    Racing – February 2018

    Racing Seminar #1 Recap:

We would first like to thank everyone that turned-out for the first of the three Racing Seminars for 2018. There was a great turnout, 27+ racers! It was great to see everyone, and we know you are all excited as we are for the season to start!

Special thanks to our guest speakers Reagan Lessick and Adam Ondrejack. Reagan gave a great presentation and synopsis of her racing exploits at the Orange Bowl in Miami, while Adam updated us on ISC racing plans and schedule for 2018.

We would also like to thank Rich Fox for his continued dedication to ECSC. We are VERY lucky to have such a person that continues to take the fleets rhetoric and abuse, all while maintain a calm demeaner and his constant smile (we could all take a page for Rich’s book on how to conduct ourselves in calm & respectable manner). Rich has worked diligently to formulate some new PHRF ratings for ECSC in hopes of tightening up the fleets that will be implemented this coming season. Rich has dedicated himself for the past seven years or so and has complied a great deal of historical data that supports his adjusted PHRF ratings. We feel this is a great step forward to having very competitive racing series for years to come. Thank you, Rich!

Please sign up as soon as possible. Sign-up deadlines are 4/12/18 for Spring Series, 6/28/18 for Sumer Series, and 9/5/18 for Twilight Series. The Race Chairman will fill all open slots after the deadlines posted above. Captains & Crew will be obligated to switch or have covered their assigned RC Duties.

Here are a few excerpts that we’ve come across that pretty much sum-up RC Duty at ECSC and around the world. Enjoy!

    WTH? I’m On Race Committee?!

What would you rather do? Race or do race committee? Well, the answer is easy! We go to the trouble of buying boats, maintaining them, practicing with them, stocking the cooler for our crew, and most importantly – spending down marital credits to disappear for a day or two (the price varies according to season, mood, time of month, and whether or not we’ve been attentive to her/his needs) all because we want to sail and compete against other sailors!

So, lots of sailors moan about, bitch about, and even actively shirk their race committee duty, even though it’s glaringly obvious that if there is no race committee, there is no racing.

I’ve never really had a problem with doing race committee, though it often seems a shame when we have to pull from the fleet that is racing, thereby reducing the fleet by one or more boats, in order to form a race committee. But it is what it is, and we should all try and do our part with a smile and positive attitude.

We all have met (and maybe are) sailors who always seem quick to complain about a race committee. That seems unduly ungrateful, and most sailors endure whatever mysterious trials that the Race Committee puts them through because they’re RACING!, instead of stuck doing, well, Race Committee. But all of us, even if we try to be patient and keep our mouths shut, sometimes find ourselves wondering, “WTH is Race Committee up to?”

The best antidote for Race Committee grousing is, of course, to do Race Committee. It’s refreshing to see the fleet and the racing from the anchored perspective. It’s also a fun and interesting challenge to try and deliver lots of good racing, especially on Eagle Creek.

Next time we are racing, try not thinking “WTH?” Instead, try to think “They must have their reasons” …..up to a point, at least. ?

Race Chairman & Assistant Race Chairman:

ECSC is a great club, thanks to our members. We are fortunate to have all types of sailors and people (not just racers). We should all strive to conduct ourselves in a courteous & respectful manner whether we are on the water, off the water, social media, gatherings, etc.

Safety and Education – February 2018

Camp Registration is now open for 2018!   Camp weeks are June 18-22 and June 25-29 for more information, or to register on-line Click Here!  As usual interest in the summer sailing camp is very high, so I would definitely register as soon as possible since we only have so many spaces available.
The 2018 ECSC Junior Sailing Team schedule is beginning to firm up, when I have a better idea of exact dates, I’ll post it here.  The juniors have been working out indoor at Hoosier Heights rock climbing and weight lifting preparing for spring.  Wayne has been posting workout videos and photos on the ECSC Junior Sailing Facebook page, give it a “like” and support our Juniors and follow their progress.
We wrote about Reagan’s adventure to the Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta last month.  She got a lot of sailing in, improved her technique, and gained speed.  She spoke at the last race meeting to share her experiences with the many club members in attendance.  Below are some pictures from her week there, as well as our return to the snow.

