Our 2008 sailing season has effectively ended…usually signaled by our Final Bash and our Day-After-Thanksgiving Regatta. Now, please understand this does not mean ALL Club activity ceases. Our new Committee Heads are now planning for next year’s activities…building upon the successes of this year’s events. We had innovations by Commodore Tim and luckily plenty of water. Additionally, we now start our cold-weather activities like ice-skating in our harbor…with bonfires on shore.

Much thanks to our outgoing leaders for the time and effort they put forth. As you well know, this is a volunteer Club…well, excepting for our on-site resident Bob Bodish who keeps our Club well maintained. And, much thanks to the members who volunteered for Committee Heads this coming year.

Club Stats
Memberships 244
Slip Waiting List 40 (32 Passed)
Wet Slips 166 plus 10 temp
Water Level 786.94 (790 Normal)
Lake Acreage 1,360 Total (850 south end)
I am honored and humbled to be your Commodore this next year. It is my hope and goal to maintain our Club in the same fashion that has been such a success over the decades. Our racing program has few peers. Our social events are numerous and fun. Eagle Creek Sailing Club has more sailboats in the water than most other clubs in the Midwest. I've observed numerous other sailing clubs while following my kids in their youth regattas…ours is one of the largest and most fun.

Our new Board of Directors just finished our annual budgeting meeting. We all know the hard times ahead for our economy, and as such, have once again maintained the level of our dues and slip fees. We also are taking steps for cost savings. It's a fine balance…we must maintain the events and activities that made us great, yet keep the costs down.

I can assure you, we have great sailors running our Club and we will keep our flags high and full during this economic drought!

Lastly, any or all of our members are encouraged to contact me or our other board member with ideas or comments regarding established or new Club events.

I am in the process of setting up the social calendar for 2009 for everyone to enjoy! I will be posting a schedule for the upcoming year in the next edition.

Call me if you want to host one of the above social events for the upcoming 2009 sailing season. I already have the 4th of July booked. So, if you are interested in volunteering AND earning work credits for next year's dues, call me ASAP and we will put you to work (317-502-8080 or chaunceyolin atyahoo.com).

Harbormaster
Ralph Merriman

Greetings to all Club members.

I will be the Harbormaster next year. I've been Harbormaster is the past and am looking forward to doing it again.

Anyone who is interested in doing any work at the Club, please E-Mail me (rmerriman502 atcomcastdotnet).

We will have our usual spring work party, and with the repairs to the mud slide, there may be additional work that Club members will be able to help with.

Also, boat inventory for winter storage will be taken sometime after December 10th. If your boat is stored at the Club, please assure you have a sticker or your name on your trailer and boat. If this is not displayed on yur trailer/boat, it makes inventory very rough.

That is it for now....

Happy Holidays to all...from Christy and me.

Chili Cookoff
Pat & Rich Killen

For the second year in a row we had unseasonably warm weather for this event. It didn’t seem to bother the crowd as people socialized and were very diligent in their tasting and casting of ballots.

We had 13 entries this year and they all were very different and delicious.

The winners were:

1st place – Bruce Berner
2nd place – Bernie Wilkins
3rd place – Cheryl Roberts Most Unusual – Janet Hickock
Presentation – Julie Kamenetzky

We would like to thank Roger Knapp for setting up the electrical and Erika Williams for the music. Special thanks to our committee, Jane Schmidt and Kristin and Scott Hutchison.<>P>

Racing

Congrats to all of our ECSC sailors who competed in the 2008 Racing Season!! The top finishers in the various fleets were given awards at the Final Bash. Kudos to the finishers, as well as to Nick Marson who has been (and will be) our official scorekeeper. Of course, none of this would be possible without the dedicated service of our own members who have volunteered their valuable time and energy.

Racing’s most prestigious award, “Sailor of the Year,” was awarded most appropriately to Tim Hollingsworth. Tim’s wealth of experience and knowledge in boat handling, tactics, and racing rules, as well as his willingness to encourage and coach crew make him a deadly weapon on any boat! In addition, Tim is simply a whole lot of fun…

Right: Tim with his "Sailor of the Year" trophy

Rob and I would like to have an opportunity to meet, greet, and create goals for the 2009 Racing Season. Racers and non-racers alike, please join us for an informal meeting in January...time and place TBA.

