Ah, a new year is here...along with those New Year’s resolutions. I am happy to report that Jim Weir is home and recovering from a nasty bout with a gallstone. I visited the Club last week to see if the rumors I had heard were true; that ALL boats are out of the water. Yes, it is true! For the first time in several years! But, I have heard reports that boats have been seen sailing on the lake as late as the 1st week of January. The winter blahs are currently being held at bay by the fact that we have had very little snow. Thus, we have not had an epidemic of “cabin fever” yet. One way I have learned to prevent cabin fever is to get out and do things in the winter. Take a walk thru the park, go ice-skating, and visit the Club for a walk thru the woods.
With the Colts out of the playoffs, I guess we are free to turn all attention to basketball and winter trips whether it is to the warm weather climates or to the snowy mountains. Spring Break will be here in a couple of months and then we can really start to get the boats ready for another season. The Board is busy planning next year’s activities. So, if you have any ideas or would like to get involved and help, please contact the committee chairperson. Remember, work credits can be earned to offset those dues for next year...which reminds me to remind you to get those applications and checks returned to Rich Fox before the March 1st deadline. Racing has started their winter meetings, so if you need a place to go and meet and talk with the racers, the first Wednesday of each month at the Sport Bowl is the place; 7pm is the time. Till next month, please pass the grog!

When you come back to the Club this spring, you’ll probably notice a level area behind Bob Bodish’s work shed. It used to be a hill. But now we can easily park boats and maybe build a pole barn for more storage of equipment we have. Grinders and new Sink Thanks to Bob Lee and his expertise in plumbing and supplies, we refitted the septic system grinders with new incoming/outgoing pipes, replaced check valves, and will also be getting a new sink with garbage disposal for the kitchen. Winter Storage It was a brisk day when Rich Fox, Ki Hickok, and I counted boats. About 180 are stored at the Club this winter. Thanks Rich and Ki. Membership Dues Reminder The deadline is Feb 29th.
New Gas Our first work party on January 2nd included Charlie Brehob, Roger Knapp, Wayne Myers, Jim Dolder, Bob Bodish, and me...lifting the 500 pound new boat gas locker off a semi trailer. The locker holds the race committee and safety boats' gas containers safely. Good Job! There’s work to be done, shipmates, even in the heart of winter.

The Journey Continues.... Four years ago, Nick Marson, Joe Romero, and I made our way out to ECSC on one of those lazy Wednesday nights. Tony Hubbard, a friend of Joe’s had invited all of us out to come and crew on his J/22 "Syndicate." Both Joe and I had previous sailing experience but were unaware of the sailing opportunities available in the Indianapolis area. For Nick, it was his first experience of many. We were fortunate enough as first timers to Wednesday Night Racing to sail on an evening where there was good breeze. After some exciting action on the water, we enjoyed hot dogs and beverages and then met local comedians Bruce Cameron and Kenny Chapmen. From this point onwards, we were hooked and were invited back the following week. That first summer, we learned to sharpen our keelboat knowledge in the J/22 fleet. I sailed on "Hooked on It" with Dick Lowe, Joe sailed with John Swift on "Cheap Thrills," and Nick with Tony Hubbard on "Syndicate." After a very enjoyable summer, Joe, Nick, and I became close friends and since we all attended college at IUPUI. We spent a lot of time together both on and off the water. That winter, we met and discussed the idea of starting a Sailing Program at IUPUI and using ECSC as our home base. After a great deal of discussion with ECSC and IUPUI and with the backing of ECSC members such as Tony Hubbard and Wayne Myers, we were able to come to an agreement that allowed us to host a small Collegiate Sailing Program at ECSC.
With the program in place and the objectives established, we began our trial run of the organization. The first year, the organization proved a success and many friendships were made between ECSC and IUPUI members on and off the water. Four years later, the program is still going strong. IUPUI Sailing has come a long way since Nick, Joe, and I first crewed for Tony Hubbard on that first Wednesday night. We now actively compete in Intercollegiate Regattas in the spring and fall against universities such as Notre Dame and Michigan State. In addition, we also established connections in the Chicago Big-Boat Scene and regularly participate in events such as the Chicago to Mackinac Race and the Chicago NOODS. This year’s Mackinac Race was a personal highlight for me as I was not only able to do the race on the same boat as Bruce Cameron, but also win our Beneteau 40.7 One-Design section by a close margin and placed 12/198 overall. This past summer, Wayne Myers, Tony Hubbard, and Bob Hickok, were able to establish the ECSC Junior Sailing Program. IUPUI Sailing members were able to be involved by assisting the training of the new junior sailors. The Junior program is very important to ECSC as it provides future Club members by instilling the love of sailing at a young age and completes the transition in sailing from the beginning through college-aged and finally onto becoming a regular ECSC Member. More information is available about the ECSC Junior Sailing Program on the web: http://www.iupui.edu/~sail/ecscjuniorsailing.htm This year is exciting for me as I am graduating from IUPUI in May with plans to remain in Indianapolis and join ECSC as a regular member. Both Nick and Joe also have similar plans. It has been a long journey, but it is my hope that the friendships we have made at ECSC and the IUPUI Sailing Program over the past four years will continue to be successful. For general information on IUPUI Sailing and event photos, please visit us on the web: http://www.iupui.edu/~sail See you on the water....

