COMMODORE

B dock is in and looking great. A big thanks to Kenny and crew for putting it all together.

The weather sure has been cooperating with us lately. Here's hoping it continues. As activity starts to pick up around the Club with all those Spring cleaning chores, please observe a few of the Club's DO's and DO NOT's (not necessarily in the order of importance):

1. DO watch your speed coming down the hill to the main Club grounds. We want everyone to survive at least the first few weeks.

2. DO remember to lock the front gate after dusk.

3. DO NOT throw rocks or sand. Dings in boats are hard to polish off.

4. DO help others in need and DO bring your cameras to capture those interesting ramp incidences.

5. DO NOT throw trash all over the grounds. Bob Bodish WILL find you.

6. DO put your membership decals on your boat and trailer.

7. DO promise to think about racing this year.

8. DO attend more social activities.

9. DO be nice and smile a lot and say HI to everyone.

10. DO sail more this year.

If you're an internet junkie or even if you're not, check out the Club's home page at www.ecsail.org. A lot of Club information is out there. Everything from information on our hosting the FINN North America Championship on June 2-4 to racing schedules and assignments to social activities, membership information, and more can be found.

One final note. The Board is currently working at firming up an affiliation with the IUPUI Sailing Club. We feel that this will be good for promoting ECSC in the community. The IUPUI students will mainly participate in the racing series held throughout the year.

HARBORMASTER

Hello ECSC Sailors. The first order of business is begging. We need another refrigerator at the Club! It turns out that it’s a real pain in the butt to walk up to the shelter to get the hotdogs and stuff for Wednesday night sailing. I’ve had to do that job. So, if any one has an older frig they are thinking about replacing, think about us poor, lonely, under fed, under exercised sailors first.

I just about have the wet slips allocated and the dry slips have been assigned. Please get your boat in its proper location by June 1st. I will have a list of dock and dry slip positions in the Racing Results window box. This list will be displayed throughout the year in a new window that will be a part of the new pavilion I plan to build this Spring. Members that do not move their boats by this time will have their boats moved by me. I don’t play. Do not lock your trailer! I will remove your lock with my brand new bolt cutters. If you have not put your boat in its assigned wet slip by June 1st, you will find your boat up by the wood line of our parking lot.

The reason for this tough guy attitude is that I have made a few changes for the good of all and your cooperation will make this season much less stressful for all parties concerned. I really don’t want to be the bad guy, but I will do my job. And, no matter what anybody says, it’s still easier than the Racing Chairman’s position!

Kenny Chapman, Harbormaster

RACING

Spring is here and we’re finally ready to start the new season. Remember to check your dates for Race Committee and Safety Duty. If you have a conflict. please find someone to switch dates with and mark the schedule on the bulletin board out at the Club so we know of the change. The Club’s old 386 computer that is used to score all of our races has finally bit the dust. If anyone has a computer that they would like to donate to the Club, please give me a call.

Also, the Indianapolis Sailing Club Highlander Fleet has challenged the Eagle Creek Sailing Club Highlander Fleet to a Regatta Challenge Series. The series will consist of four regattas: two at ISC and two at ECSC. Sailors from both Clubs gathered on neutral ground at Smees Place Bar and Grill to hammer out the details. Each Club will score points based on how its sailors place in each regatta. The points will be totaled at the end of the year and a traveling trophy will be presented to the sail club with the most points. This series will provide competition between the two Clubs with the winner gaining bragging rights for one year...and the trophy!

FINN CHAMPIONSHIPS

It’s time to let the good news out!

On June 1-4, ECSC will host the Olympic Finn Class North American Championships. This is the first time that an Olympic Class racing championship will be held on Eagle Ocean. There will be up to 30 Olympic Class sailors using our Club and Lake. Watch for local, national, and even international publicity from this. At this time, I wish to thank the over 20 Club volunteers who have come forward to help with this event.

All ECSC members are invited to the dinner with the Finn Sailors at our Shelter house, Saturday night, June 2nd. Cost $12 per member and must RSVP and prepay by May 15th.

ECSC / Coca-Cola Classic Mayor’s Cup

The water's up and so is the temperature. That can only mean that it's that regatta time of year again. Finally! Kick-off the season with us at the 2001 ECSC / Coca-Cola Classic Mayor’s Cup. Shake off those winter cobwebs, and enjoy two days of racing, camaraderie, and food. There's even talk of maybe bringing in Karaoke for post dinner entertainment.

The Mayor’s Cup is a week later this year than usual (June 9/10), so don't get fooled and show up the week before; unless you're bringing a Finn to the Wayne's World Regatta (Finn Nationals that is). Wayne, I'll bill you for the advertising space later.

