COMMODORE

Spring has come and by the time this issue reaches your kitchen counter top, the calendar will have us closer to the first day of Summer – June 21st.  Also by this time, A-Dock will be in, mulch and plants will be installed and planted, the grounds will have been groomed, the Spring racing series underway, classes for Sail Indiana set to begin, and we will have had two of our major summer socials  Mother’s Day and Memorial Day.  And, our first regatta - Mayor’s Cup - is scheduled for the weekend of June 1st.

Next up will be our Father’s Day brunch, Friday night race June 7th, and our biggest summer cookout - July 4th Pig Roast.

While we are on the subject of socials and upcoming events, let me plug my Commodore’s  party.  I have changed both the event and date.  I now will be hosting an evening event – Saturday August 17th,  with a catered dinner and DJ utilizing a Hawaiian theme (so we can get some use out of all those Tiki torches we have been storing in the shelter house closet for years).  Reservations and tickets will be necessary so that we can monitor the number of members attending and advise our caterer.  So keep your eyes glued to the summer newspaper ads from Stein Mart and Kohls to buy those loud and colorful print shirts.  The shirt won’t go to waste, you can also wear it to the Buffett concert.

One of my required duties as Commodore is to read the Club’s Bylaws and Rules handbook.  Only a few of us have ever read this booklet and at that, most of us just skimmed it.  But while reading it, under Article IX the Club Logo and Burgee are defined.  “The Club Logo shall be a silhouette of a boat, showing the main, jib and hull configuration with the luff of the jib designed to resemble the head of an eagle.  The Club burgee shall be a swallow-tail pennant, gold in color on a navy blue field with the letters “ECSC” in navy blue on a gold field.”  After reading this, it made me wonder who among our founding fathers designed this.  If you have any information please let me know.

One final note:  The lower shelter house is available for members to reserve for small private parties.  If you would like to reserve this shelter house, please contact me.  The use of the upper shelter house for private parties is quite limited following the ratio set out in the Club rules of six non-member guests maximum per one hosting member, and provided the use of the upper shelter house does not conflict with any scheduled ECSC event.

See you on the water !

HARBORMASTER

Hello all.  I hope you have gotten some sailing in by this time.  Those of you with slips will want to have launched by June 1st and have moved your trailer to the Farm.  If you cannot launch by then, call Rick Sprowl or me and we will find you a temporary parking space & maybe someone could use your slip until you are ready to launch.  Please put your stickers on your trailers and boats - this is very important if we need to contact you.

Welcome all new members.  If you have any questions please call us!

We have done so much work, but a lot remains to be done. Please call us if you want to volunteer for what is remaining.  Again, thank you to all you who do so much for our Club!

We have plenty of water right now and hopefully that will remain so through our sailing season.

Happy Sailing……...

RACING

Well boys and girls, we finally got a race off on the Wednesday Spring Series (May 15th), with winds of 12 – 15 mph from the South.  Red fleet started first and sailed to the East shore line and was lifted up to mark 6.  After making the turn and sailing down wind on port tack, some of these boats didn’t look out for starboard-tack boats coming up to the mark.  No one was hit, but there were some close calls...need I say more?

At the end of the race, Capt. Childs and crew was in first place, but the R/C boat wasn’t on station for the finish.  We had over 26 boats at the starting line -- great turn out!  Red Fleet gets top accolades with 14 boats.  Green and Blue fleets had 6 boats.  Yellow and White had 1 boat each.  YELLOW and WHITE sailors needed!  The current yellow and white sailors need some competition.  Make it a family night out OR the guys night out OR the gals night out.  Just come on out and join in the fun.  We nearly ran out of hot dogs on our May 15th Wednesday night cook-out with over 60 sailors.  THANKS to the IUPUI team that helped run the race and did the cooking.

Up and Coming News

June 7th, a Friday night, marks our first single-handed race...harbor start around 6:00pm.

July 6 & 7 ECSC Regatta—two days of racing in Wayne’s World for the ECSC Club.  The Comets are coming back again, only this time there will be 3 days of racing for them.  They like having fun.

Racing Rules

11.  ON THE SAME TACK, OVERLAPPED

When boats are on the same tack and overlapped, a windward boat shall keep clear of a leeward boat.

12. ON THE SAME TACK, NOT OVERLAPPED

When boats are on the same tack and not overlapped, a boat clear astern shall keep clear of a boat clear ahead.

13.  WHILE TACKING

Note:  Notice the word “shall” !

LADIES FOR SAIL

Mark your calanders for Saturday, June 22. We will be doing a SADIE HAWKINS REGATTA!! This is a turn-about race where the ladies pick the boat they want to skipper, and pick their (male) crew.  So fellas, don't be surprised when one of the lovely and talented SKIPPERINAS comes a'courtin.

This will be a PHRF race so that we can helm the boat we are most comfortable with.  Plan to have your boats on the water by 11:15am.  There will be a short Skippers Meeting at the shelter at 11:00am...with the first race beginning at 12:00.  We hope to sail 2-3 races.

As always, we will follow with refreshments.  There will be a sign-up sheet posted on the racing bulletin board.  We will also need volunteers to do race and safety committees.

SOCIAL

I hope those of you that made it to the Mother’s Day brunch have finally dried out.  Even though Mother Nature didn’t cooperate, I know that Bill Harrington and his crew did an outstanding job cooking and getting everything ready for all of the Moms.  Thanks to Bill and all his helpers.

