I was checking last month’s Telltales reported water level and it looks like the water has receded yet another foot in the month of September...down 4 feet from normal pool and 5 feet from the 791’ level we’re used to. Hopefully you’ve been checking for yourself, glancing at the webpage, or heeding the bulletins put out by E-Mail. If you haven’t moved your trailer yet, please remember to have your trailers removed from the upper field by October 15th. Now for some good news!

In ECSC’s 38 years of existence, it is tradition to pass the gavel of the office of Commodore in November. This time, it will be passed to the former 1988 Commodore, Tim Hollingsworth. In those twenty years, I’m sure Tim has seen a lot of changes and I’m sure he will help to bring about many more as he takes the reigns again.

I want to thank this year’s officers, committee chairs, and board members for supporting the Club and me...and helping make my term as Commodore a memorable one. Without everyone pitching in and doing their part, I would have no part to do. And thank you Lady Janet, for being such a wonderful first lady.

The Final Bash will be your opportunity to vote for new board members to fill several vacancies. Ballots will be accepted at the Final Bash. If you can't make the Bash this year, you're encouraged to vote for the Board members anyway. Just printout this Ballot and send it in as directed.

Fall’s officially here and the frost will be on the pumpkin before we realize it. Lest we get depressed that summer is over, please take a minute and consider the following:

The social season still has a couple of great events to attend. Here’s the scoop…….

THE HORNBACK CHILI COOK OFF

ECSC FINAL BASH

On Saturday, October 6th, the Club will host the Annual Hornback Chili Cook Off! Pat & Rich Killen will be turning the shelterhouse into a chili lovers heaven. Everyone is invited to bring their favorite chili entries to be judged for prizes and tasting. There will be prizes for the top entries. The Club will provide a pot of Club chili for everyone and hot dogs and hamburgers for those not wanting the chili thing.

Even if you don’t want to bring a chili, please come and help vote for the top entries and bring a side dish for sharing. The event will start at 5:30pm. It will be held regardless of whether the Hornback will be held that day due to shallow water conditions.

The last event of the year is the ECSC Final Bash on Saturday, November 3rd. This party is always a fun way to wrap up our sailing year and gather together one more time before we sit out the winter. We will have cocktails and appetizers, a full dinner buffet with dessert, and a great band for dancing and your listening pleasure.

Trailers
A very important date is looming: October 15th. That is the date ALL trailers have to be out of the trailer parking lot.

No Exceptions!

Trailers are starting to migrate from the Trailer Farm back to the Club. PLEASE be very careful about picking up your trailer. Some of the weeds have gotten pretty tall and are very “sticky.” There have also been a couple reports of bee stings – Ouch!! Although we did mow the Trailer Farm "roadways," that doesn't necessarily make it easy to grab your trailer...just easier!

Water
Most of you will have noticed (either by visiting the lake, reading Evan’s special E-Mail, or by looking at the home page of the ECSC website) that the water level in Eagle Creek Reservoir has dropped considerably from its normal of 791’. As of the day this was written, the water level had dropped 5 feet. It has rained some yesterday and today, but no rain is forecast for the next several days.

The water level is low enough that the sand/rock bar (Shown Right) on the left as you leave our bay is visible.

If you have problems concerning the Club’s ramp, the public ramp is normally steeper/deeper.

Parking
Also, remember that the Car Corral is OFF LIMITS for trailers until after the Hornback Regatta. This includes both inside and outside the ropes. We will also mark “No Parking” areas with orange spray paint.

Winter Storage
If you pulled your boat out early and do not intend to store it at the Club, please tear it down and take it home. We are getting very short on parking. If you leave it until the day before the boats are counted for winter storage, it makes things very difficult for Club members trying to get a spot at the Club for the winter. Boats on the Club grounds after December 1st will be charged.

Club Closing Work Party
November 3rd at 9:00am we'll be moving picnic tables, dinghies, sticks, maybe a few boats, and giving the Club a general cleanup. If you want to help, come on out. Work Parties = Work Credits = Fun!

Power Sprayer
The sprayer will stay on as long as it’s warm enough. It’s expensive to replace, so we don’t take chances allowing it to freeze.

Left: Our new larger beach area!

Slip Waiting List
An updated Wet-slip Wait List will be listed at the bottom of this newsletter. If you see any errors, please let me know.

