The ice in the harbor has been fickle this winter, but we did manage to get in a fun weekend of skating, sledding, and snowball fights. The ice was much too soft for playing hockey, but we made the most of what we had. I saw Evan Williams with a camera, so there may be some incriminating photos on the Web version of this TellTales.

Spring Thaw / Boat Prep
It’s just around the corner and we can’t wait. The Club will be shaking off the ice and coming back to life. I’ll be shaking my head and wondering why I haven’t finished my winter boat chores. Oh well, that Poli-Glo will keep just fine in the bottle. If procrastination is an art form, I must be Picasso.

Final Bash
Mark your calendars for a change of date for the Final Bash. Cheryl Roberts has landed us a spot at the Rathskeller, but they didn’t have our normal date available. This year it will be on November the 12th at 6:00pm.

Volunteers
Racing is still looking for volunteers to fill some slots for Series Racing. Call Chris Cunningham if you’d like to sign up. Also, Bob Hickok has a spring Club opening work party planned for early April.

See ya’ on the water soon....

In Passing

Long time member Stan Dziacko passed away last Wednesday (February 23rd) after struggling for some time with bone marrow cancer. His wife, carol, is doing well, as is daughter Jennifer and son Jeffrey.

Per Stan and Carol's wishes, there will be no traditional funeral, but rather a memorial ceremony that will be held in late spring. Rather than receive gestures of sympathy, Carol has asked that friends make a contributions in Stan's memory to the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Amongst contributions to this Club, Stan helped design our upper shelterhouse. Look for that memorial ceremony to be held here at the Club in "his" shelterhouse!

Dumb luck was on my side again when picking the date for the ski trip (too bad I’m not as lucky with lottery numbers). The weather was awesome. Most of us skied without gloves and a jacket and the snow didn’t get too slushy until about 3 p.m. Sunshine, fresh air and plenty to eat and drink – what more could one ask for?

The Board agreed to change the date for the Final Bash to the second Saturday in November, so mark your calendars now for November 12th to be at the Rathskeller. I’ve even got the band, Uncle JuJu, lined up to provide the live entertainment.

All the Social events have been taken. Ed and Fran Rice signed up for the 4th of July and the Chili Cookoff is going to be hosted by Roger and Michelle Knapp. Thanks so much to all my hosts for stepping forward and contributing to make the club social activities so enjoyable.

Work Party
The first Harbormaster work party is scheduled for April 2nd at 9am. We've got the Club clean-up/set-up to do, build a dock finger, repair a dock, and other fun stuff on the agenda. So come out and get to know some fellow sailing mates while working together. Work Parties = Work Credits. You could even donate work credit $'s to the Junior Sailing Program!

Fenders
All the fenders (ie bumpers) that were left attached to the docks this winter have been removed for dock maintenance and ascetic reasons. They're by the ice machine for the time being, but will be disposed of at the Club clean-up. I suggest you take your fenders off the docks when you pull your boat for the season...just trying to keep the docks and grounds looking nice and in tip top shape. Reference item #3 on your Wet Slip Agreement.

Slip/Sublease
It’s that time of year for some new slip and sublease assignments off the wait list. If you think you're close, be expecting a call from me in March. It averages out to about 5 to 10 permanent slip changes each year. Subleases vary with use. I'll send you the details and you send payment and documents to the membership chair Denise Fox.

All members should fill out the Rental Agreement and Membership documents completely. There's quite a bit of hand offs between the Harbormaster, Membership, and Treasurer, so please help us out.

Thanks….

RACE MEETINGS. Date and discussion topics: March 15th: Sail Trim with Charlie Brehob

April 16th: Boat Preparation

Race meetings start at 7pm at SPORT BOWL, 3900 S US 31, 788-0878. Sport Bowl is located about one mile north of I-465 on the South side of town. Exit 2A heading towards town from I-465. Its on the West side of East Street (that's US 31) directly across from the Ford dealership. Race meetings are informative and fun. Please come.

Spring Series: The competitors meeting and race management seminar will be held on Wednesday evening April 20th at 7pm in the upper shelter at the Club. Spring Sunday Series begins April 24th...first flag 1:30pm. Wednesday Spring Series begins April 27th with the first warning signal at 6:50pm. If you haven't given me the dates you'd like to run a series race or do safety, you have until the next race meeting on March 15th. After that date, assignments will be made for everyone else who raced last year and will be published in the April issue of the telltales.

If you're not into racing but would like to get involved, I'm looking for someone to handle the Wednesday after-racing “feeding frenzy.” Basically, it’s just keeping the fridge stocked with hot dogs, condiments, and other goodies to be devoured after racing on Wednesdays. If interested in helping out, let me know.

Regattas: The first Regatta of the year will be the Mayor’s Cup Regatta on May 21st and 22rd.

Smooth Sailing......

Remember, all we wanna do is have some fun!!

Phil Tate sailing in the Finn Class finished 15th out of 26 boats. Phil was having trouble with boat not going the right way up the course. But did get a 6th & 8th in light wind. He also missed out going to the World Championships.

OCR ~ Miami, January 23 -28, 2005, the sailors in this event were a who's ~ who from the past Olympic games...with heavy air Monday and light, shifty mid-week, also rain on Friday.

Something To Think About
I hope that through what I am doing at the moment, through being determined about the goal, can show people that things can be possible. It doesn't always go the your way, but it can be possible. ~ Ellen MacArthur

Q ~ What is the origin of the term "as the crow flies"?
A ~ The term "as the crow flies" came from British coastal vessels that customarily carried a cage of crows. Crows detest large expanses of water and head, as straight as a crow flies, towards the nearest land if released at sea...very useful if you were unsure of the nearest land when sailing in foggy waters before the days of radar. The lookout perch on sailing vessels thus became as the crow's nest.

