Sun and Fun in July at the Club Our summer is in full swing. Boats are in the water, water is in the lake, and our social and event calendars have successfully rolled through the spring and into summer without a hitch. With a great turn out for the Mayor’s Cup regatta, a fabulous Junior Regatta that drew 25 visitors from seven clubs, and the Wednesday night Club series starting to gather a loyal turnout, the racing program is providing many opportunities to meet on the water.

Our planned and unplanned spring social schedule has also had great attendance. The Mother’s Day Brunch, Father’s Day activities, and the parking lot chair-a-thons have lead the way for shore parties and social gatherings. I would like to grant an official note of recognition and accommodation from the bridge to all the volunteers who did the heavy lifting in getting these great spring events organized and then participated in helping getting fellow members and quests fed and properly socialized. Flag Officers’ Hats off to our front line volunteer crew and a grand salute to all our members and their quests who attended spring events.

Club Stats
Memberships 231
Slip Waiting List 35 (30 Passed)
Wet Slips 166 plus 10 temp
Water Level 790.91 (790 Normal)
Lake Acreage 1,360 Total (850 south end)
There are many upcoming Club events on tap for July. The scheduled events include the 4th of July Pig Roast, an ECSC Club regatta, the US Sailing Junior Sailing quarter final competition at Put-in-Bay Ohio, and the regular Club series on Wednesdays nights and a Supper Sunday mini regatta for July. The ECSC Club regatta will feature a separate fleet for new and established members who prefer cruising. Our goal is to have 15 boats in the fleet for an afternoon of fun on your boat. NO racing expertise or PERF number needed because this is not a race. There will be a specially formatted buoy course that will tour the Lake for a low key, made for fun, relaxing sailing experience on the water followed by a Club mixer and party on shore. This will be a great way to learn more about your boat and have a front-row seat to watch the racing fleets jibbing and jibing around the Lake while you run the blender and enjoy another cool beverage concoction. Become a charter member of this fleet at the ECSC regatta.

Any of these July events are great opportunities to make the best use of summer time at our beloved sailing venue. Attend the Club events early and often all summer long. Use your Club to relax and have a safe and great time around the water during the sailing season. Do you have an idea that you think would improve the Club? Let me know. Be sure to check the web site and this e-newsletter for the details to July’s festivities. Plan to attend and bring a friend to enjoy being on your boat at Eagle Ocean. You deserve some quality time at the lake with family and friends.

See you dockside...

Charlie, Kim, and the Kidd family hosted the Father's day Brunch serving scrambled eggs, sausage, and many delicious deserts. Everyone had a great time celebrating the first day of summer.

Jim and Kevin will be cooking the Pig for our annual 4th of July Pig Roast. This will be their 20th year to cook all night. They promise to have something special for us. Fran & Ed Rice and committee will be the hosts. So, be there or be square for the festive feast starting at 5pm. For those who don’t like the pork, there will be hamburgers, dogs, and a little old-fashion corn on the cob. Soda pop will be provided.

Everyone is asked to bring your favorite summer cookout side dish. Remember, please bring enough so everyone can enjoy a taste....

We have one social hosting opportunity left. I need someone to host the Labor Day Cookout, Monday September 7th, 5pm. This is a golden opportunity to get your maximum Work Credits for 2009. Please call me (317-502-8080)...we all need a leader. That could easily be you (also fun for new members)!

Most of all, come on out and enjoy your Club. There is something for everyone! The parking lot and Club grounds have never looked any better.

Check out the ECSC website for other upcoming social and racing events.

New Member Regatta

Six new member skippers and their family and friends participated in the Inaugural ECSC New Member / New Racer Regatta held on Sunday, June 14th.

At registration each skipper received a complimentary souvenir ECSC burgee to display on their boat. Prior to the Competitor’s Meeting, an orientation of the Race Committee Boat provided each skipper and crew the opportunity to learn the countdown sequence, the flags, and the ECSC race course placards.

