Hello ECSC Sailors.

Eagle Ocean has been abuzz with activity since the beginning of the season. Our Mayor’s Cup was a rousing success thanks to all of the great volunteers we have in our Club. Wednesday and Sunday racing has been cranking along as usual. Our Junior sailors have been making their weekly trips to enjoy racing against some of the best young sailors in the Midwest and to develop the friendships that will last them a lifetime.

I attended the 2010 edition of Ladies Sail this past weekend and I can guarantee you we have some very talented skiperinas!! The raft up following the poker run and treasure hunt was great as usual. Fathers day brunch lived up to its usual tasty reputation (thanks to all the volunteers who helped out)! I-LYA’s Junior Bay Week at Put-in-Bay, Ohio is just around the corner and our latest gaggle of youth is preparing to carry on our ECSC tradition. And best of all – We have had wind, water, and sun.

I have been reminded by several people lately how much they remembered their first time sailing. If I could ask each of you to do one thing for ECSC and Sailing, it would be to bring a new sailor out for an afternoon on Eagle Creek. Young or old, total newbie or used to be sailor – get them on the water. They will love it. We all have those friends who envy us when we say we are headed to the reservoir for a sail, or a brunch, or a race. Next time, invite them along!! You never know...you may just make a lifetime sailing friend yourself.

My plans over the next few months include attending Junior Bay Week, Racing the Chicago Mackinac Race, the Ugotta Regatta in Harbor Springs MI, The Verve Cup, and the Tri-State Regatta. If I don’t get an August article in it, will be due to lack of internet access aboard GOBLIN...a Nelson Marek 50 that will be my home for several weeks. I will also spend some time with RJ getting him settled into his collegiate career at Massachusetts Maritime Academy where he plans to study Marine Transportation and is looking forward to being on both their Dingy and offshore sailing teams. I am sure he will make many more lifelong sailing friends.

Sail Fast....

A big welcome to Dwight and Natalie Griggs from Brownsburg. They are sailing a Hunter 212.

We have had 12 new members join since 1/9/10. We welcome each of you and encourage everyone to participate July 17th in the New Member orientation and Regatta. It will be a great chance to get to know each other and to learn more about ECSC.

2010 DECALS ON BOATS AND TRAILERS
Membership goes to a great deal of trouble and expense in order to provide decals to each member so that boats and trailers can be properly identified. All that we ask of you is that you place these properly on your boat and trailer.

If you have not yet done so, please do this as soon as possible. In a recent stroll along the docks, I found 24+ boats without their 2010 decals. There are also many in the dry sail area as well as trailers in the upper lot without current decals. Please help us to correct this situation. If you have misplaced your originals, please contact me at schmidtjane@att.net.

New Members
Thank you for joining our Club and we hope you are enjoying your membership. As a reminder, new members should make sure they:

  • 1. Be sure to park boats in their assigned wet slip or parking spot by June 1
  • 2. Be sure to park empty trailers in the upper area trailer lot
  • 3. Remember that the 48 hour dock is a 48 hour dock
  • 4. Place the round decals on the forward left side of the boat and trailer

Right:  One of our Wednesday evening races

We have these rules to help maintain ECSC as a nice and orderly place for you to enjoy your sailboat with family and friends. This is also a good opportunity to reminder our older members of these same rules...over time we tend to forget and we are a rather lax Club.

To all our new members, welcome to ECSC. We are glad you are here!

There will be a New Member Orientation on Saturday, July 17th from 9:30am to 10:30am in the Club's Upper Shelter House. The Orientation is intended to provide new members with an overview of the Club's facilities and policies, as well as the opportunity to ask questions about any aspect of the Club's operation. If you have friends who may be interested in joining our Club, please encourage them to attend this Orientation. For more information, please contact Rich Fox (rich_fox@yahoo.com or 317-815-8599).

  • One of Our Youth Sailors

    Dear Eagle Creek Sailing Club,

Thank you all at ECSC for allowing the Sandusky Sailing Club the privilege of hosting one of your fine young sailors for the summer as a representing member of SSC.

RJ Graef is a very good sailor!! He is very accomplished sailing a C420 or a Laser, as well as his accomplishments in a Thistle. Not to make light of a situation, but I-LYA is lucky in the fact that there are and have been a huge number of accomplished young sailors over the past many years come out of the I-LYA program, but RJ goes even further in his acts on and off the water.

Last weekend at NCYC, he finished first in a Laser. Quite a nice finish, but consider that he gave away his hiking extension, at the beginning of the day, to a fellow team member for their Thistle and then he rigged a piece of line as HIS hiking extension and then placed first with a very old (almost 20 years) Laser sail that had been hanging in the SSC Junior Barn as decoration.

