Second, we have received what now seems to be the annual notice that the Department of Public Works is going to lower the water level...this year by a foot. Those of you with the deep keels need to keep an eye on the water depth at the ramp. Also, remember that boat parking in the car “basin” in front of the Shelter is restricted until after the Hornback.
Where this happened the first time is hotly debated, but we do know that in 1893 in Chicago at the Columbia Exposition, the City of San Antonio had a booth where chili was sold. Because of this, Texas and Texans claim to be the official guardians of the chili receipt. The purists are adamant that there are no beans in chili. They will yield on tomatoes, onion, and garlic even though I doubt you would have found these in an old Texas chuck wagon.
While I tend to agree, I am not sure that this is true to the historic record. All meat chili is great if you have enough meat. But, indigenous people around the world have had to find substitutes for meat since that was often scarce. In the Southwest and Mexico, this could have been either beans...or even more likely, corn or hominy. Of course, you are not restricted to beef and can use any meat you like. The best chili I ever had was allegedly made with armadillo. On Saturday, October 11th, you can join in the debate. Bring your favorite chili or just come to judge at the Chili Cook Off held during the Hornback. I know some of you are going to add pasta. I am speechless.

Trailers No Exceptions! Right: Our Harbormaster at the Governor's Cup. Trailers are starting to migrate from the Trailer Farm back to the Club. PLEASE be very careful about picking up your trailer. Some of the weeds have gotten pretty tall and are very “sticky.” There have also been a couple reports of bee stings – Ouch!! Although we did mow the Trailer Farm "roadways," that doesn't necessarily make it easy to grab your trailer...just easier!
Water If you have problems concerning the Club’s ramp, the public ramp is normally steeper/deeper.

![]() Much thanks to Chris Cunningham (Right) on running the Governor's Cup Regatta...this guy sure knows how to run a regatta!! Next up, our last regatta of the year...and one of the most fun regattas: The Hornback Regatta "The Fast Start Last" The starts for these races are staggered such that the faster boats cross the start line sometimes up to 5 minutes after the first boat starts. The goal is for all the boats to finish at once...hence, whoever finishes first, wins! No waiting for PHRF results. And, there's no regatta fee...it's FREE!! This is a 2-day regatta, but hey, if you can't make it one of those days, who cares? Remember, we're out there for the thrill of racing!
Also, this regatta is great for us racers, in that our Club Social Chair organizes the Saturday night party...our annual chili cookoff. I suspect there might be music to dance by later in the evening. And, I hear the juniors are targetting this regatta in full force including camping overnight Saturday. Should be a great bonfire that night! Left: More Governor's Cup Regatta. October 11th and 12th...the NOR and Registration Forms have been posted on the race bulletin board. Registration Forms and SI’s will also be available Saturday morning by 9am. There is always a need for assistants, so contact Rob Maxey, Regatta Chair, at profrobj24 at yahoo . com to join in. ...and, don't forget our season awards at the Final Bash (November 8th). Sign up with Linda today!
We’ve had a year of great wind and plenty of water. The competitive spirit of our racers and supportive efforts of our non-racers made our major regattas both competitive and fun! To that end, I would like to thank all of those who have contributed their time, energy, and expertise to this year’s racing program. From maintaining club boats and equipment, to chairing regattas, to cooking hot dogs, the hard work of those volunteers is what keeps us in the water...whether we like to “sail fast” or “live slow.” Let’s keep it up! Did you hear about ISC's Naptown Regatta last weekend? Not too sure, but I heard we had several ECSC sailors there...Dr. Bob & Charlie in Highlanders. Think Tyler Andrews, RJ Graef, and Kaleigh White won the Thistle division...with RJ pointing out that there were two previous Thistle National Champions in the competition. Above: And even more Governor's Cup Regatta.

![]() Well, I can hardly believe October is here. I am also surprised that Tailer is still holding a grudge against me. In fact, just the other day he came walking down the dock in a huff...a huff with a purpose. He walked straight up to me, pulled off one of his dainty sailing gloves and slapped me ‘cross the cheek. He said, “Bailer, I challenge you to a duel...choose your weapon.” I replied “diplomacy." He curled his brow and asked, “You choose what?” Right: Bruce at the Governor's Cup Regatta. I explained to him that I had in one of my book shelves a fine Autobiography and if he gave me a minute, I could find a particular passage and maybe he would understand. Tailer replied “K.” After finding the book and flipping through the pages, I found this particular quote and read it to Tailer on the docks (with a very dramatic flair I might add). “In those early days, dueling suddenly became a fashion in the new territory of Nevada and by 1864, everybody was anxious too have a chance in the new sport. This was mainly for the reason that one was not able to thoroughly respect himself so long as he had not killed or crippled somebody in a duel or been killed or crippled in one himself. I was ambitious in several ways but I had entirely escaped the seductions of that particular craze. I had had no desire to fight a duel. I had no intention of provoking one. I did not feel respectable, but I got a certain amount of satisfaction out of feeling safe. I was ashamed of myself...but, I got along well enough. I had always been accustomed to feeling ashamed of myself anyway for one thing or another, so there was no novelty for me in the situation. I bore it very well.” - Autobiography of Mark Twain
I finished explaining to Tailer that I really did not want to fight. I wanted to work things out with him and maybe me could find a common bond...work together. Tailer laughed and said, “So, you’s a yeller belly is yah?” I said, "Hold on a minute, I think I have another quote." Left: More Governor's Cup. “I thoroughly disapprove of duels. I consider them unwise and I know they are dangerous...also, sinful. If a man should challenge me, I would take him kindly and forgivingly by the hand and lead him to a quiet retired spot and kill him.” - Autobiography of Mark Twain
What is my point? Well, I think the Board should outlaw dueling and work together for the good of the Club. Sail on, Sail on.... The Bailer