Grounds
There are two areas with bright orange stripes painted on the gravel. One is to define the gin-pole area that must be kept clear so members can raise & lower their masts. The other area is to keep you from parking your boat there for the winter. It is too easy for someone to slide into that area when the ground is slick in the winter.

And, thanks to Rick Graef for his help as the Assistant HM this year. I’m sure he will provide a yeoman’s service to our Club next year as the Harbor Master.

Hornback Chili Cookoff
Pat & Rich Killen

Fall is here and it is time to dust off your chili recipes and make plans to enter the chili cookoff. The date is Saturday, October 6th, at 5:30pm. We have prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Also, prizes for Most Unusual Chili and the Best Presentation of Chili. Last year we had 15 delicious entries.

There will be music and pumpkins for the children to decorate. The Club will provide hot dogs, hamburgers, and beverages. Desserts are welcome!

Come join us for a fun, fall evening!

For those who may be interested, for planning purposes, this new on-line chart viewer looks pretty good. It's directly from NOAA and lets you view the charts on-line.

Bailer's Tips & More
The Bailer

You know being keel-hauled when done properly is not that bad!

Horrible? Yes!

However, under the tutelage of Black Sam Bellamy, the Tailer showed mercy. Sam coached Tailer on the fine art of keel-hauling. They keel-hauled me with a certain grace...like a dance...like ballet. The two worked together as if they were the winning couple on Dancing with the Stars.

Technically, it was not a true keel-hauling since they had to heel her over so far as to get the keel out of the mud...so, it was more of a gunnel-hauling. My head was out of the water the entire time watching them as they walked the length of the boat with me bum dragging in the mud and Sam barking orders to Tailer all the finding time to boast and brag about the club's future. An experience I will not soon forget!

Above: Christy, Carol, Jim, and Ralph

I learned a lot while being drug beneath/beside my boat with a ghost and a ghost's best buddy and co-conspirator. I learned that the two had known each other for a long time...even prior to the formation of our Club. I learned even under the most delicate hand, keel/gunnel hauling is low on my list of best experiences I ever had. I learned that as peaceful as our Club is, there is trouble brewing. I caught wind of it from these two characters gabbing while they were stealing my boat and gunnel-hauling me. All this has built their confidence...but by gosh for the sake and safety of the Club, I will unearth their blood on the high-seas plan.

Now, do not get me wrong. I am not an alarmist. But, if things continue the way these two (and their brethren) are conspiring, I fear the worst. Over flowing toilets, stolen bags of ice, missing contents from ice coolers, the front gate left unlocked at night, cigarette butts mashed out in the parking lot, and me prayers be with you if you have a colorful pennant flying. Color it gone!

I have been forced into hiding and had to send this message via Wi-Fi from an undisclosed Four Bucks Coffee Palace. Living as a fugitive is not that bad. It is kind of miserable, but some have it worse! So, I cannot complain. On the run, I have still managed to cobble out some tips and I suppose they shall follow:

Above: Ryan in the 5 For 5 Regatta

1. If you see Tailer, you can rest assured Bellamy is in tow or vice versa (not to mention their entourage of ghost pirates). They are here to take our Club and I am afraid poor Tailer is under their spell.

2. Tailer is not the bad man in this tragedy, but he is hanging with a rough crowd that only he can see (besides myself). Fortunately, my strong moral character has made me immune to the temptation these ghost-pirates offer.

3. Oh, the water is still low, so you may consider pulling the boat for awhile. And, I still recommend not drinking green water.

4. Cook out! This Club is one fine place to bring a future member. Lemme know if you are grilling cause I’m kinda hungry being on the run in all. I’ll be the one in the bad disguise...probably Grocho glasses and mustache (perfect for every occasion).

5. Tell Bob Bodish thanks. The guy works hard for you...not to mention he will be a good ally in the event we have to go to battle with the ghost pirates. He knows a thing or two about a thing or two...pirates be warned.

Above: John in the 5 For 5 Regatta

6. Yes, Sam Bellamy was my servant. But, he turned on me and stole my boat. If you see the Queen Anne's Revenge, challenge her! Pirates run from confrontation.