Our “After-Thanksgiving Regatta” was held Friday, November 28th. It was a great day for sailing, sunny with wind!! We had 7 boats on the water with lots of people. Results were:

Dr. Bob - Overall Winner
John Gilmor - Worst Start, Best Finish
George Alyea - Best Start, Worst Finish

Chili & Clam Chowder made the after-race festivities...provided by John & Joy from the Boathouse Grill.

One last note, I will make arrangements for those racing finalists who were not at the Final Bash to pick up their awards.

Bailer's Tips & More
The Bailer

Bailer, I need help!

I am new to the sailing world, not to mention according to my girlfriend, I am a fashion idiot. Somehow she does not understand that choosing the correct gear for sailing does not have anything to do with fashion.

I need to buy some clothes, a suit even, but what do I do?

H. Waterpants

Right: Hornback Regatta

Mr. H. Waterpants

You have written the wrong newsletter for fashion advice, but we will do our best.

This one guy did a study which pretty much correlated tie width to the Dow Jones Industrial Average...i.e., thinner when down, thicker when up.

Obviously, in the show Mad Men (it’s a show that has won some awards recently and has nothing to do with sailing), they were in a thin period as evidenced by Kennedy, etc.

Jimmy Carter was a "belly warmer" period.

Median tie-width throughout history is about 3.25".

If you buy a tie in a conservative pattern that is silk and is 3.25" wide, you can wear it about twenty years and no one will say anything.

Lapel and cuff width in male clothing changes a lot.

Left: Hornback Regatta

But, "changes a lot" in male fashion pales in comparison to the violent swings in female fashion...where stuff is designed with planned obsolescence in mind (Hemlines are not a good indicator a recent study shows).

Male Tuxes change a lot I have noticed...you can't get away with a tux from five years ago. But then again, who really cares? Well, Tailer does for one! He is always picking on other people's get ups. He just laughs and laughs if he discovers just one minor fashion faux paux. Pay no mind to this line of thinking...a person is not made of clothes. He or she is made of character.

We had to gather the entire fashion team from the Telltales editorial staff for this advice and hope you found it helpful. In other words, just let your girlfriend take you shopping. Also, I think that you should use your high-water pants to get your boat out of the water, and do not ever believe anything Tailer tells you about me. He lies...and believe you me he is in cahoots with some of the local pirates to create trouble! Who is Tailer? He is the guy walking around with the white poofy pirate shirt and the Scottish Kilt. kinda odd sailing attire in my book, but also in the intro to my book is the phrase ”so it goes.”

Hope you found this helpful....

Sail on, Sail on....

Membership
Jane Schmidt

I'm Jane Schmidt, your ECSC Membership Chairman for 2009. A big thanks to Pete Combs and Rich Fox for all the knowledge they have shared with me.

First and foremost, please keep your 2008 keys. The Board recently voted that we will not be issuing new keys this coming year. We will keep all locks the same with the exception of the Sail School Loft. This will be re-cored and you will need to request a new key when you send in your dues.

Right: Jim enjoying a sail

Your 2009 Annual Dues and Fees Statement will be mailed out in mid-January and will be due on Saturday, February 28, 2009. It will be considered late if not post marked by 2/28/09. If you do not receive your statement by February 1st, please send a message to me at: ecsc_membership atyahoo.com or call me at 317-575-9837. If you have had an address change in 2008 and did not notify Pete Combs of this change, please get the new address to me by January 1st.

If you have earned work credits this year, the committee heads will be getting that information to me by January 1st and this information will be included with your Dues and Fees Statement in mid-January.

NEW MEMBERS - We have plans to do some events this next sailing season to bring new members together. More about that in future Telltales. We welcomed two new members in the last month.

Fritz and Susy Lay are returning members, living in Indianapolis and sailing a San Juan 21.

John and Elfi Cicak are from Indianapolis and sailing a Hunter 216.

This brings us to the fact that we have welcomed 25 new members in 2008. Our membership breaks out as follows (and thanks to Pete for compiling this for us):

142 - Family
85 - Regular
11 - Social
3 - Lake Association
2 - Legacy
1 - Race Fellow

...for a total of 244 members as of 11/14/08

Left: Mikey in the Hornback

WINTER STORAGE FEE - If your boat is on Club Property in December, you will receive an invoice for $60 for Winter Storage along with your Annual Dues/Fees Statement. Boats without stickers that cannot be identified may be tagged as abandoned and removed from Club property. If you need the round identifying sticker for your boat or trailer, please submit your request to me.

As always, help keep our Club property, boats, and trailers secure. If you are the last person leaving the Club in the evening, please lock the gate behind you with your 2008 key which will also be good for all of 2009.
