Dear ECSC Members,

I hope everyone's Winter is going well.   With this warm weather, I'm thinking our sailing season may start early this year.   Thank you El Niño!   The Purdue students are always first to "break the ice" in March and get out onto the water.   Their sailing year essentially ends in late April (finals week is early May).   If the weather allows for it, feel free to join Purdue on the water in March & April.

Our amazing Membership Chair, Jesse Wriedt, has sent out registration links for everyone to register.   That email went out on January 30th.   Registration was due February 29th.   By the time you read this, that date is probably in the past...I most certainly hope all returning members got registered in time!

Here are some updates on the items I discussed in my last Telltales article:

Club Insurance:   I had a great conversation with our insurance agent.   She is both an agent and a lawyer, so she seems to really know her stuff.   I'm learning exactly what our plan currently covers and I'm considering updates to our plan based on Club needs.   Feel free to reach out to me directly if you want details on what our insurance covers.

Club Lease & Upper Trailer Parking:   No update on this yet.   Please see my article in last month's Telltales for the specifics on this topic.

Junior Sailing:   Katie Degrella and her daughter, Olivia, are taking the lead with Junior Sailing.   They are hosting 3 weeks of the sailing camp this year (dates below) and are organizing the ECSC Junior Race Team to travel and compete in the I-LYA Travelers Series circuit this summer (this covers Lake Erie from Toledo area over to east of Cleveland).   We will be hosting a Junior Sailing Meeting in April and are looking for volunteers to help the Junior Sailing Team this year.   I can tell you, it's a VERY fun reason to travel this summer, and you get to support our junior sailors.

JUNIOR SAILING CAMP DATES 2024:
June 10 - 14 (Ages 8-12)
June 17 - 21 (Ages 11-17)
June 24 - 28 (Ages 8-12)

I think that's everything for now.   See you guys at the Club in a month or two!

Facilities

Mostly waiting for better weather, like most of us.

Club Water will be turned on toward the end of March.

Wake-up-the-Club work party either the second or third weekend of April.   We will have a big dumpster for the work party to help clean up the Club of the stuff we don't really need any more.

No big projects planned other than the docks...which are to be installed by April 15th.

DO NOT use F dock or D dock until the new docks/slips are in place.   These are the two docks to the left of the launching ramp when looking from land.

We will let you know via Facebook and E-Mail when it is safe to use the new system.

Hello Fellow Sailors! Who’s looking forward to the 2024 Sailing Season and Social Events for the Club?   We couldn’t pull off any of these events without our amazing and awesome volunteers!   If there are any events or projects you’d be specifically interested in hosting or helping with, please let us know!   For everyone who designated social as an area where you’d like to volunteer this year when you renewed your membership, we’ll be contacting you to see which event(s) would be a good fit.   If you are new to the Club, these events are a great way to meet other members.

Our social season always kicks off with our Mother’s Day Brunch in May and ends with the Final Bash in November.   Below is the list of events for this year.

Mother’s Day Brunch – May 12th

Memorial Day Weekend Cookout – May 25th

Father’s Day Brunch – June 16th

Members,

Continued progress is being made to improve and expand the Racing Program at ECSC this next season.   The second Winter Race meeting was just completed with good attendance.   As important topics for discussion were identified at the last meeting in January, at this meeting we made some decisions regarding these topics.   Clearer criteria and qualifications for the Blue and White Fleets were made with the oversight of our Fleet Captains:   Jerry Brickley and Les Miller working with Rich Fox.   A final recommendation and document was voted on and accepted.   The fleet captains will implement these new definitions and all will be ready for the start of the racing season in April.   The Red Fleet decided to move in the direction of having one design fleet racing this year with separate J22 and J24 racing fleets.

The group considered having two races on Sundays instead of just one.   This had significant support, but it was decided to leave this to the discretion of the Sunday race Committee depending on the weather and the number of racers interested at the time.   Only the first race will count for the series standings but the additional races on Sunday could be used by particular fleets in their series scoring if they desire.   Given the initial favorable way racers felt about pursuit races, there will be more pursuit races on Sundays this year and the PRO Group will work out an effective and efficient way to run these races.   No more than half of the Sunday races will be pursuit races.

