Warm weather is upon us! My boat is happy and smiling because she was launched yesterday. It always amazes me how much happier a boat looks in the water. Is yours in the water yet? If not, remember you can always do the last minute project while she floats. So, splash her bottom-sides in the water and take advantage of the great spring weather we have been having.

Last month I missed my article deadline as RJ, Austin, and I spent about 12 days in the BVI on a Beneteau 393. We had a great trip full of sailing and windsurfing. The Willy T was visited more than once (yes...there was even jumping off the top deck). North Sound (both Leverick Bay and Bitter End) were conquered by the Graef boys. Ivan’s and Soggy Dollar had their painkiller supply lightened considerably. The ECSC Sailing club hat that we hung 2 years ago still hangs proudly in Foxy’s. The bubbly pool was bubbling. Cooper Island Beach club has been renovated and has new owners since our last visit and was even nicer than we remembered. The full-moon party at Trellis was great. We stumbled on Michael Bean's show at Marina Cay. . . What a great show! We even ran into Captain Tony Hubbard on the Ferry back to the USVI (Tony was sailing in the BVI Spring Regatta). All in all, it was a fantastic trip.

Now back to our beloved Eagle Ocean. The Club is in great shape due to the work of the volunteers who helped out in the spring work parties: Ralph (our Harbor Master), and Bob (our hard-working groundskeeper). If you see Ralph or Bob, thank them for their hard work.

ECSC is one of the true gems of Indiana. It is your Club. Come out and race on Wednesdays, weekends, or for our special regattas. Attend our social events – the food and camaraderie are always great. Bring your kids out for our junior sailing events. Load up some sleeping bags, snacks, beverages, and some friends or family, and anchor out for the night. Or, just grab a book on a beautiful, sunny spring day, have a seat in the cockpit of your boat and do very little.

Another great sailing season is upon us and I can’t wait!!!

All of our 2010 ECSC Social Event times and dates are posted on the ECSC website.

As we Kick Off 2010 Social events, I want to thank my hosts for the Work Day Party...Jim and Carol Dolder. They know how to put a breakfast together, great coffee, cream filled donuts, and the best OJ ever. Our task was to clean and organize the kitchen. We moved everything out of the kitchen, cleaned each shelf, and reorganized the layout bit by bit with the help of Jane Schmidt and Jim Dolder.

Left: Another hook-ring game located front & ccenter!

Ralph Merriman cooked the bratwurst along with all the tail-gate trimmings. All in all, we had great weather, great friends, great stories, and a great turn out. Many thanks to everyone...we kicked off the new ECSC Sailing / Socializing Season with great aplomb.

For this May 2010, Bill Harrington and crew will be again hosting Mother's Day Brunch (May 9th at 11:30am). Being out of the country last month, he has kept us posted via E-Mail. He is prepared to be at the Club despite a little volcano ash in the sky while on vacation in England. Hopefully, he'll have a few interesting stories to share. So, ask him how the trip went. Plus, do not forget your special brunch dish to complement the scrambled eggs and sausage.

Then, later on in the month, John and Joy Gilmor will be hosting the Memorial Day Cook Out. They will be using their Boathouse chefs again. Oh, what a spread they made last year. Do not miss this one. They even complemented the event with a few choice beverages. They do a great job. That date is Monday, May 31st at 3:30pm. Remember, we moved the time up to 3:30pm so that everyone can get to work the next day ...including the hosts. Again, bring your favorite dish to share with all.

I am down to one event that needs a leading host...Labor Day, September 6th. First come first served. The volunteering host and their crew earn Work Credits. Any ECSC member and their team can earn up to a total 15 credits for this event. I have at my disposal a fantastic Smoker and Crew tentatively reserved for that event. I need a host.

Contact me TODAY at 317-502-8080 or chaunceyolin@yahoo.com.

Oh, one more event that we will be giving support is the Mayor's Cup. We are expecting a few more boats this year. So, that Friday before the Mayor's Cup, May 14th, be at the Club around 7pm to greet the best people you will ever get to know...or be square. There is not a sailor without a great story to share with their comrades. We all have one. So join us Friday, May 14th. Refreshments will be served.

Racing

Ahoy Eagle Creekers, the racing season has officially begun with last Sunday’s rainy weather and obviously canceled Super Sunday races. I must admit, the RC Chauncey Olin was a lot of fun as he, Dr. Bob, and I were on hand just in case we got a break in the weather. We didn’t get a break, but we did share a few rums. This is how it goes sometimes...but I foresee much better times ahead. We have 49 series race dates planned so far for the season - not counting the Mayor’s Cup, ECSC, New Member Regatta, Two Ladies Racing events, Wayne’s 5 for 5, Gov’s Cup, Ned Hornback, and the Day-after-Thanksgiving race. Sounds busy...I’m hoping you are going to like busy.

Left: Tony in the BVI

Thing is, I think I have something for everyone this year...especially those sailors who don’t race much. Just consider it cruising practice! The Bimini series is for you! Just think about it...when you are up on the Great Lakes or chartering down in Florida just gunk holing, you don’t want to be wasting time trying to get your boat to the next destination. You need cruising practice. The Single Hander Series is another great series to practice your seamanship skills. How many times have you been the one to get stuck steering the boat while your crew sleeps below (or if they are disabled)? This is another great practice series. You only need yourself and your trusty boat for this series.

I really would like to see more smaller cruising boats out this year. That’s where I started and it was the biggest fleet back in the early nineties. I am going Old School with this racing program and I want Blue Fleet back into the mix. Those Precisions, Catalinas, Hunters, Lagunas, O’days, San Juan 21s, Cal 21s, and Compacs are so easy to sail and it really is fun to sail with or against your fellow members here at good old Eagle Ocean.

Right: Austin and Commodore Rick in the BVI

Also, I split up the fleets so Blue fleet will have a chance to blossom...but it just won’t happen unless you get to talking this up with your buddies at the club and get out there on your beloved boat. Same goes for all Fleets. White fleet has a better range of boats that can be competitive against each other and Portsmouth (Green fleet) needs to fireplug its fleet also.

Regattas are mostly all set and ready to launch, for the most part. I do need a few more hardy souls to help Rich Fox with Safety Duty on the Hornback. Dr. Bob and I still need about 4 more people to help with recording finishes and pontoon/safety boat drivers for the upcoming Mayor's Cup. I can reward you with dinner, work credits, and a race committee hat for your work. I will be posting Regatta Directors and Race Committee Officers for all of our upcoming Regattas. So, if anyone ever wants to earn some credits, this is an on-going opportunity to do so. Call me for more details (295-0146).

I heard old Tailer (Bailer’s cousin twelfth removed) is back in town and will be starting the chair parties back up on various dates. So, don’t forget to pack your chair when coming out to the Club.

Oh, and get there early....
