Mother's Day kicked off the social season with Bill Harrington and Crew (Rich White and Linda & Greg Johnson) for a fabulous Brunch. The temperature was a bit chilly but the food was delicious. Pictures were taken by Colin Riseley's and displayed on Facebook. John and Joy Gilmor hosted the Memorial Day Social Gig. His Boathouse crew flipped the burgers and brats. Everyone enjoy the hospitality. Thanks again Joy and John.

Ahoy Eagle Creekers!Hey. other than a few normal rainouts on Sundays and a few near no-wind conditions on Wednesdays I would say this racing season is turning out quite well. I did notice the absence of most of the Blue Fleet at most of the races and some slight showings in the White Fleet, but remember I am pulling for you to get out there and have some fun. I will give you a trophy, but I can’t get your competitor out there...which is your job. It may be time for some fleets to designate a Fleet Captain...you know, the guy who calls everyone with a boat like yours before the races just to make sure you have crew or Sunday drinks.
Right: Mayor's Cup Regatta Our first major regatta, the Mayor’s Cup, was I must say an unbridled success. The total count of boats was 42! Heck, we haven’t seen that many in years. To this success, I must thank our Social Chairman Chauncey Olin for his monumental help making this regatta a thing of beauty! BTW, Dr. Bob and I will be hosting the Labor Day cookout as a trade off. Thanks again Chauncey! Mostly, though, I want to thank Jim Yeary (a former member) for brainstorming this regatta and going with my theme of “old schooling.” You know what I’m talking about if you were around for Governor Cup Regattas back in 95, 96, and 97. Jim ran those babies and we stunned the sailing world in our city and state. I would also like to thank Dr. Bob, my assistant RC, and his lovely wife Anne and their friend Rachel for their Finish Boat work.
Left: Dr. Bob & Kenny To my advantage, I have some super powers lined up as ECSC Regatta Director and RCO for our next open regatta with Charlie Brehob’s Clan and Bruce & Ethel Morgan Berner respectively. I am telling you, this is the hardest job at the Club! It sure seems to be easy when you have great lifelong talented friends helping out without even asking them. With the Berner’s at the helm, I can guarantee great races and with Brehob’s imagination in charge of the social, this should be another great event. So, if you want to race at your own Club or just come for the dinner, get a hold of Berners or Brehobs. If you do want to come just for the dinner/party, please pre-register for your dinner fees at least two weeks in advance so we can get an accurate count. Get ready Bimini Fleet and Single Hander racers, June is your starting date. Be talking to your buds to make them aware of these fabulous new Sunday series designed to give you more opportunities to race your beloved boat. Let's face it, these two series are great practice for cruising or just sailing on your “Creek”! so, come join us and “use” your Club! There are only four dates for Bimini Fleet and four for Single Hander Series. That’s only two less than the Super Sunday Races. Of course, there are more weekend racing dates in the new Winter Series, but that is a ways off. So talk to your peeps and get them active - we only get to do this stuff until we are really old.

Safety & Education
Just a reminder the US Coast Guard Auxiliary will be out for vessel safety checks on June 5th and 6th. On Saturday at 9am, there will be Coffee and donuts. The Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both Federal and State requirements for safety. No citations are issued and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency. But, a decal is awarded to display if the vessel has passed the examination.
Right: New Wednesday racing techniques??
An example of some of the items checked include: If you want a more in-depth list with pictures, go to this web site.

Catalina 22 Stuff
Catalina 22 Tune-Up Day for ECSC Regatta - June 19The Catalina 22 fleet will be participating in this year’s ECSC Regatta (July 10-11) with several boats and crew coming from out-of-state. ECSC Catalina 22 sailors are encouraged to participate. Rich Fox is hosting a Catalina 22 Tune-Up Day on Saturday, June 19, beginning at 10am and all interested ECSC Catalina 22 sailors are invited to attend. This event will begin with a review of the basic Racing Rules and Starting Sequence to help ensure skippers and crew are confident and comfortable on the race course. We will then spend time properly tuning the rigging of any individual Catalina 22 sailboat, whether or not they plan to sail in the ECSC Regatta. We will then spend time on the water with practice starts and running very short 2-leg courses.
Another Indiana Catalina 22 sailor, Gary Allen (Patoka Sailing Club), received honors as the 2010 Catalina 22 New Racer of the Year. Gary purchased his Catalina 22 Sport “Passin’ Wind” (#15703) last October from Sailboats Inc and only had two regattas under his belt going into this year’s Nationals. Gary finished 12th in the Silver Fleet. A total of 44 Catalina 22s representing sailing clubs from 10 states participated in this year’s National Regatta. Privateer Yacht Club (Chattanooga, TN) organized this year’s event with Joe Wheeler State Park as the venue. Race Committee PRO Richard Dommel ran 7 long races in wind conditions that varied from 3 to 21 mph throughout the week. The Catalina 22 fleet will be attending this year’s ECSC Regatta.

Notes
I went to pick the Highlander Friday using my son's Jeep, as it has a trailer hitch, and I don't have a vehicle with one anymore. So I get to the club and find the highlander trailer has a 1 7/8" ball and the hitch is 2" though I could have sworn when I first looked at it it said 1 7/8", - because I figured that is what the was on the trailer.Right: Mayor's Cup Regatta So this ball has been on for over 10 years and I am not going to remove it easily, and I want to get the boat home so I can get it ready for its new owner. I put the trailer on the ball and note the bottom tongue of the hitch fits snugly against the ball. Then I wrap the safety chains around the hitch and fasten them with as little slack as possible. I then take 20' piece of 5/16" line and begin wrapping and tying it in what seems to me the best manner possible to keep them from coming apart. As us usual there were a couple of fellow sailors present, Big Mike another new fellow I don't know, so I asked for their opinion of my arrangement. Both said I would not trust it or even attempt it. But not me! Well I made it home to Rocky Ripple with out a "hitch"! After backing the boat into the driveway it was still a snug and secure as when I left the club. Now I did keep the speed under 40mph and try to miss the pot holes, but did encounter some rough road going down the hill on Kessler near Illinois. So then I took some WD40, two pipe wrenches, and a 5# sledge to the ball nut, and was only able to turn the ball. U haul gave it a try with an impact wrench to no avail and suggested a muffler shop to burn it off. Midas to the rescue! $5, a torch, and heavy duty impact wrench did the job! Thanks Midas! Now for a 1 7/8" ball. This boat is going to Long Island, NY. RICHARD LOWE