![]() Evan, it is always nice to see the Club is running well and the friends are having good times. The weather here is almost perfect and Lake Norman a great place to sail. But, as in Indy, we have almost no wind this time of the year. However, you can still swim in the warm water without blue algae. Keep the news coming and happy sailing. Mario Zambrono Right: Mario's new boat on Lake Norman. ============================ MACH I had great weather this weekend...no threat of outer-band thunder storms and down pours the wet crew had gone thru last weekend. This weekend's motley crew consisted of: High-Maintenance Joyce and Ask-A-Million-Questions Chuck as we set sail on Saturday morning. Light winds, so we educated Chuck as to the local wildlife preserve known as Passage Key. After the crew got an eye full of a naked woman applying SPF 50 (or was it 30) onto her male boy-toy's mast, we continued our cruise to Egmont Key. High-Maintenance Joyce's role this weekend was to teach Ask-A-Million-Questions Chuck all the tasks that involved possible finger nail breakage such as anchor duty. They dropped the rode into the water's deep and decided lunch was in order. The grill is on its last leg and has a lot of personality with all its little quirks (high heat or none at all). Hot Dogs were the fare of the day and the crew enjoyed a feast of kings.
Nothing like a swim less that 30 minutes after the tubes of death were consumed. Ask-A-Million-Questions Chuck was posted for Shark Watch due to the book he had brought for the weekend (Graphic Colored Pictures of Shark Attacks). High-Maintenance Joyce entered the water to do her Ester Williams impression when her high-pitched voice alerted us all to a Jellyfish attack which caused the MACH I crew to spring into action. We all know that the best thing for a jellyfish sting is to urinate on it. Chuck and I were both ready to man the fire hoses but vinegar (which I actually had onboard) and something from our mini medic kit did the trick (along with her Gin) for the pain. Right: Governor's Cup Regatta. We sailed down the coast of Anna Marie island...delightful sunset with camera flashes viewed from the beach let us know how lucky and blessed we were to see the sunset from the water. We anchored at Mar Vista for the night and the dinner fare was onion burgers which brought a tear to the crews eyes. The highlight of the next day was a coast guard plane flyover when we were sailing several miles off the coast of Longboat Key. The huge orange and white plane flew very low directly over us and tipped its wings. The colorful string of party flags were up on the boat and they had to approve as they spied the pirate flag waving hello in the breeze.
Until Next Time... Mark the Shark ==============================
Here’s a few photos from my Labor Day Weekend cruise from Boston to Martha’s Vineyard and through to Newport. We hit all the ports and tore it up! The boat is amazing! Sweet 80 footer! My friend runs this $3M, 80 footer for the owner full time. It lays in Newport, RI in the summer and the BVI’s in the winter. The owner uses the boat at most 1 weekend a month...the rest of the time we have access to cruise / party on it which is precisely what we did Labor Day weekend! How do I get so lucky for these trips, you ask? It's not luck! It's connections! Chris Murray

![]() WELL BOYS & GIRLS... What to write about this month... This past year has been full of sailing and teaching many young & older sailors. Over 80 would be sailors have sailed our little part of the world. Our Saturday Sailing 101 class had over 26 new sailors “learning how to do it.” The three-week sailing camp was a great success with the kids and our staff of Junior Sailors that run it: Ki Hickok, Erika Williams, Hanna Fisher, EJ Williams, and to the many other members who helped. Right: Eric at Lake Lemon. Eagle Ocean may be small to some sailors. But, with our juniors and support from Club members, we have earned the right to be called one of the top 5 sailing clubs in the mid-west! Don’t you think??? Our kids brought back to our little ocean many top awards racing in the I-LYA Bay Week 2008, Rider Cup Semi, and the Travelers Series that covers the lower Great Lakes area in US Sailing clubs. Our Club members make many soirées out to Top Grade Championships and also have brought home the gold. Our Club may be small, but we are one of the cradles in US sailing history for producing top helmsmen in the mid-west fleets...if not in US. Just my view...USA 996
Did You Know?
Junior Racing News RJ Greaf finished 1st in the Junior Class and 4th overall in “B” fleet racing against a Finn, Force 5's, and Lasers. RJ beat Wayne in 2 of 4 races and came from behind in one to finish 3rd in that race. Left: Kenton at Lake Lemon. Becca Hallstedt 2nd, “Had good speed.” Kat Petrucci 3rd, “Kept her head out of the boat.” Kenton Earnhart, Nicholas Muller, Katherine Jones, & Stuart Earnhart were in the middle to back of the pack.
Support Members Many “Thanks” go out to the good sailors of the Bloomington Yacht Club for their new beach area. Note: The Port Hole Inn had a fire early this year and will be open sometime next year. Not bad from the look of it, hope it makes it, had some good parties there...
