COMMODORE

The latest weather prediction…… lots of water and lots of wind. Hope things stay that way for a while.

From all indications, Wayne and crew did a great job putting the Finn Thing Regatta together. After Saturday’s first set of races though, it looked as if everyone had had the snort whipped out of them.

Gee Wayne, did you order that much wind or did you just want them to know Indiana gets its share of clean crisp air?

We have had a busy month with socials and races. Along with the Finn Thing Regatta, the Father’s day brunch, hosted by Roger Black, and the Mayor’s Cup Regatta, hosted by Edna and Rick Sprowl, were excellent events and well attended.

At this time there is not much to say so I’ll save some space and pass the hat to the rest of the crew. But before I sign off, I must put a plug in for one upcoming social event….. the Commodore’s Dinner and Dance which will be a dinner and dance. This is not a pitch in; just bring yourselves. I am asking for your hard earned cash up front (as soon as possible before August 5th) so that we can plan the dinner thing which should prove to be a great buffet.

We will have a great sounding rock and roll band and as a special treat, I have persuaded Mr. Chapman (Kenny to most of us) to once again be the moderator for his infamous Chinese raffle. Mark your calendars for August 18th. Check inside for more details.

HARBORMASTER

Hello ECSC Sailors! The water is up to and above 791’ above sea level. This means two things; the first is that the water is about one foot above normal Eagle Ocean level, and the second is that I can’t pour concrete when it’s above my forms. The reason for the unusual depth is the Police and Fire games and some of the events at the Park. Now don’t get me wrong, these Heroes deserve all the credit they get. The fact they are grossly underpaid for all the work they do should go with out saying. The water wasn’t this high for the world rowing championships the City held here a few years back.

One thing I do know is that we are still shy of our normal rainfall for the region by about 3 or 4 inches so far. I have been a member since 1992 and sailing the Lake since 1987. When all the brouhaha dies down, the people in charge of the dam are going to pull the plug and the water will go down as fast as the year they watered all the golf courses in town...then said they didn’t.

Did you notice the tree-trimming job at the Club? I asked Bob Bodish if he had any good contractors in mind and he suggested Crockets. They are the guys that Ralph used a couple of years ago to reclaim some boat parking spots on the East Side of the property. The trimming is something we just have to do to keep enough room for all of our dry sailors.

By the time you read this article, I will have moved many boats to their proper dry slip. The problem is it is just impossible to get members (through no fault of their own) to get to their spot when another boat is in waiting to get to their spot. Another problem is the members that never move their boats for years on end; only to promise to raise holly heck if you offer to move it for them. Those days are over and I will move their boat. The only way they can stop me is to… Okay, there is no way to stop me. Be assured, the utmost care will be taken with all boats concerned and no member is to move another’s boat without explicit orders from me.

RACING

ECSC’s first shot at hosting an International Regatta was a great success. The 2001 Olympic Finn Class North American regatta was held at our Club with over 20 Olympic hopefuls from the United States and Canada participating. The first day it blew like stink, gusting 32 out of the west. I counted eight boats capsized in the first hour and two of them turtled...none of them ECSC racers. It was a great joy to watch these fantastic sailors compete as they skillfully sailed around the courses.

I watched the races on the water with Bruce Cameron and Kenny Chapman. All three of us were impressed...in fact, it was the first time I had ever seen Kenny speechless and Bruce admit that sailors existed that were faster than him!

Overall, the Finn sailors were impressed with our Club’s hospitality and quality facilities. A special thanks needs to go to Wayne Myers for doing all the legwork to make this event happen. Wayne has worked for two years preparing for this event and coordinating work assignments for all the Club members that volunteered for this event. Tim Hollingsworth also did a great job as race committee. The final results placed the Canadians first and second with Christopher Cook first and Mike Milner second. Third place went to Darrell Peck.

Thanks to Rick and Edna Sprowl for a fantastic job with the Mayor’s Cup Regatta. It takes a lot of time and effort, and the Sprowls have done a great job. Our next regatta is the ECSC. Please remember to register early.

We will be conducting a sailboat-racing seminar on Saturday July 21st for new racers. This will be held in the clubhouse at 12:00 noon and will be open to all that may be interested in racing their boat. We will go over the basics of sailboat racing and answer questions. Racing is a great way to improve your sailing skills while having a great time and meeting some fantastic people. Please come out and hear about racing and see if it’s something you would like to try.