Non-racing members are, of course, always welcome to attend both the dinner and the party. But your registration form must be received by May 26th for meals only; along with $10 per meal. A schedule of events, the registration form, and the liability release are also included in this issue of Telltales.

We are looking forward to seeing you there.

LADIES RACING

A planning session for this Summer’s LADIES DAYS will be held at El Rodeo Restaurant (2606 High School Road) on Thursday, May 10th at 6:30pm.

Please bring your personal calendars...and your ideas to keep this program great and more fun.

Hope to see you there.

MEMBERSHIP

Please welcome two new members and their families to the 2001 sailing season:

Richard & Sandy Graef and their children RJ and Austin. They sail a Hunter 26 and a Windsurfer.

James & Leslie Rudolph. They enjoy sailing their Catalina Capri 18 footer.

A few years ago, the Board of Directors conducted a study on how to bring younger blood into ECSC (the average age of our Club members in 1992 was approximately 40 years old). As a result, changes were made to encourage sailors under the age of thirty to join.

Nine years later, the average age is now 38. Please try to think of someone else that might benefit from our initiation fee payment plan.

Enjoy your sailing ventures !

SOCIAL

BRUNCH ANYONE??

The ECSC Mother’s Day brunch will be on Sunday, May 13th. Please plan to be there no later than 11:30 a.m. because that’s when we will kick off the first social event of the season. Once again it will be hosted by Bill Harrington. All of our brunches and most of our social dinner functions are pitch-ins. The Club provides the main course along with the beverages. Everyone else brings a favorite side dish that will sufficiently feed at least six people. The main dish for our brunches is usually scrambled eggs with sausage and/or bacon along with whatever else the social chairperson for the function decides upon. For new and old members alike, this is a great opportunity to get acquainted with your fellow Club members.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Barb Muelen for all of her help a few weekends ago. Barb cleaned out our social refrigerator one Saturday after some soda had exploded in it over the winter months. Thanks, Barb, for your Mr. Clean routine on the fridge, it looks great!!

Our Memorial Day cook-out, hosted by Jack and Karen Hale will be held on Monday, May 28th and will begin at 5:00 p.m. This event is a great way to finish up our first summer holiday weekend. Roger Black is hosting the Father’s Day brunch in June and is looking for help. Please give Roger or me a call if you are interested. We need your help to make all of our social events a success.

TAILER’S TIPS & TALES

Welcome to the insanely stupid, yet marginally informational edition of Tailer’s Tips and Tales. Now, some of you new readers may ask; who is this pinhead Tailer and how did he get this extremely sensitive, top secret, run amuck, super fun, highly paid, didn’t even need 12th grade English class, job. Well, the fact is, Evan pays me to write this finely feathered article. He pays me a lot! In fact, he pays me more than Richard White gets for cleaning the bathrooms. Heck, he pays better than the Commodore gets. Actually, Richard gets more than that poor guy gets. Heck, he pays better than most of the other papers I write for, but he always pays. I just don’t know how he can afford it (He must be on the take).

By the way Richard, next time you’re in the Men’s club, do you think you could slap a little steel wool on the stainless steel splash guard next to the urinal? This could be done when you are in there with a bucket of bleach water mopping the floor each week.

Any one of the members of this Club can write this article. The sooner the better, because I’m probably going to get fired after that tale. Hey, N0 GUTS NO GLORY! That’s the way it works around here. You get some good complaints or even some legitimate stories, and that evil publisher Evan prints them. What are they going to do...fire him? Well, if they do, then you will know what happened (His lovely and extremely sexy wife proofreads and adjusts all the grammatically incorrect stuff anyway).

On to the Tips:

#1 Never dump the Porta-Potti directly into the lake in order to keep the E-coli bacteria to a minimum.

#2 When skinny dipping (which is highly illegal in Georgia and many parts of Kentucky and Indiana), never do the touchy feely stuff. Anyone caught staring at anyone, must pull anchor and leave immediately. Those are the rules.

#3 Purchase a chair for the CHAIR PARTIES that just spring up in the parking lot from time to time.

#4 If you don’t know someone at the Club, introduce yourself. You may be swimming with them later.

#5 Find out who that damn Tailer guy is.

The full moons for 2001 are: 5/9, 6/5, 7/5 (now that's a party), 8/4, 9/2, 10/2, 11/1, & 11/30. Blue moon, 12/14 (too cold).

This is from a fishing source, sailors don't seem to know this sort of thing like us red necks, but they sure as heck like to look at them.