Jr. Tyler Andrews of ECSC finished 9th out of 31 Laser class boats at the Orange Bowl at Miami during the Holiday break. Tyler said, after finishing 4th in 2 of 12 races, "My new boat is fast." Young Tyler is also racing in the Rolex Olympic-Class Regatta 2004 at the United States Sailing Center Miami on February 26-30. Good Luck, Tyler!! Dr. Phil, also known as Phil Tate, a long time member's son (Tom Tate, membership #37), has quit his job for sailing. During the next few months he will be at the Fort Lauderdale Yacht Club and the United States Sailing Center...working his back side to the bone for a chance to win the Finn Olympic Trials 2004. Dr. Phil is ranked 15th in class, but has a newer boat with gear and mast to help. His main goal this year is to keep the top guys in touch. Phil has a long road to travel for the 2008 games. Great Party: Bob & Janet Hickok First to go sailing: SJ21 and J24 What can I say about Bob & Janet Hickok? I left their names off the Team Leader Page. Sorry About That! We sometimes describe our family and friends as good, friendly, caring, understanding, helpful, and patient. Jim Petersen was all of these adjectives and more. He left us to be with his maker just before Christmas. I raced against him. I raced with him. He taught me about racing and life. We will miss him!!!!

Times….they are a-changing! You may have noticed, just as I did, that many of the articles in this Telltales referred to an Internet address or E-Mail address. How long ago was it that that would not have been so? The methods of communication and information exchange (C&IE) are rapidly changing and yet evolving. Many of us have already learned our C&IE methods and possibly see this Internet as something new (and potentially expensive) to learn. For those young chippers who are still in the learning mode, it’s not so different….since everything is new to them anyway. I suspect if I asked Rich Fox for a profile summary of our Club members, he would respond with quite a diversity in ages...meaning that there are a good number of members that may not yet have changed their method of C&IE to include the Internet. In case you may not have known it, this monthly newsletter has been available on the Internet in our Club’s website for three years! I suspect, however, that it’s just a few of our members that have viewed these Telltales. They are either being viewed by our IUPUI sailors and/or Juniors (because they aren’t on the Telltales mailing list), or by those few who know that the website version is posted almost a week before the mailed version gets to them. It cost the Club $2,500 last year to print and mail the Telltales. Now, I wonder what else we could use that $2,500 for? I suspect the racers would have a few suggestions. Being more a social sailor (not that the racers aren’t….), I might make different suggestions. But hey, either way, it seems there are other uses for that $2,500 than spending it on soon-to-be outdated communication methods. At the least, how about a $10 reduction in dues per membership?
Now….I suspect that somewhere in the future, our Club will dispense with mailing the Telltales. However, that may be years (decades?) away yet. In the meantime, I hope to show our membership the benefits of web-based news to make this transition easier and maybe sooner. First, I’m hoping to spice up the web Telltales so it looks better. It’s easier to put color pictures on the web. Maybe our younger members could help out here. It seems they’re already bypassing us anyway with their IUPUI site (including the Juniors). Secondly, I’m hoping to send out a reminder E-Mail message to the membership once a month when the Telltales are available for viewing. Having already read the Telltales online a week before receiving them via snail-mail, your need/want for the printed copy becomes insignificant. Uh….Did you pickup the significance of that second task? To send out E-Mail messages, I must have an E-Mail database setup for such. Rich and I are currently in the process of modifying the Club database to include multiple E-Mail addresses per membership...with the ability to retrieve them for sending messages. Times….they are a-changing! We now will have a method to quickly communicate information to the entire membership (or at least those who have E-Mail addresses and give us permission to use them). With time, you might see more and more messages from the Club. Please understand, it is my goal to NOT be intrusive in this endeavor. That means if you do not want messages sent to certain E-Mail addresses, we won’t. And, we will try to be selective in what and how many messages are sent. For this Telltales, I will have already sent out reminder E-Mail messages to all those known E-Mail addresses. Please help us hone this database. If you do not want messages sent to certain addresses we already have….or want messages sent to addresses we do not have, let us know. You can respond to me for now (Evan@indy.rr.com). Yes, for some it might be kicking and screaming. Oh well……

26’ San Juan Sailboat. Easy sailer, sleeps 6, galley, head, 4 sails, 5hp OB, easy on/off trailer, red hull/white deck, 5"10" headroom, this is a real nice clean family boat. I might consider a smaller SJ21, Hobie, Cat.22 or other smaller trailer sailer as partial trade (my sons want a boat of their own!). The boat is stored in my backyard on Zionsville Road and can be shown without much trouble on my part. I recently bought a S2 8.0 Mid as a project and won't be needing two boats come spring. $5,900 OBO. 299-4351 Bob Meehan rjmeehan1@aol.com 19’ 1982 Hunter swing-keel. Very good condition; very well maintained. Vector main and jib in great shape. 4hp Mariner with reverse also included. Motor always starts and was tuned last year. Interior cushions also in very good condition. Comes with Magic Tilt trailer with spare tire. Boat is ready to sail. Please feel free to contact me with questions 317-557-2574 or dgkorinek@yahoo.com. Asking price is $3500.
17’ Daysailor - Spindrift. Main and Jib, sail bag. Licensed trailer. All in good condition. $1275 obro. Dan Clark 927-7157 home or 405-4334 work or dan.clark@ercgroup.com. 1972 Durabuilt Highlander. Real good shape. It was kept in a barn much of its life. Has four sets of main sails and jibs with one spinnaker. All are operational as I can tell, but I've only used one set and I've never used the spinnaker. Includes a set of life jackets, ors, trailer (which is in excellent shape), and a boat cover. Although mostly functional, the boat cover is in marginal condition and could use some work. $2,500 OBO Bob Adams, 317-774-8112 or boba@teterfamily.org.