I receive calls weekly from members on the wet slip wait list asking if they are going to get a slip this summer. Our Harbormaster, Bob Hickok, maintains the wet slip wait list. Bob will not know how many wet slips are available until Membership (me) gets him a final headcount of membership renewals and drops.

    Jim & Carol Dolder

Both Carol’s and my beginnings with floating vessels began with ski boats for Carol...skiing with her family on weekend outings and a little fishing boat with my grandfather or uncle for me. I gradually was able to water ski behind my Minnesota uncle’s boat, while Carol did the same at Cataract Lake. She rammed the boat into the dock on a “very windy” day, she says, and had the fiberglass repaired and her dad never knew it. Pretty slick chick.

I married her in ’74. We did some canoeing, as well as slalom water skiing. Then a group of guys, air traffic controllers, led by Jeff Ganiere (former ECSC Harbormaster), built six Sharpies. We bought one and promptly ran it aground on the rocks at the north end—the causeway. It was a flat-bottom, center-board, cat-ketch. No foresail to pull around, just tack whenever you felt like it. The plywood hull was coated in fiberglass with a sassafras deck with mahogany gunnels. Beautiful. But it was still a daysailer that could be sunk—floating right at the gunnels. Not a good secure feeling when the wind piped up. Then, my good friend, Steve Pithoud asked if I would be interested in buying half a Chrysler 22. Our buddy, Bob Jolly, had owned it and moved out of town. I jumped on the chance...even though I didn’t have any money or much of a job (sort of a freelance handyman at the time). Got a better job and a loan and paid Steve and the Credit Union and joined ECSC in 1993 as a genuine family member. We’ve never regretted it.

We enjoyed that old Chrysler...a centerboard sloop. More often racing on Wednesday evenings and socializing on the weekends...anchoring out in one of the coves. How relaxing. It was good until about 5am when the fishermen buzz down channel in search of the elusive fish or a glimpse of the scantily clad First Mate. Proudest moment: We took the Chrysler to Lake Michigan and sailed under the Mackinac bridge. Sailed around Mackinac Island and swam in Lake Huron.

We bought a Merit 25 a couple of years ago and crewed on our sister ship, “Parrot Head,” belonging to our good friend Ralph Merriman. She’s a fin keel fastassumbitch, like a J-24. Had a blast. We were pretty scared at first of flying such a big sail (a spinnaker). We’d heard about broaching and Ralph filling his cabin up with water on such an occasion...with Bruce Cameron at the helm as I recall the story. We eventually found the spinnaker to be a really fun sail and are now disappointed when we can’t fly it (no wind). We spent a week on the Merit last summer and it’s definitely not a “cruising” boat. I suspect that it’s more of a cruising boat than a J-24, but…it’s fine for a weekend.

The future: Sail and race the Merit this summer with you incredibly diverse, wonderful fellow sailors and then we hope to sell up and sail down in Florida. We think a 32-36 foot sloop, something so we don’t run aground every 20 minutes, but could perform in a seaway also. Our eventual plans (this is dangerous, isn’t it?) hope to include an adventure up the ICW on the Atlantic side and have a floating vacation destination for those of you nuts enough to sail with us.

    That’s about it.

    Aloha and fair winds, mates….

    Who We Are
IUPUI Sailing is a member of the Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association (MCSA). We compete regularly with other colleges in the Midwest such as Michigan, Northwestern, and Notre Dame. There are approximately twenty-five different colleges and universities in the Midwest that belong to the MCSA. These schools claim over 3000 individual members and own over 325 boats. Geographically, the MCSA ranges from western Pennsylvania to between Missouri and Minnesota and from Kentucky north into Canada.

    Things We Did This Month
Every year, IUPUI members travel to Chicago in the dead of winter for the annual Chicago Strictly Sail boat show at Navy Pier. This show is usually the weekend before the annual Midwest Sailing Association (MCSA) Winter Meetings where about 25 college sailing teams and about 150 sailors get together from all over the Midwest.

This year, somehow both were scheduled on the same weekend!!!!! I don't know if this was on purpose or not. Midwinter Meetings were only on Saturday and Strictly Sail was Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of the February 5/6 weekend.

    Fundraiser
IUPUI members are planning a fundraising boat washing event. We want to offer people the chance to have their boats washed and waxed. Bruce Cameron offered to move boats around the Club for us so that people wouldn't have to be there to have their boats washed.

Treat yourself this spring to some time off...let us prep your boat for you….under the watchful eye of Club member Bruce (who can also further detail your boat and even launch it for you).

Please contact me for specifics (496-8041 or jsstorer@iupui.edu).

    Communication
    Evan Williams

This past year, I've been accumulating E-Mail addresses of ECSC members...at first for the purpose of notification when the Webtales has been posted and is ready for viewing. Lately, though, we've used this method of communication for other notices to our Club members...dues deadlines, skating events, race meeting, etc.

My goal is to just send messages for the occasional "important" announcements...and have currently been sending messages about twice a month.

As it turns out, of our 272 club members, we have E-Mail addresses for 214! I'm 58 people short of 100%. If you haven't been getting these notifications, you're probably one of those 58 (or not a member). Send me your E-Mail address if you'd like to start receiving the occasional important Club announcements (Evan@EvanWilliams.us).

Plus, you do not have to be a Club member to be on this distribution....
