According to the calendar, we’ve officially entered into Fall. At the time of this writing, the weatherman seems to disagree. It won’t be long though before members will begin preparing their boats and the Club for the winter ahead.

As this will be my last article as your Commodore, I will soon begin preparing for the more relaxing position of Past Commodore. It has been my pleasure to be able to serve this great Club for the last several years in various capacities. I’m privileged to have worked with so many individuals who are dedicated to preserving this hidden paradise.

I’d like to thank this year’s board members who have helped make my term a “relatively” stress free year. And thanks to the Commodorable Edna Sprowl who has put up with my periods of “relative” stress while I’ve paced the floor trying to write these articles or prepare for board meetings.

Memberships 265
Slip Waiting List 65 (16 Passed)
Wet Slips 166

And, of course, thanks to the volunteers who have kept the Club in tip top shape.

When I retire at the Final Bash, please join me in welcoming Evan Williams and offer your support as he steps up to the Commodore post. I’m certain that he will do a great job.

The Final Bash will be your opportunity to vote for new board members to fill several vacancies. Look for the slate for this year’s election in this issue of the Telltales.

Cheryl Roberts

This will be my last article as Social Chair. I would like to thank everyone who hosted or assisted a host for one of the social events. It is amazing how quickly the three years have gone by and I know it is because of the wonderful people who volunteer. Thanks so much!

The weather for the Labor Day cookout was wonderful, and the turn out was great. Thanks goes to Rich and Angie White, veteran hosts for this event, and their crew – Jim and Sherry Weir and Don and Judy Birt.

Note: Pic at left from the Commodore's Dinner Dance.

Start warming up that crock pot now for the Chili Cookoff! The Chili Cookoff is immediately following the Hornback regatta on Saturday, October 8th. Again, please bring a covered dish (or crock of chili) to share. The Club will be providing lots of bowls and spoons for testing, along with burgers and hot dogs.

Please don’t forget to get registered now for the Final Bash – to be held on Saturday, November 12th at the Rathskeller downtown. Dinner, dancing, and let’s not forget the racing awards. “Uncle JuJu” will be providing music following dinner and awards.

Water Level
The water has been down and back up about one foot in September but, the waterworks usually starts to lower the levels in the fall. So, be warned of low spots in the main body and in the dock area. If you don't know those spots, please ask. Don't be caught having to dig out of your dock because the level dropped too quick.

Winter Parking
It’s that time of year again. Please remember that the Car Corral (both sides of the rope) is off limits until after the Hornback Regatta/Chili Cookoff. We will also mark “No Parking” areas with orange spray paint. If you pull your boat out early and do not intend to store it at the Club, please tear it down and take it home. We are getting very short on parking and if you leave it until the day before the boats are counted for winter storage, it makes it very difficult for Club members trying to get a spot for the winter - and they are paying a fee for that service. Boats on the Club grounds after December 1st will be charged. Also, all the trailers need to be removed from the “Farm” by November 1st.

Club Closing Work Party
The Club Closing Work Party will be on November 5th at 10am. If you want to help, come on out. Work Parties = Work Credits. Credits can also be donated to the Junior Sailing Program!

Slip Waiting List
An updated List Wait List will be listed at the bottom of this Webtales. If you see any errors, please let me know.

Power Sprayer
The sprayer will stay on as long as it’s warm enough. It’s expensive to replace, so we don’t take chances allowing it to freeze up.

Special Thanks
Thanks, Mike Gray for being my 2005 Harbormaster Assistant. Could not have done it without you! And thanks, members and directors, for allowing me to serve you as Harbormaster the last two years!

Remember, take pride in your wonderful Club!

Laser Racing at Wawasee Yacht Club
24 boats on the line in what turned out to be a no wind match, with lots of motor boat chop that made you feel like the inside of a washing machine on the rinse cycle.

Wawassee is 146 miles north on Highway 31 from Indy...a large lake with homes and cottages and many docks around the lake. Our ECSC Sailing Team unloaded Friday night late, with tent and van camping...1st race at 11am. They have a small club house with around 100 members. Sunfish, Lasers, and some big " E " machines are members’ boats. Launching is feet wet from your dolly with 24 Laser sailors from round the Midwest at the same time.

Saturday’s first race was in light to lighter winds out of the North with lots and lots of motor chop to deal with. Tyler Andrews finished 2nd, Jason Hubbard 4th, and Wayne Myers back of the pack.