Right:  RJ & crew winning some award in the Mayor's Cup Regatta

On another occasion, RJ witnessed a young light Laser sailor having problems. RJ flipped his Laser over so he could help the other sailor back onboard their boat. A safety or coach boat wasn't around immediately, so RJ took control and possibly saved this young person, as it was reported, that the young sailor had been in the water for a while and also had an injury qualifying for an arm sling upon reaching shore.

Thank again Eagle Creek, you know how to pass along education, sportsmanship, and quality sailors.

    Sincerely,

    T. Park McRitchie

Hello fellow sailors of Eagle Creek!

So far so good on Wednesday nights and Super Sundays. The Bimini and Single Hand series both got off to a blazing start except nobody showed up for either one! Wait...there was a willing competitor for the Single Hander Races. It sure would have been lonely racing just one boat though. Thanks for coming out Scott.

The Wednesday night races have been well attended as well as the Super Sunday races we had back at the beginning of the month. Cheers to all of you who have participated.

    Right:  Ki on his Nacra

The Ladies racing program took off like a shot with Cassie Brehob at the controls. Although I wasn’t able to attend, I am sure there was fun had by one and all.

Our next Open Regatta will be the ECSC regatta on July 10th and 11th hosted and run by the Brehob and Berner Clans. I am sure we will be in for another great time at our Club. The beginning of the Fall Wednesday night series begins July 21st...mark your calendars!

    Junior Bay Week
On July 18th - 23rd, 13 junior sailors will take to the waters of Lake Erie at Put-In-Bay, Ohio. Of these, 10 are your ECSC kids ages 13-18 in the Laser Class. The other 3 are from ISC racing in the Thistle Class.

Sunday the 18th starts with inspection, registration, team liaison, and parent & safety meetings. Most of this day is spent in other meeting and group photos. The kids are assigned rooms (4 to a room) at a local hotel within easy walking distance from the club. Curfew is at 2230 hours...lights out at 2300 hours. Included that week: the “NO WHEELS” Rule! Quite simply, IF IT HAS WHEELS, DON’T RIDE IN OR ON IT.

Above:  Laser sailors in a Wednesday regatta

July 19th - 22th, the kids have wake-up call at 0630 with breakfast until 0745 hours. First gun at 0900 and racing to 1600 hours. Dinner at 1830 hours. The race course is off shore about 2 miles from the club and will have 3-5 races each day. Thursday night they have the award banquet with music and roast your coaches. Friday the 23rd is checkout from 0630-0830 hours.

As you can see, the kids and parents are kept very busy during the week. There are 200 juniors sailing in four classes at one time. There is no other regatta in the States quite like this one with all the activities associated with it. It's definitely the highlight of our summer sailing season!

I wish to say “Thank you” to our support staff: Tony & Joyce Hubbard, Rick Graef, Evan & Katie Williams, Phil Hallstead, Steve Earnhart, Phil Tate, Tyler Andrews, Ki Hickok, and Wayne Myers for all of their hard work in putting this together. Without your help, the kids would not know this part of sailing and teamwork.

And, much thanks to all of our Club members who helped with their donations to send these kids to this major U.S. event.

    Junior Sailing Camp
I wish to say “A JOB WELL DONE” to, Ki, Cody, Erika, EJ, and Becca for all of their hard work the past two weeks.

Having over 50 kids learning how to sail on our waters was a big job. Also, a thank you to many other parents who helped out.

    Other Junior Racing News
So far this year, your Junior Team has raced at ISC (Indy), Hoover Sailing Club (Ohio), Sandusky Sailing Club (Ohio), and North Cape Yacht Club (Michigan).

Results are great and can be found on the web (the I-LYA website).

    Something to Think About
It takes a long time for some people to accept something new. One simply has to recognize that progress is about change and development. By definition, attitudes will always follow one step behind.

For all the educational books, courses, and videos, you can’t duplicate time before the mast.

Yatz Cajun/Creole will be for dinner, along with salad and dessert!

Dinner tickets are $12 per person.

Entertainment for the regatta will be Indy’s own, the Max Allen Band!

They will play from 7pm -11pm. Please stick around and enjoy the tunes!

    Check them out at www.maxallenmusic.com

We look forward to seeing all of you…don’t forget to bring your costume!

    What Is This?

This "item" showed up at our launching ramp on a Wednesday before one of our normal Wednesday evening races.

No one knew where it came from or for sure what it is for.

    Any ideas??

Best suggestion so far is a small kid hanger.