7. I just had an Australian-style burger from the grill...lots of seasoning in the beef, grilled pineapple on top, cheese, candied beets, sautéed onions, some other things, and a fried egg! Top of the line! You keep this recipe for when you grill out for our future members.

You're Welcome.....

Kind Regards and tack well.....

September brought cooler breezes, earlier sunsets, and four new members to our Club:

Paul "Skip" Kaub and his young sailors Hillary and Haley, of Noblesville, sailing Hobie Getaway.

Mark Wild of Indianapolis sailing a McGregor 26.

Steve and Sue Jones of Kokomo sailing an Interlake 18.

Jack Brainard of Carmel sailing a Ray Green Rebel.

Please extend a welcome to our new members as you see them at the Club.

ADDRESS UPDATE
If your address has changed since receiving your 2007 Annual Dues/Fees Statement in January, and if you have not informed the Membership Chair (me) of your new address and phone number, please provide me with an update by November 1st. In early November, I will be transitioning the Membership duties to a new Membership Chair. Your address update will help make sure that the new Membership Chair has your most current address so that your 2008 Annual Dues/Fees Statement is mailed correctly and not returned by the Post Office. You are responsible for keeping the Club posted of your current address and contact information.

DUES DUE FEBRUARY 28th
Take note, your 2008 Annual Dues/Fees are due no later than February 28th. Slip owners and members on the wet slip wait list are subject to lose their slip or position on the wet slip wait list if all dues and fees are not paid on time.

WINTER STORAGE FEE
I am always asked about how to pay for Winter Storage. If your boat is on Club property in December, you will receive an invoice for Winter Storage in January along with your Annual Dues/Fees Statement.

Left: Last major draught - 1991!

ROUND STICKERS FOR BOATS/TRAILERS
If you need the round orange and white stickers for your boat and trailer, please submit your request via e-mail to ecsc_membership@yahoo.com or leave a voice mail at 317-815-8599. Boats without stickers that cannot be identified may be tagged as abandoned and removed from Club property.

KEY
As the year-end approaches, if you plan to leave your boat on Club property for the Winter, check now if you have a key to the Main Gate. If you need a replacement key, they are $5 each...while supplies last.

Our Junior Sailing Goals were met this season!!

Last year at this time, I sat down and wrote out what are our goals were for 2007. Below are the results:

1: Teaching the art of sailing in small boats, single, and team racing.
YES. We had over five Saturday classes with over 45 would-be sailors.

2: Traveling around with other Club members to major US Sailing Championships along with other sailing events in the Midwest.
YES. Your Junior Sailors travel to over 15 regattas this year.

Above: Laser Sailors taking part in the 5 For 5 Regatta.

3: Working with other Clubs to help grow our ECSC Sailing Program.
YES. Some of the other Clubs are copying our program.

4: A two-week sailing camp, along with having 3 certified junior instructors and increase our junior sailors by 50%.
YES. Over 50 kids this year and we are looking at having 3 weeks next year and 70 kids.

5: Sending 1 or 2 of our juniors to the US Sailing Level 1 Instructor's Course.
YES. We had two juniors this year.

6: Increase our girl’s team by 50%.
YES. We have 3 girls now on the team.

What did we spent our money on this year?
The club bought three new Laser hulls at the beginning of the year. We did two mast deck repairs at $450 each and one new radial mast section. Also, we bought three board bags (storage for rudder, center board, and mast sheet gear), new line and other sailing items (gas, water, etc.). We paid for two instructors for the Junior Sailing Camp and also two to go for their US Sailing Instructor's Certification. We also sent nine juniors to Bay Week with six parents to help out. It’s been a busy year...

Right: John battling Erika in the 5 For 5 Regatta.

What do we need for next year?
A replacement trailer for crash boat...the wheel bearings are frozen to the axle. Also, the trailer was not made to hold this type of boat.

What are we wishing for next year?
Someone to donate a Hobie trailer that can be turned into a 3-boat trailer for our Junior Sailing Team.

“O” by the way
I will be out of town the week of October 1-7 and miss the Hornback. US Sailing/Olympic Sailing Committee is footing the bill for me to go to the Finn Olympic Trials at Newport Harbor Yacht Club in Balboa, California Where I will be the measurer. This will be my 6th time working at these events. ECSC member Phil Tate has been there for over two weeks and will be trying again for the Gold in the Finn class. Good Luck Phil....