    Publicity – Grounds Committee – February 2018

The Following is a report from our Grounds Committee Chair Geoff Endris:

We are off to a great start for 2018.  We have two of our most important jobs filled.  Roger Knapp has volunteered to perform water testing on our well water again this year.  This is a very important task as it allows us to open up our restrooms for the year.  Jim & Sherry Weir have volunteered to take over bathroom cleaning duties – again a very important task.

I sent out an email asking whether anyone wanted to join a volunteer committee to help plant and maintain the grounds flowers and other landscaping.  So far, I have one volunteer.  I am looking for 5-6 more to spread the workload out.  If you have a green thumb and want to help with the landscaping, please send me a note.

The focus for January and February is getting our volunteers lined up and getting bids for the grounds landscape contractor.  The landscape contractor is responsible for the following items:

    • Apply weed killer to keep weeds under control
    • Mow lawn areas (upper shelter, hillside, shoreline, camp area, juniors area)
    • Mow trailer field, partial weed trimming each month
    • Trim bushes at main shelter and trailer lot
    • Empty trash cans twice weekly
    • Apply mulch to flower beds
    • Water flower beds/pots

Last year we used an outside contractor.  Prior to that, we used a landscape company owned by a club member.  If there are any club members who want to bid on the work, send me a note (grounds@ecsaill.org) and I will send you an official bid request for your bid response.  Bids will be due mid-February and the vendor will be approved at the March board meeting.

We are getting ready for the Spring work party to be held on March 31st from 8:30 to noon.  Rain date is April 7th.  I have a number of projects lined up, so keep the first couple of weekends open.  Projects on the list include:

    ·       Install new LED security lights (5)
    ·       Install light switches & timers on security lights
    ·       Install a better rock barricade for septic macerator at main shelter
    ·       Build new firepit in campground are near the lower shelter
    ·       Install a concrete race shed floor
    ·       Repair the pump house electrical box
    ·       Install ropes on parking lot posts
    ·       Repair wiring under the Main shelter
    ·       Add flooring to race shed attic
    ·       Re-stain the Kayak deck
    ·       Install new rope lights for upper shelter stairs
    ·       Repair picnic tables
    ·       Paint PSC shed – Purdue students
    ·       Install a flagpole at the Purdue Race Shed

These are all in addition to the normal Spring work party tasks of unstacking picnic tables, repairing picnic tables, raking leaves, painting sheds, and sprucing up the grounds.  You can see from the list that all of these projects will help make our club safer and more enjoyable.  If one of those projects sounds interesting to you and have the requisite skills and/or tools, please consider volunteering.  You will earn valuable work credits and the club will look much nicer for your efforts.

The grounds committee will be making its “property walk” on March 10th to make a list of all repair, maintenance and capital projects for the year.  This may add to the projects list above and will help further define the work to be done on the Spring Work Party day.

    Commodore January 2018

It’s that time of year again!  Racing is done for the season, and most of our boats are on their trailers for the winter. It was a productive and fun year at ECSC!  Our Board, committees, and members accomplished a LOT this year.  Most notably, the lower shelter was nicely refitted with new support columns, and a concrete pad was poured under it to make it sturdy and safe for many more years. Cleanup continues around the lower shelter, and we hope it will be an inviting place for our members to utilize next year.  We also installed new LED lighting in our parking corral and at the boat ramp to provide a safer environment overall.    Additional rip-rap was added at the waterline between docks which will help prevent erosion.  These are just a few of the items completed alongside the many jobs that require the time and effort of all of our members every year to keep our club going strong. I would like to thank everyone who assisted for their service contributions this past year and encourage all members to keep it going next year.

Many of our services at the club are seasonally funded and have been discontinued until April of 2018. This includes ice machines, lawn service, and trash removal.  Please keep this in mind if you are at the club this winter, and please place your trash in the big dumpster or take it with you to dispose of at home.  The water has also been turned off for the winter, and the upper bathrooms are locked for the winter season.

Recently E.C.S.C. joined Yachting Club of America.  This gives us reciprocity benefits with over 700 clubs throughout America which club members can take advantage of while traveling next year. Information on this association can be found at www.ycaol.com.  We also still maintain our membership in I.L.Y.A.

Have a safe and happy holiday season with family and friends!
