COMMODORE

In my opening article in the November 2001 Telltales, I wrote that Pauline and I joined the Club in the vicinity of 1974 – 1975.  Some 26 – 27 years later, I/we finally became front-page news as your Commodore.

Now, in what sometimes seems an eternity and at other times seems to be a mere moment, my term as Commodore is over.  Hopefully, I have assisted the Club in some small way to become better.  I have enjoyed the experience and it has helped me learn and grow as a person.

A hearty thank you to the twenty-four board members that have assisted me in making this yet another great year at the Club.  Among these twenty-four, your Officers and Committee Chairs (Vice-Commodore - Max Gray, Treasurer - Tom Moore, Secretary - Dave Fort, Harbormaster - Christy Merriman and Rick Sprowl, Membership - Mike Kaschak and George Alyea, Publicity - Evan Williams, Racing – Wayne Myers and Mark Mallaby, Safety/Education – Bob Hickok, and Social – Edna Sprowl) have all given countless hours in their positions to better our Club.

In addition to these twenty-four, are the countless volunteers that have assisted with work parties, socials, and regattas.

Without all of your help and support, this past year would surely have been an eternity.

In November, at the Final Bash, you will elect new board members to fill vacancies.  Ballots and reservation forms will be addressed somewhere in this issue.  From these board members, your next Commodore, Max Gray, will select the Officers and Committee chairs. I know that you will give Max and his board the same assistance and support you have given me to yet improve our Club further.

As we enter the closing days of the season, be mindful of the water level.  As I mentioned last month, the Eagle Creek water gods can lower our bathtub and leave you in the mud.  Follow the Harbormasters’ instructions governing winter boat-parking storage and the removal of trailers from the Farm.

Plan to attend the Hornback Regatta/Chili Cook off this month and the Final Bash in November.

As I write this article, Mark and Kelly Mallaby are considering plans to move to San Diego.  If these plans become final, thank you for all of your hard work and contributions to the Club.  I may or may not miss Mark, but I surely will miss Kelly’s bread pudding.

Until the snow falls – Keep sailing !!

See you either on the water or at one of the upcoming final events.

Larry January, Commodore

Water Level

Eagle Ocean’s water level has been good to us this year despite near drought conditions, but it’s starting to drop.  At this writing, we’re at 789.5 feet above sea level (about a half foot below summer pool).  The level was down over a foot before this last storm rolled through.

A great web site to visit for lake levels is http://in.waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?site_no=03353450.

Sail Loft Update

We’ve installed twenty 10-inch PVC tubes in a rack in the sail loft for sail storage for the beach sailors.  End caps will be installed soon.  Also, look for shelves to store dry boxes, and pegs to hang life jackets etc.

Winter Parking

It’s that time of year again.  Trailers are starting to migrate back from the farm to “reserve” winter parking spots. Please remember that the “Car Corral” (both sides of the rope) is off limits until after the Hornback/Chili Cookoff.

INDY HIGHLANDER CUP

Below are the results for the 3rd Race of the Indy Highlander Cup.  On page 7 are the results of the 4th and final race of this series.  After four races and being outnumbered in boats 22-20, the Indianapolis Sailing Club (at Geist) wins this Cup 146-110 for the second straight year.  Congratulations to ISC...and also all of our ECSC members/racers who participated.  This series greatly helps strengthen our relations with ISC.

RACING

The 5 for 5 Regatta had a turnout of 13 skippers and crews all trying to remember which way to turn with the gates on the race course.  All 5 races were under the leadership of Capt. Leeman and 1st Mate Judy Breitzke.  If you missed this race, well sorry about that.  “A job well done” to this 1st class race committee.  The winners are:

SPORTSMANSHIP AND THE RULES

Competitors in the sport of sailing are governed by a body of rules that they are expected to follow and enforce.  A fundamental principle of sportsmanship is that when competitors break a rule, they will promptly take a penalty or retire. (RRS)

CHILI COOKOFF

Hello ECSC members!

As the season is winding down, the fun is not over by a long shot.