It has been brought to our attention that it’s been many years since we have asked those who race to fill out a registration form that declares the type of boat and sails that are used in competition. This will help scoring and keep the PHRF Committee updated on any modifications you may make to your boat. You can pick up a registration form at the club racing bulletin board.

The last and final topic this month is Sportsmanship. Please conduct yourself in a manor that is respectful and courteous to your fellow competitors at all times. And please be courteous of those cruising sailors that may just happen to cross your path during your race; we all must share the lake. Please remember that although you may be in the heat of battle, the cruiser that just cut you off may just be battling with trying to get mustard on his turkey sandwich without rounding up and spilling a drink...a very noble task in my opinion. Respect your fellow sailors and they will respect you.

2001 MAYOR’S CUP REGATTA

35 boats enjoyed a weekend of wind, water, and spirited racing on the weekend of June 9th and 10th at the ECSC Coca Cola Classic Mayors Cup Regatta. We would like to thank those who volunteered to help. We couldn't have done it without them. Mike & Patty Kaschak, Colin Risely & Jenny Graff, Annie Cameron, and Jim & Lisa Wodock. We can't forget Steve Pithoud and Jim & Carol Dolder for getting up so early to make sure there was coffee and OJ for everyone.

Very special thanks go to our sponsors. Sue Ross of Coca Cola Bottling. Sue and Coke have been the title sponsor of this regatta for 9 years running, and their support has been instrumental in making this into the one of the best events of the year. Janet Hickock and Smee's Place, and Dave Richards and Dominos Pizza also deserve a round of applause for their generous donations of refreshments, gifts, and food.

On Saturday after the races, everyone enjoyed a delicious dinner prepared for us by Avon Catering. We had Bradley's Karaoke for entertainment. We hope everyone had a great time. It was also announced that Coca Cola will be sponsoring the Mayor's Cup one more year. Again, a big THANKS to everyone that helped make the regatta such a success.

Rick and Edna Sprowl

Hello Indy Highlanders

The table below is the point total half way through the Indy Highlander Challenge Cup Series. The ECSC highlanders leaped into the lead with a strong showing at the Mayor's Cup. ECSC has a total of 61 points versus ISC's 55 points.

Mark on your calendar the next regatta in the series, which is the Governor's Cup at ECSC on September 8th and 9th. If the ISC highlanders want to keep it competitive going into the last regatta of the series, which is the Indy 5 on September 15th and 16th, they will need a better showing at the Governor's Cup!

SOCIAL

What a busy month we have had the Club. First, I would like to thank Roger Black and his crew for a fabulous Father’s Day brunch. The weather cooperated and we had a great turnout. Good job everyone.

The July 4th pig roast will be at 5:00pm.. This is always a great social. Our hosts again this year are Greg & Carole Branham. Don’t forget to bring your covered dish. Do try to be there by 4:30pm so we can start on time. Did you know that you can see part of the downtown fireworks display from the Club? It’s a great way to enjoy the holiday without all the hassle of traffic and crowds.

I am planning an ECSC night at Victory Field on July 26th at 7:00pm to watch our Triple-A World Series Champion Indians play the Pawtucket Red Sox. We did this last year and everyone really enjoyed the evening. Look for all of the details in this issue of the Telltales. We need at least 25 people in order to go as a group. Please feel free to invite your family and/or friends as we are not limited to the number of people.

Just a reminder that chair parties are popping up everywhere. Why, just the other evening we were able to watch the ECSC Olympic tryouts for the discus and shot put down by the picnic tables (those of you involved in these tryouts know who you are!!). This just goes to show that you never know what you’ll see at our Sailing Club.

As always, please give me a call if there’s anything you would like to see happen or if you would like to volunteer for a social event. TaTa for now.

Edna Sprowl, Social

MEMBERSHIP

As opposed to last month when we had nine new members join our Club, this month we have none. However, we’re still sitting at 251 members...the highest I remember ever.

SAFETY & EDUCATION

Ahoy! Meeting with all the 2001 Sail Indiana participants Saturday, June 16th was great fun. Time was spent on registration, orientation and Wayne's Laser rigging demonstration. The cookout afterwards afforded a chance to catch up with returning Sail Indiana sailors and to learn more about our new sailors. It is exciting having the opportunity to teach sailing techniques to such enthusiastic and positive individuals.

Special thanks to Wayne for his informative rigging demonstration, Doctor Bob for picking up burgers, hot dogs, condiments, and manning the grill, and to all those who brought the delicious side dishes.

