.
2. Slip Rental Agreement for members who had a permanent slip assigned in 2009.
3. Pass/No-Pass Form to members who “passed“ on an assigned slip in 2009.

Left: More attendees of our Final Bash

If you sub-leased a slip in 2009, take no action until you are contacted by the Harbormaster with information that a permanent slip or another sub-lease slip is available. Do not make a payment for a wet slip unless you received the Wet Slip Rental Agreement.

Ralph Merriman, our Harbormaster, will review any open slips and will be contacting members at the top of the Wet Slip Waiting List for their interest in a permanent slip or sub-leasing a slip. The Harbormaster maintains the Wet Slip Waiting List.

If you need a Membership Card replacement, please put a note into the envelope when you return your annual dues payment to me. The annual Membership Directory will be mailed in April after all the slips and parking spaces for the 2010 season are assigned by the Harbormaster.

Rich Fox is serving as assistant membership chairman this year and he has been busy fielding questions, receiving applications, etc. from prospective new members. We are already off to a good start for 2010!!

I'll be looking forward to hearing from all of you in the next month.

We all are looking for a great year of sailing. We just have a few more bitter cold days to endure. So, prepare for an even better year in 2010.

I have sent work credit vouchers to Jane Schmidt for those who worked on social events in 2009. Thanks again. For all of you who helped with the social events, if you have any questions regarding the credits on your dues statement, just give me a call!

Right: Even more attendees of our Final Bash

I have prepared a social agenda for 2010. We are needing a few great leaders to help prepare the 2010 Events.

I have a need for hosts for the Father’s Day Sunday June 20th, Commodores Event Saturday August 14th, Labor Day Monday September 6th, the Hornback, and the Final Bash November 6th. All the hosts and their crew earn Work Credits.

Contact Chauncey Olin ASAP at 317-502-8080.

Racing
Kenny Chapman

Good day ECSC sailors, it is all I can do to contain my needs for sailing on Eagle Ocean these days. The ice does make it somewhat difficult, but it should be gone in a month or two.

This year's schedule of races is complete with the first race being a Super Sunday on April 25th. Notice this is not the first weekend in April yet all other Super Sundays will be the first weekend. All Sunday races will be limited to three races with durations to fit the time frame of 1:30pm to 4:00pm.

Right: Rick, Jason, and RJ at the Orange Bowl Regatta

This year we will have two other Sunday races each month starting with Bimini Fleet Sunday on the second weekend of each month providing there is no Regatta or Mother's Day as in May. The Bimini Fleet will be comprised of anyone not yet ready to race their sailboat in their respective fleet yet still wishing to compete at a more relaxed level. This fleet will be a true JaM fleet (jib and main) no flying sails will be permitted. All types of boats will be permitted and fleet separations will be adhered to as in all other races. So talk to your competitors and get them to race against you even if it's just for fun. The first Bimini Fleet Sunday is June 13th.

The second new Sunday series is the Single Handers Sunday. It will always be the third weekend of every month barring any Regattas or holidays. The first weekend for Single Handers is June 20th and it will be as billed one person per boat and you can fly any sail you can handle. These races will be of the normal fierce competitive nature we enjoy here at Eagle Creek, so get out your rule books. Talk to your buds and get them to come out and compete against you. The only way we can get these series races to work is to have sailors on the water racing. You only need two boats in a fleet to constitute a race. So talk them up and let's build those fleets.

Our first major open Regatta the Mayor's Cup will be held May 15th and 16th with Friday the 14th serving as welcoming day. This Regatta has long been a Highlander class regatta and for the last few years a class regatta for the Hobie Waves. This year we are going to possibly have as many as twenty Hobie 16's racing as a new points race for a five or six state region. This is special due to the fact that our Club started off as a beach-launch catamaran club consisting of mostly Hobie 16's. With that in mind, I will ask now and later that anyone with a motor on their boat be willing to tow out a Hobie or a Highlander and maybe look out for them as you go in at the end of the day.

Left: Some of the Lasers at the Orange Bowl Regatta

Editor's Note: Two "Atta-Boys" to whomever can see the boat-rigging error in this picture!!

The fleets so far look like Hobie 16, Highlander, Hobie wave, Red, White, Blue, and Green (Portsmouth). The three one-design fleets will start separately as most likely Red, White, Blue, and Green may start together depending on the number of boats. The Mayor's Cup goes to the fastest boat on the lake (at least when I used to run it). It may not be the first place finisher in any one fleet; one bad race can slow down your collective time.

Rules meetings will be held on the third Wednesday of each month and anyone interested in running races or regattas may sign up for RC or Safety duty at these meetings. Any leftover dates will be assigned to people having participated in last year's racing program. Count on at least three duty dates. Location for meetings to be announced.

Looks like Indianapolis gets to host an I-LYA Traveler Series race again...this year most likely on June Saturday June 12th at ISC. This is a fun regatta for kids across the Midwest and we aren't always assured the I-LYA will select one of the Indy clubs to host. We've been alternating the hosting between ISC and ECSC...last year was at our Club. No matter which club holds the race, both clubs work together with the hosting duties.

We in Indy are honored to be chosen again this year. This turns out to be quite the spectacle with three race courses running simultaneously. So, bring your boat out and watch from the sidelines.

It's a new year and I hope everyone is ready for a great summer of sailing. If you have kids between the ages of 10-18, make sure to get them signed up for our sailing school. We only have a set number of spots.

So glad to hear how two of our juniors represented our Club and the I-LYA well at the Orange Bowl Regatta this year. Both RJ and EJ are products of our junior sailing program and are now instructors in our program for more upcoming juniors!!

Right: EJ at the Orange Bowl Regatta

The Orange Bowl competition was fierce. There were eleven juniors from I-LYA who raced in the Orange Bowl and out of those eleven, RJ and EJ finished 1st and 2nd. They finished 50th and 74th respectively out of 135 total Laser Radial sailors. Good job you guys!

This upcoming season, we're continuing our two successful programs for sailing instruction:

1. Summer Youth Sailing Camp (two weeks again this year)
2. Saturday mornings open sailing classes

Information on these programs can be found on our Club website.

Save $25 by registering by April 1st for our youth sailing camps!!

I want to thank all of the people who donated to the junior program. We wouldn't be able to do this without the support from our members and parents. It gives our juniors opportunities that many people do not have! Thank you!

Notes

Got a message from Jason with info on the upcoming America's Cup Regatta...starting Feb 8th. Just might be on TV!!