The last social event held on the Club grounds is being constructed and planned to be GREAT!  I'm talking about the Hornback Chili Cookoff to be held in mid October.

The theme this year will be changed a bit, to portray a southwest likeness.  But not to worry, because as you all know, everyone enjoys this event and will have some of the best chili this side of Mexico.

There will be real nice prizes for the best chili, so bring your pot of chili and pitch in.  The voting for the best chili will be done by all members and guests present...with special lighting and larger numbers for easier reading on each pot (I'm hungry already just thinking about it).

For those who can't quite handle chili, we will have hamburgers and hot dogs with all the trimmings.  Side dishes and deserts welcome also.

Plan for October 12th at 5:30pm to bring the kids...bring the whole family and guests and a big pot of chili to pitch in.  Who knows...yours might just be a winner this year.

See you all there!

Roger & Michelle Knapp

SOCIAL

Let me start by saying a big thank you to Richard and Angie White and their helpers for a great Labor Day cookout.  They did a super job making sure everyone was having a good time.

As we are drawing near to the end of the 2002 ECSC social season, I would encourage all of you to try to attend at least one of our last two events.  The Chili Cookoff is on Saturday Oct. 12th at 5:30pm...right after the Hornback Regatta.  It will be hosted by Roger and Michelle Knapp and is always a great time.  Bring your favorite pot of chili...or for those who don’t fix chili, bring a side dish or dessert.  Everyone votes for their favorite chili and prizes are awarded.  There’ll be a fire going in the fireplace, so bring your chairs, blankets, etc. and join us.

Please mark your calendars for the Final Bash, Saturday November 2nd at 6:00pm.  We will be at Celebrations again this year.  The dress code is semi-formal.  Due to the number of questions received regarding what was considered semi-formal in the past, I will try to clear things up a little.  As a general guideline, semi-formal for ladies would include a nice dress, pantsuit, cocktail dress, or a long dress.  As for the gentlemen, they could wear a suit, nice slacks and shirt with or without a jacket, or even a tuxedo if they are so inclined.  I hope you find these guidelines helpful.

For the new members there are more details for the Final Bash in this Telltales.  This is the one event in which reservations are required and we cannot accept anyone at the door without one.  So, please get your reservations in as early as possible.  Thanks to Kelly Mallaby for all her efforts going into the planning of the Final Bash.  If you would like to help Kelly please give her or me a call.

TAILER’S TIPS & TALES

Is it time to pull out your boat?  No way!  Powerful fall mojo is on its way to you, pronto.  What the heck, these days you are safer in your boat than anywhere else anyway. Get out there and watch the leaves decay.

Out here it happens on trees that are decades old.  In some cases, maybe over a hundred years old!  Lots of those are north of the 56th street causeway.  Tailer and another adventure boy (you know who you are) know where they can be found.  Get yourself a dinghy and go see them.  Late at night is the coolest when nobody else is  looking.  Don't forget to bring a powerful spotlight.  Sorry about the Geist folk's luck, but they will be watching the same mansion landscaping pass away just like last year. That is what happens when you cut down ALL of the trees.  Always a bad idea the last time that Tailer checked.  Oh well. Welcome to the Spooky Halloween episode of Tailer's Tips and Tales.  Tips for winter are in order and October has some events that deserve honorable mention.

You ladies already have your evening wear for the final bash, right?  This is the month where you should all be preparing for the Bash by forking over to the proper authorities the cash for your place at the ball.  New guys, do not miss this event.  I don't know if I can make it this year. I'll do my best because it is one of my favorite things to do. The Hornback Regatta starts and the annual Chili Cook-Off happens this month on Saturday the 12th.  If you pick this weekend to pull your boat out for the year, do not park your boat in the car corral until after the Chili Cook-Off partying is completely over.  That will screw up your karma, trust me.  Endure some more tips:

Tip #1) If you can, you should call your mother right away.  Nuff said!

Tip #2) When you lose, do not lose the lesson.

Tip #3) Old guys, share your knowledge.  It is one way to achieve immortality.

Tip #4) New guys, listen.  This is the path to being an old guy.