Two races were held in conditions that started with no wind and eventually built to 8-10 mph wind from the south as two storm clouds passed to the south and the north. The sight of lightning to the north resulted in the abandonment of the third race immediately after the start. The results are:

Red Fleet
1st Mark Vander Kooy – J24

Above: No idea who this is, but it looks good.
White Fleet
1st Les Eigenbrod – Flying Scott
2nd Katrina Cicak – Hunter 210
3rd Mark Truax – Flying Scott
4th Michael Petty – Catalina 22
5th Aaron Spiegel – Pearson Hawk

Immediately following the racing, everybody gathered in the upper shelter house for a late lunch and awards. All skippers received an award in the form of ECSC Work Credits to apply towards their 2010 Annual Dues.

Many thanks to the following members who helped support the Regatta:
George Alyea
David Alyea
Pete Combs
Denise Fox
Bob & Janet Hickok
Tony Hubbard
Jane Schmidt

It should be noted that five Memberships Chairs (past and present) all supported the New Member/New Racer Regatta, including George Alyea, Rich Fox, Denise Fox, Pete Comb, and Jane Schmidt.

ECSC Regatta

The ECSC Regatta is scheduled for the weekend of July 11-12. On Saturday, the Registration Desk opens at 8:30am, the Competitor's Meeting is at 10am, and the First Warning Flag will be raised at 1pm. Up to seven races are planned for the Regatta.

Right: Norm on his Hobie

New to this event will be a Cruising "Bimini" Fleet (one fleet) that will sail separate and much longer courses around the Reservoir on Saturday only. The winner will be recognized as the 2009 ECSC Cruising Champion during Saturday's dinner.

Registration Fee for the Regatta is $30 with discounts available for US Sailing members and those sailing in the "Bimini" fleet. A great Race Committee is in the works.

Saturday's dinner will be Italian and music will be provided by Indiana DJs with dinner served at 5:30pm for hungry sailors, members and guest. Non-racers who would like a dinner ($10 each) should notify Rich Fox at 317-815-8599 or rich_fox@yahoo.com no later than Thursday, July 9th to provide estimated headcount.

Sunday's racing begins at 9:30am, lunch (sandwiches) served at 1:30pm, and awards at 2pm.

Join the fun!

Laser NA Championships
Rick Graef

Club members Tyler Andrews and RJ Graef competed in the Laser North American Championships at the Buffalo Canoe Club in Canada June 25th to June 28th.

Tyler competed on a Full Rig Laser against 97 boats and RJ sailed the Radial Rig against 121 boats.

Both sailors made their respective Gold Fleets (top half of their fleet). After four days of racing with 10 races sailed, Tyler finished 46th out of 97 boats. His best finishes were an 11th and a 12th.

RJ, after 10 races in the Radial fleet, finished 42nd out of 121 boats. His best finishes were a 7th and a 10th. RJ said one of the highlights of the event was getting to sail against Canada's Laser Radial Olympic sailor from the last Olympics.

Congrats to our Eagle Creek sailors on representing our Club well in a tough national event!!

Junior Sailing Camp
Over 46 boys & girls showed up and learned how to sail the past month. This year’s camp ran for 2 weeks, with many young sailors repeating for the 2nd week.

We wish to say “Job Well Done” to all of our ECSC sailing instructors: Erika Williams, Ki Hickok, EJ Williams, and Cody McCoun.

The first week, Monday & Tuesday, Coach Phil Tate had the Junior Bay Team working out. EJ Williams learned a fast lesson on the water...to not talk back to the coach. EJ was doing many 720 turns.

Also, the camp Juniors were coached by Rick Wood the second week.

I wish to say, “Thank you” to all who help out.

Junior Bay Week News
July 19 – 24 are the dates that our junior sailors will be going to Junior Bay Week this year.

Attendees are: EJ Williams, Erika Williams, RJ Graef, John Fisher, and Becca Hallstedt.