Sunday’s only race was light from the South to East, no major chop. Wayne Myers finished 7th, Tyler Andrews 9th and Jason Hubbard middle of the pack.

ECSC Junior Racing
The ECSC Junior Team loaded up for two days and nights in Southern Indiana at Lake Lemon. RJ and EJ along with Evan, Rick, Wayne, Chuck Andrews, and this year our past champion Phil Tate (all pictured above). Lasers and Finns were on line September 24th & 25th.

David & Julie Bruce

Tagged by my partner in race committee crime, Joe Traub, I’m it!

My father, Larry Bruce, and I have been sailing on this lake sporadically for many years.  We started in a sixteen foot boat that neither of us understood nor did either of us have the wisdom to ask for….LESSONS.  Those were the eventful high school years with most of the sailing memories centered around afternoons drifting along with Dad.  College interrupted and not much sailing occurred for several years until around a decade ago when Dad obtained a Catalina 22.  We still didn’t know much, but the sailing was far better.

The most vivid memory of the Cat 22 was one blustery fall day.  Dad and I raised the sails and began sailing from the harbor toward the dam.  As we began a gybe north, the wind accelerated and we began spinning.  All lines went every way they weren’t supposed to go and we were both scared out of our minds.  Needless to say, we dropped sails and headed back in.  Did you know that the holes in the bottom third of a mainsail aren’t to let the wind through….ropes actually go through them for the purpose of shortening and thus depowering the main sail…we now call it reefing the main…Ah, what experience teaches us!

Fast forward to the summer of 2003.  Now that Julie (my wife), Nicole (11), Sarah (8), Joshua (7), Michael (5), and I are in Zionsville doing much more sailing with Dad, the Catalina became a bit cramped and a Hunter 260 was born.  This is where the real sailing adventures began.  With the graciousness of Tom Moore of Sailboats, Inc fame, we began understanding what sailing could be on Eagle Creek.  For Dad’s 65th birthday, I asked Rick Ahrbecker for an afternoon of lessons.  With that, we were officially off and running.  Rick helped us really understand what we could do and couldn’t do with this boat.

Since that lesson, we have begun taking the boat to multiple ports of call.  The roads and trailer have taken us to Kentucky Lake two and soon to be three times in the fall.  We have enjoyed sailing and camping in Destin, Florida twice (Choctawhatchee Bay/Henderson Beach State Park).  Lake Michigan via New Holland provided us with a great sailing experience this summer leaving me with a four centimeter souvenir on my forehead…..those blasted trailer winch handles!  Lake Monroe coves have seen a lot of swimming and we look forward to the destinations of next year!

With all the trailering, though, our best memories have been built on the back of the Wednesday nights I have set aside for my kids and dad to spend with my Eagle Creek family.  We were encouraged in the Telltales to come and race.  The “crew” and I took up the challenge in the Spring of 2004.  Since then, we’ve been regulars in the white fleet scene most Wednesdays.  If I had to guess, I imagine the kids are in it for the hotdogs – thanks Bill Harrington, but I’m in it for the time with Dad and the kids…it sure isn’t for the powerful Wednesday night winds!  Some of the best nights have been in light winds when the kids could get to swim before the races…oops..secret’s out…don’t tell the Ranger!

Well, we’re officially bitten by the bug.  It was an honor to serve on the race committee Wednesday the 16th and we look forward to becoming even more involved as the kids age.

Well, that’s about all for now…see you around the club!

Ship's Store

How It Works
Evan Williams

This is the last Webtales before the Final Bash...which doubles as our Annual Meeting for our "Corporation" in which we elect our Board members to run our Club. Eight members' 3-year terms are expiring at the Bash. For giving of their time and energy to Club, thanks goes to: Don Birt, Carole Branham, Charlie Brehob, Jim Dolder, Joyce Mallette, Cheryl Roberts, Angie White, and Evan Williams.

Three of those eight were nominated for another 3-year term...since they've volunteered to hold leadership positions again if elected: Joyce Mallette (Ship's Store), Cheryl Roberts (Treasurer), and me (Commodore).

If you can't make the Bash this year, you're encouraged to vote for the Board members anyway. Just printout this ballot and send it in as directed.

Note: Picture above right is of drawings made on the wall of a garage of one of our members. Looks like Rick Ahrbecker just might have another profession awaiting him!