Tip #5) Pay attention to the temperature and give your boat one last spray-off at the pressure washer before it is too late and the water gets turned off before the first freeze.

Tip #6) Check your trailer...does it have a flat tire, or worse?!  Know now while the weather is still warm.

Tip #7) Be prepared to vote for your new board members right away.  Really great people have been nominated this year.  Do the research on them all by yourself.

Tip #8) Thank Larry January for the extra effort that he put in this year.  It did not turn out to be a hands off job this year after all, did it Larry?  All of us should be giving him a great big round of applause at the Final Bash.  How did that immortal philosopher Popeye put it? "You pays your money and you takes your chances."  I'm pretty sure that’s what he said.

Tip #9) My spies on the Board (Trouble and One-eye) tell me that C-Dock folks will be waiting for a new dock longer than they thought.  Perhaps a new paint job next year is in order.  Noting the shape that C-Dock is in, Tailer suggests whatever graffiti that you might have in mind might help.  Keep in mind that this is a family Club.  Anything is better than rust and peeling white paint/rotting wood.  Ooops, I'll bet that I'll get in trouble again for that one.  Paint away, C-Dock folks!

Tip #10) Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.  Never laugh at anyone’s dreams.  Better yourself in ways that you have thought of all by yourself.  Don't brag about it either.

Tailer, The Fall Guy

BOARD ELECTION

Each year at our Final Bash, eight members are elected by general membership ballot to replace the eight Board members whose 3-year term has expired.  This year, we might elect a few more members to the Board to replace those who have moved away or resigned.

At the September Board meeting, nominations were made to fill these positions.  They are listed below.

Please note the asterisk after some of the names.  That indicates that that person is planned to be appointed to a Club Committee or even possibly elected by the Board to an Officer position.

Also, on the left is the member’s current membership number.  It basically reflects how long the member has been in the Club.  The higher the number, the newer the member.

Ballots will be accepted at the Final Bash.  If you can’t attend this year, please contact our Club Secretary to arrange for your ballot in absentia (Dave Fort, 244-5093 or dfort@butler.edu).

FOR “SAIL”

San Juan 21 - Mama says we can get a new boat! But, we need to sell the San Juan first.  This boat is aged like a fine wine (1976 vintage) and sails really fast (a former state champion too many years ago to remember exactly when). Includes: main, jib, 130% genoa, spinnaker and pole (hardly ever used), 4hp Mariner (used frequently), porta-potti, new cushions inside, trailer with new tires and bearings, swim ladder (NO SWIMMING however), Danforth anchor, and too many other goodies to list here. You can see it in the West parking lot - upper level.  Asking $3,900. Call Jeff or Cindy Williams at 290-9960 or email jefncin650@cs.com.

1982  6.7 Meter S2 in excellent condition.  Always garaged during the winter.  It truly is a magnificent boat and in the best condition of all the S2's on Wawasee.  It sits on a Shorelander trailer which is like new and has been appraised by itself at $2,000.  The S2 has a jib, main, and a spinnaker.  I wax it regularly.  I am now 60 years old and the E-scow keeps me busy on weekends, so the S2 is ready for sale.  I must have $6,000 for the boat and trailer.  I can be reached at brando@mchsi.com or 574-457-5831.

1976 Reinell 22' Sailboat, main and 150% genoa, Honda 9.9 (needs repair), Danford anchor, new battery, bumpers, cabin and cockpit cushions, cockpit table, swim ladder, full headroom in cabin, sleeps 3 or 4, sink, alcohol stove, ice refrigerator, dining table, port-a-potty, E-Z loader tandem axle trailer, great cruising boat. Asking $3,500, call 290-8857 or 587-5096 or williamsd@tce.com

1980 Com-pac 16 includes a 1998 5HP Nissan outboard motor and Magic-Tilt trailer.  Also includes main and jib sails, cabin cushions, clock, swim ladder, and carpeted interior.  Trailers easily and sails great.  Safe boat for family use.  Located in Greenwood, IN. Contact Jim at 317-535-9345. $2,900.