John Kohne awarding Karl Guerra the 1st Annual Volunteer of the Year Award

The thought of having food provided for Sunday post-races (as it is for Wednesday night races) was felt to be not feasible given the variable time many stopped sailing.

An exciting new offering for racers is the scheduling of green-fleet races on Saturdays.   Many keel-boat racers own green fleet boats but they defer to racing their large boats in all regularly-scheduled Club races.   The thought is that by having green-fleet races on Saturday (for many who would not otherwise race their green-fleet boat) may do so on Saturdays when there is no other fleet-boat racing.   Tom Lauer is the fleet captain for the green fleet and will be working on giving this concept a go.   If you are interested in this offering, please give Tom a call.

Finally, we will have enough PRO racing assistants and food provisioners for the 2024 racing season.   We are very grateful for those volunteers who have come forward to make the program more enjoyable for our racing members.   For those of you who are racers, this means that we will be able to do away with the 7-point penalty this year.

More to come as the season approaches – stay tuned!!

Hello Members!

March 1st is the official start to our 2024 season, and there are many changes to be aware of.   I am busy putting member packets together, and working hard to make sure renewal is seamless.

A few reminders for all members, new and experienced:

-Rich Fox has put together a member guide with relevant information for all of us to keep up to date on and refresh ourselves on how the Club handles business.

-All boats & trailers need to be out of the car corral before Mother’s Day.

-When you receive your stickers in April, please have them affixed ASAP...a boat audit happens June 1st. Stickers go on the PORT BOW, and PORT TRAILER TONGUE.

Please keep in mind as you buy and sell boats, Membership should be advised.   With that, I would encourage you to remind the buyer to contact Membership to let me know they need stickers.   You should also notify Membership of your sale.   Unfortunately, several members saw winter storage fees on their invoice because the buyer never updated the stickers.   An ounce of effort will result in prevention of frustration at renewal and keep the process easier for everyone.

Cheers to a safe and fun 2024 sailing season!

A note from our treasurer, Amy Miller:   I wish to share that we received a mailed invitation from North Cape Yacht Club of LaSalle, Michigan.   All members of ECSC are welcome to enjoy privileges this season at their club.

As a parent following both our kids through our Club's youth sailing program, we found that North Cape was one of the more friendly and fun sailing clubs to visit during the youth summer regattas.   And, I believe our Club has joined a few national reciprocity sailing organizations - allowing access to their facilities.   That means, always carry your ECSC membership card with you when traveling!!

And, better yet, offer to help chaperone one of youth Traveler Series regattas this summer to a Lake Erie area sailing club.   Every such regatta is a great adventure.

Eight Bells for Tom Goble

It is with a heavy heart, and perhaps a tear or two, that we bid farewell to our dear friend and former ECSC member, Tom Goble, who set sail for the great beyond on February 20, 2024.   Tom was more than just a member...he was the wind beneath our sails from 1987 to 2007 and reigning supreme as Commodore in the memorable year of 2000.   If you've ever hoisted a drink at one of our Club parties, you owe a debt of gratitude to Tom, who ingeniously repurposed a $5 bowling trophy from a flea market into the stuff of legends—the Club Party Trophy of 1993!   That award lives on much to the chagrin of those who have won it and had to display it in their homes (or garages)!   Tom sailed his beloved Catalina 25, “Desperado”, a vessel that weathered both storms and shenanigans on the open water.

In addition to being our nautical navigator, Tom served as a beacon of law and order as an Indiana State Trooper.   Despite his badge, he couldn't escape the clutches of fate, leaving behind his daughters Laura and Krista, six grandchildren, and a great-grandchild who will undoubtedly inherit his love for adventure.

So, here's to you, Tom, may the seas be calm, the winds forever at your back, and may your legacy live on in the tales of misadventures and laughter that you've left behind.

Fair winds and following seas, old friend!!
