The Club has been hopping with activity. The Spring Series Wednesday and Sunday races are well under way. Social hosted its first of many activities with the very well attended Mother’s Day brunch. Thanks to Bill Harrington and crew for another excellent job. Racing hosted the Mayor’s Cup regatta this weekend of May 21st. We had 28 boats with 8 visitors filling out very strong Highlander and Finn fleets.
Several boats provided entertainment during a no-wind postponement with a motorboat race ... complete with a starting gun and checkered flag finish. Jim Grant won hands down.

The Club’s first event of 2005 at the shelterhouse had a wonderful turnout with wonderful weather. Special thanks goes to our host Bill Harrington, and his helpers Rich White, Bob and Janet Hickok, Evan, Katie, Erika & EJ Williams, and Paige Roberts for putting the Mother’s Day Brunch all together. The Memorial Day Cookout hosted by Jack and Karen Hale is forecasted to have the same spectacular weather and I’m sure Jack and Karen, along with their crew, will be equally spectacular hosting the event. Don’t forget to mark your calendar to bring dad out to the Club for the Father’s Day Brunch hosted by Richard Lowe on Sunday, June 19th. We are missing one of the frying pans. So, if you borrowed one from the shelterhouse storage area, please return it soon. Thanks again to all who have volunteered to host events or help our hosts. If you are interested in helping out at one of the social events, please contact me or one of the hosts.

Slips OwnersThe May 20th deadline for launching has passed. I know the weather has kept some people busy, but all boats that belong in a slip need to be in a slip. Trailers should be removed from the grounds immediately after launching. No boat with a slip is assigned a dry spot unless subleasing to someone on the wait list. Thanks for calling me those who could not get in by the assigned deadline. If you haven't launched, don't be surprised if you find that I've put someone into your slip. Don't get mad at them or call them. Get mad at yourself, then call me (or Mike Gray) to get them moved. A $100 fine could also be levied. Let’s don't even go there. We have too many good folks on the wait list to waste a slip on a boat that’s going to sit on the land all year.

Dry Parking
a) It was in someone’s assigned spot. Most are listed in the directory. If not, see Mike Gray or me for an assignment.
c) It is for sale. In this case, I may have moved it to the left of the paved drive for better visibility for your potential customers. If yours is for sale, please have a sale sign on it. I've seen several potential customers come down looking and if Bob Bodish hadn't been there to tell them, how would they know?
d) Your membership status has changed from Family or Regular. Inactive, Social etc. members don't have privileges for boats on the grounds.
What year was this pic?
e) Your boat is Abandoned. If you're not a current Family or Regular member and you had a boat on the grounds, it may have been towed away by a law enforcement agency.
f) You couldn't park in your assigned spot because someone else was in it. Not your fault.

All that said, so far it’s been a great season. A little chilly yeah, but it’s starting to warm up.