By the time you get this Telltales, the Memorial Day cookout hosted by Jack and Karen Hale will have passed.  Thank you to Jack and Karen and all of their assistants who always do a great job.

Mark your calendars for the Father’s Day brunch on June 16th.  Roger Black will be hosting the event.  Roger has indicated that he still needs a few volunteers to help get everything ready.  This is a great opportunity for our new members to become acquainted with everyone.  I encourage all of you to think about helping out with any upcoming event.  The hosts cannot do it by themselves.  If you would like to volunteer for Father’s Day, please call Roger at 773-7396 or me at 244-1561.

Even though this doesn’t fall under the social category, I would like to make everyone aware of the book exchange that we have.  In the big shelter house there are several containers with books in them.  These books are for any member to borrow and return whenever they are finished.  You are also welcome to drop off books that you no longer want, so someone else can enjoy them.  It’s like our own little library.

I think that’s it for the social scene.  Remember to pack your chair in your vehicle for those spontaneous chair parties.  Please feel free to stop me whenever you see me at the Club if you have any new ideas for a social event.

TAILER’S TIPS & TALES

That's right, it's another episode of Tailer's Tips and Tales, the information superhighway here at ECSC.  This is where you can find all of the latest info on Club happenings and the real truth behind the scenes.  Did you know that Evan steals lots of cool Tailer stuff from you every month?

"Write a big one" he says every time and then he whittles it down to 2/3 of the original size and tells me that I can't say this or that.  Luckily for all of us, his fabulously sexy wife Katie does the personal spell check and puts bunches of cool stuff back in when Evan isn't looking.

Let’s talk about the weather.  Who stole it?  Where is it? How can we get summer to visit us this year?  Enter Trouble (Club dog and investigative reporter on the scene).  Trouble foolishly agreed to infiltrate a camp of roughnecks on a recent Wednesday night to get us the information that we need.  Smelling hotdogs and hamburgers, he raced into their camp without his disguise and was instantly spotted.

As Trouble puts it: "Someone stepped on my tail and as I was trying to escape, their "Big Man" held me down and shouted at me in an unintelligible language.  He knew my name, I heard him say "TROUBLE, blah blah blah!"

over and over again."

Trouble narrowly escaped with his life.  Still, he did his usual thing and came back with the story about the food on location.  The weather will get here, drive out to see the Club on a rainy day and see how nice the weather is at your boat.  Boats have an invisible force field.  It is always sunny on your boat, even in the middle of winter … Really!  Come see for yourself.

New guys come to the chair party.  Local drug stores are ready to sell you chairs with armrests and cup holders for only $7.99 plus tax.  Get four, you can afford it and you have at least that many friends that might have forgotten their own chairs.  Get some chairs, you'll need them.

On the bright side, one thing that seems promising is the water level.  We've flooded twice to the point where you need waders to get on all of the docks.  The photos will pop up at a chair party near you soon.  So, you will be needing chairs...told you so.

If you haven't been sailing already, shame on you!  Let’s go right now.  No more excuses.  Just get a rainsuit and go.

Dangerous advice:

Tip #1) Spend time with Sue Ross right now … you'll see.

Tip #2) Come to all of the Club parties that you can and stay late.

Tip #3) Raft up with your friends in a cove (Evan recommends this highly).

Tip #4) Come to the Mayor's Cup dinner and sing at the kareoke evening dance party.

Less dangerous advice:

Tip #5) Get your hats, shirts, jackets, and vests from Max Gray at the Ship’s Store.  Wear the stuff everywhere.

Tip #6) Bring something nice for Trouble and notice what a great job he does.  One tiptoe through the goose poop at Rick's docks will help you understand (Editor’s note: ...and notice the lack of bees at our Club, a favorite Trouble delicacy).

Tip #7) When launching, try to not launch just before the racing program has one of its races (Wednesday evening and Sunday early afternoons).  It really gets congested on the ramp.  When you put your boat in, you aren’t always ready to blow out of there right away.  This tip reduces stress, be aware.

Tip #8) How many times do I have to say this?  Spring lines snug, bow and stern lines slightly loose!

Tip #9) When you are flying your chute downwind and a big puff hits you, threatening to slap your mast into the water, you should:

A)    Tell the skipper they screwed up again.

B)     Release the chute so as to hide the sail behind the main for later.

C)     Release the sheet just like any other sail.

D)    Put on your life jacket and put your head between your legs and….

Can't answer that one?  Come to a chair party and learn the truth.

Tip #10) Thank Bob Bodish whenever you get the opportunity.

The basics:

Tip #11) Put your dollar in the bag for your ice.  It's the honor system, let’s keep it that way.

Tip #12) Lock the gate when leaving after dark...get extra keys for your glovebox.

Tip #13) Be polite to others on the lake; you only get one chance to do this one right.  Don't blow it!

Tip#14) Relations with the Parks Department should always be nurtured.  We are the renters.  Any contact with Parks personnel must be in-line with Club policy.  That  is: we are the renters and we are always willing to help in any way that we can.

Tip #15) Unauthorized use of Club facilities should be discouraged (i.e. fishermen, pontoons, or anyone who pulls up to OUR docks to help themselves).  A good way to approach this situation is to identify yourself as a dues paying member of this private Club and mention that you are dead sure there are facilities on the public side of the Lake.  At this point, try to determine if they are Parks Department people then refer to tip # 14.

Tip #16) Have as much fun as you can this season, don't miss a day.