Team Support parents are Katie & Evan Williams, Rick Graef, Tony & Joyce Hubbard, Phil Hallstedt and along with Ki Hickok and Wayne Myers. It’s possible that Hannah Fisher will be Bay Week Coach. Will know sometime this week, if this works out.

Incredibly enough, the Spring Racing Series is coming to a close! We only have three more Wednesday races to go (including July 1st). The competition is getting fierce…

The third of our six Super-Sunday series races will be this Sunday, July 5th. Racing starts at 1:30pm and continues until 4:00pm...with as many races as possible until 4pm. Bring a snack to share afterwards. ECSC will bring the chicken and drinks.

In addition, ...the upcoming ECSC REGATTA, JULY 11-12th!!

    Right: Buzz Off

This is our “fun” regatta in which we host the Comet Territorials. This year we are adding the “Bimini Fleet”! The ECSC Registration, NOR, and SI are available on the Racing website to preview and download for your convenience. As always, the dinner and fun activities are open to all Club members and their guests. We will be hosting a Friday night “Welcome Party,” Saturday morning bagel/coffee bar, afternoon libations, and catered dinner. Following will be drinks, DJ music, and dancing by the moonlight. Please plan to attend!

In other news, the Skipperinas and their Lady Crew took to the seas June 27th for the first of their two outings led by Ms. Lisa Carpenter. In spite of the efforts of certain pirates and buccaneers (who shall remain nameless (lest they rest in infamy), the ladies were able to complete their naval mission and enjoy a bounty of food and drink at day’s end! Thanks again to the gals and guys who contributed so much to make this outing a success.

On June 13th, under the direction of Rick Graef (Regatta Chair), Wayne Myers (Junior Race Chair), and a myriad of VOLUNTEERS, ECSC hosted the I-LYA JUNIOR TRAVELER SERIES REGATTA...a one-day event bringing top talent from the Great Lakes Region to the “warm waters” of Eagle Creek. Our team took numerous awards, including EJ Williams, 1st place, Lasers. Congrats!!

    Bailer's Tips & More
    The Bailer

Well, things are looking up for me here in Bimini. I earned a promotion from Bar Back to genuine Bar Tender! The bar named "Cold Drinks and Trinkets" is basically a Tiki hut on a beautiful beach with the added bonus of the beach being placed directly next to the ocean...so, it's real pretty here, I must say. The news coming from pirates off the Somalian coast has slowed down considerably around the same time I had stated my plans to pay them a little visit. So, I consider this problem solved!

    Right: Trouble's New Look

Your friend Bailer will take a little time helping out the islanders, tending bar, and pursuing my new hobby: metal sculpture. I need to save money for some steel and a welder. There is a guy at the boat yard who is real good at welding, so I think I will hire him to create my artistic visions. These visions will not come cheaply, and will only increase in value. So, if you are interested in getting in on the ground floor, give me a jingle on the coconut telegraph.

Other than this, I have not been up to much. I hope to come back to the Club for the winter season for now, I am busy securing my reputation as the foremost metal sculptor of the 21st century. I am very proud of myself and know you all are too.

Come visit or I will see you soon at the Club.... Sail on....Sail on!!

Just a reminder - please place the blue 2009 membership decals on your boats and trailers. If you have misplaced the ones I sent in February, please contact me for more.

A big thank you to Jim Hubbard and Pete Combs for all the work needed to get the new decals affixed to your individual docks. If any concerns regarding those, please contact me at ecsc_membership@yahoo.com.

    ========================================

Every now and then a photograph comes along that really captures the thrill and intensity of sailboat racing. Attached is a picture, taken by a professional photographer, of Denise and me (Rich Fox) racing at the 2009 Detroit NOOD Regatta (Lake St. Clair) during the last weekend of May. In the background are four Cal 25's that are on our tail.

This event brought out 192 registered boats of which approximately 75 of them were sharing the same race course as our Catalina 22 class.

Based on the look on Denise's face, I think she would much rather be sitting on a beach in Florida! But we had a great time.