The first big regatta of the year, The Mayor’s Cup, was held on May 21st and 22nd. We had a difficult time getting all three races off on Saturday due to little wind, but the sun was out and we were able to have some fun with a motorboat race...inspired by the real Tom Moore. Congratulation to Jim Grant for the win in the motorboat race in his light weight Lindenberg 22. Sunday was a much different story as we had great weather and great wind and were able to get another good three races off. Berret Rhoads from ISC ended up winning the Highlander fleet and becoming the 2005 Mayor’s Cup Winner with six firsts. ECSC’s Tyler Andrews won the Finn Fleet, The real Tom Moore won the Red Fleet, and Ken Lockhart got 1st in the White Fleet. For detailed results, check the Website. The Race Committee had their hands full with 180-degree wind shifts on Saturday to a number of boats breaking down...including their own RC boat on Sunday. Special thanks to all those who help put this regatta together. Mike Kaschak for running the races along with his crew Patty Kaschak, Edna Sprowl, and Rick Sprowl. RT Moore for taking care of dinner and getting some great trophies. Jim and Carol Dolder for taking care of the coffee and donuts. And….to all the ECSC Sailors & out-of-towners that showed up for the first regatta of the year. Thanks for making it a success!
June race assignments are: Wednesday’s: June 1st - Gray and Johnson, C.; 8th - Ashworth and Alyea; 15th - Kaschak and Sprowl; 22nd - Lowe and Drake; 29th - Fox and Mark.. Moore and crew; 19th - Hale and crew; 26th - Dr. Bob and crew. Sunday RC should be at the Club by 12:15pm and on the water by 12:45 for the 1:30 warning signal. Marsha and I were recently tagged by our illustrious commodore, Rick Sprowl, to write this article for the Telltales. I think Rick is doing a great job as Commodore and has obviously learned the art of delegating duties as we actually got the tag call from our first lady Edna.
By the early 1980s, the Highlander Class was going through a resurgence of sorts. Customflex was the new Highlander builder and they were producing what are arguably the best Highlanders ever made. The new Customflex boats were minimum weight and very fast...and selling quicker then they could be made. ISC’s Highlander Fleet 7 was growing by leaps and bounds. It was a great time to be sailing Highlanders. In 1986, my grandfather retired from sailing at age 86 after sailing for 26 years predominantly in Highlanders...his sailing days were behind him. I feel honored that I got to know him so well in his later years. About this same time, Bruce Cameron and I went into partnership on Highlander #152. She was an old wooden boat in need of a lot of work, but we could see her potential. It was several years before we had turned old rotten #152 into a beautiful black and white showpiece that went on display in the mall at Keystone at the Crossing. By the early 1990s, I was becoming disenchanted with Geist Reservoir. The property around the lake was being developed and with the development came an alarming increase in powerboat traffic. Driving out into the country with grandpa to our quiet sailing lake were now just fond memories.
Marsha here...my first sailing experience was in April 1993. After hearing about sailing all winter, John took me and our friend Kent Magers to race in a Highlander regatta at Lake Norman in North Carolina (picture left). It was pretty windy and I remember we did well in one race because four boats ahead of us capsized. That was exciting! We were sailing old #152 at this time and it had become a leaky boat again. That same regatta weekend we saw Fast Eddie, Highlander #969, for sale. We both joked about buying it...no more wet feet sounded pretty good. By that summer, we had decided to buy it and I had a loan booklet with my name on it (talk about trust)! That summer, we started racing as Race Fellows at ECSC. Every Wednesday night and occasionally Sunday, we brought the boat to the Club, set up the mast, put the boat in the water, and raced. Then we would bring the boat back out, drop the mast, and take Fast Eddie home. We did that for two years before joining. It was great to be able to meet some of the members and have a trial run of the Club before joining. Meanwhile, there was interest building in the Club for the Highlander – it’s great for summer sail since the winds are often so light. Terry Killen brought his Highlander #552 to the Club, and Bruce brought out #152. We had three Highlanders racing at the Club. So, John and I asked for a charter from the Highlander Class. They granted it and now ECSC’s Highlander Fleet 45 is the newest and one of most active Highlander Fleets.
John kindly called me his super crew, and if he thinks so, it is because he is the best kind of teacher. Every time we were sailing or setting up the boat, I would be learning from him what I was doing right or wrong and why. We traveled with Fast Eddie to many out-of-town regattas for several years and it helped us both to be better sailors. Between the two of us, we have thoroughly enjoyed all our experiences as race fellows, Race Chairman, board member, volunteers at work parties, and race committees. We feel that volunteering is one of the best ways to take advantage of getting to know your fellow members. We think this Club is one of the best clubs we have encountered in our many sailing experiences. Just sail around and you’ll see!

Let’s all say our goodbyes to Stan Dziacko. On Sunday afternoon, June 5th, his family is hosting a memorial celebration in our upper shelterhouse (that Stan designed) starting at 2pm. Dress is Sailing Club normal. Stop by to say Hi to the family, wife Carol, son Jeffrey, and daughter Jennifer. There just might be some “cookies & drink” leftover for you racers when you get off the water.