Sail Indiana sessions have officially begun!

Keep your eyes on the bulletin board for safety updates.

SHIP’S STORE

The ship’s store was created to provide our members with sportswear sporting our Club logo. We have T-shirts, sweatshirts, raingear, tank-tops, hats, license plates, burgee flags, luggage, and much much more. Almost forgot – koozies, too!! Clothing items offered in prior years have been reduced in price 25%. "FOLLOW THE BLUE LIGHT"

Many members have asked about ordering children’s clothing. Our graphic people have told me that printing our logos on children’s sized clothing poses some special artwork re-sizing problems, but can be done. If you are interested in ordering children’s clothing, or any other special items or sizes, please let me know. There are minimum quantities required, but we will try our best.

The Ship’s Store will be open on most social and regatta weekends. Stop by to say Hi.

TAILER’S TIPS & TALES

Welcome to another useless and information free visit with your old pal Tailer. As no one seems to be willing to step up to the plate and give this highly paid staff writer a chance to take a well deserved vacation… and, as I am still here in spite of the wishes of a few who would see me disappear as soon as the most convenient bolt of lightning can be summoned to send me to Davy Jones’ Locker, I think I'll take that as a license to run amuck (of course).

All of you have heard of the game "Simon says" haven't you? Well, let's try a new twist. Let's see if you can go a few rounds in a game of Tailer Sez! Now, all of you know the rules, right? Of course you do!

Well… , for those who haven't seen their boat during the last month (at all), I will talk very slowwwly. I will tell you to do things that you should all be very familiar with, sailing stuff, Club behaviors, etc. When I start my orders with the words: "Tailer Sez" you should follow them to the letter. If I neglect to say: "Tailer Sez" you can simply disregard them completely. It's just that easy. Let's begin:

"Tailer Sez, everyone leave their boats in the car corral during the Mother's Day brunch."

Aw c'mon you guys, only one of you was listening? OK, then let’s try again.

"Tailer Sez, everyone clean their boats for the season and launch them."

That's much better, I see we still have a few who don't quite get it. We'll try again.

"Everyone grab a rope and tie a bowline with it."

Hmmmm, some of you can actually tie a bowline, huh? Well, you didn't have to because I never said "Tailer Sez." We'll try again.

"All of the ladies must wear their skimpiest swimsuits while visiting the Club for the rest of the year."

Ahhh, such a predictable group. You guys are tops, keep up the good work. Uhh… speaking of tops…, oh never mind.

Here are some nice tips for you:

Tip 1) Come to the next chair party that you see. Those at the chair party should invite those walking by (and looking a bit wistful) to join. The true spirit of the Club resides in these gatherings.

Tip 2) Check out the Ship's Store at the next Club event and get one of those cool hats. Watch that huckster Larry January make an actual profit with the store this year. It's gonna happen, so get used to it!

Tip 3) Always lock the gate when leaving at night, get an extra gate key and keep it where it will always be handy. Don't be afraid to lock someone in by accident. If they are in there without a key, they should have purchased an extra and left it in the glove box of the vehicle that they drove that night.

Tip 4) Although I love to give the official goose chaser and grounds roamer, "Trouble", a hand out now and then. I have been told that we need to wean him off of his begging habits. I won't be able to help in this effort (because he will look at me with those eyes of his), but perhaps the rest of you should stop feeding him. When in doubt, seek guidance… Bob Bodish will know what to do, he always does.

Tip 5) Go to our web site and see the new aerial photograph that includes the new "B" dock addition. The address is easy to find at http://www.ecsail.org. The next time that you see Bill Harrington, you might want to thank him for his tireless efforts to maintain the web site over the years.

Tip 6) The next time that you see one of those IUPUI guys, shake hands and introduce yourself. I have it on good authority that during a recent race, one of them gave up the race to dive in and help a young fellow with a tipped over Laser who was needing a hand. Besides, have you noticed the coeds that have been here regularly?

Evan, Where is my latest check?!!! Dude, pay me or… Oops, sorry folks, I should take this up with Evan later.

Tailer, The Staffinator

LADIES FOR SAIL

Saturday 23rd was a perfect day for our spinaker clinic. We practiced launching the shoot, driving the pole, and steering downwind. We all learned to do each job and had fun as well! Our next event will be a Treasure Hunt on August 18th. This time we are emphasizing using your own boat for this hunt. Help will be provided at the docks if desired (starting motors, etc.).

See you there at 11:30am!!
