As summer starts to give way to early fall, we’ve been treated to some of the finest sailing days of the season—brisk breezes, golden sunsets, and just enough challenge on the water to keep us sharp, with the exception of a few windless days. Whether you’ve been racing, cruising, or simply enjoying the serenity of an evening sail, it’s been a joy to see so many of you out on the water. We have just a couple short months left of the season. We are working on finalizing a couple of projects for the season. As many of you know we are in need of a new/used aircraft carrier. The one we have has served us well for over 20 years!! More news to come! If you are interested in holding a spot on the board, please let us know! We are working on building our slate for November elections. See you on the water,

Hello Fellow Sailors! We blinked and August is over! For September, we have two events…Labor Day Cookout and Lobsterfest. A huge Thank You to David Knapp and crew for handling Labor Day for us. Come on out Monday, September 1st at 4pm to enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs, and perfect weather! Don’t forget to bring a side dish or dessert to share. Lobsterfest will be on September 27th at 6pm. The lobsters are flown in fresh and live from the East Coast, then boiled right at our shelter house by experienced volunteers. The steaks are marinated overnight in a special mix and grilled to perfection by our grill masters. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share as these delicious meats need delicious accompaniments. We will have Chris and Pam Gordin, with Tongue and Groove Productions, providing music for this event, so make sure to wear your dancing shoes! The cost of a lobster or steak dinner is $30 per member and $35 for non-members, or $60/$70 if you would like a surf and turf. Please RSVP with your meal preferences and make payment at this link: https://ecsail.org/event-registration/2025_lobsterfest There is still plenty of fun to be had this social season! Here are our remaining social events:
Labor Day Cookout – September 1st 4pm The remaining events held at the Club are pitch-in style events. The Club will provide the main dishes and drinks, along with tableware. Lobsterfest is a RSVP and pre-payment event with options of lobster, steak, or surf and turf. So starting thinking now of what sides and desserts go well with these incredible meats! The Final Bash is a catered event and will be held at the Colts Complex, so bring your appetite and dancing shoes! Our shelter houses have been popular this year for family gatherings, graduations, birthday parties, and other events. If you are interested in reserving any of the shelters located on the Club grounds for an event, you can find the reservation request form on our website at http://ecsail.org/reserve. Please complete and submit for Commodore and Social approval. Depending on the number of guests, deposits and fees may apply. It is limited to 100 guests due to parking limitations. You may find all social and private events on the ECSC calendar located on the website. We are still looking to round out our crews for each of our remaining events. If you are interested in earning work credits, meeting new people, learning more about how the events are done, please let us know! It’s always fun working with new faces, longtime friends, and people who love and appreciate our Club as much as we do! If you have any questions, please always feel free to reach out to us at social@ecsail.org!

Racers, The racing program has been enjoying the blessing of cooler and windier conditions and not having the cancellation frequency of our spring race season. Attendance and competition have increased. We are gearing up for a busy September race season. We are looking back on successful Single-Handed Regatta and the Chasing Bubbles event. Thanks to all the volunteers that made these events so enjoyable. In September, we have the Indy 200 on September 6th which is being led by Jerry and Wendy Brickley. The Radio-Controlled Regatta on September 13th being put together by Rich Fox. The Governor’s Cup will be a week later than usual on September 27th and 28th coinciding with the Lobster Fest. Purdue’s major collegiate regatta will be on the weekend of September 20th. Regarding the equipment side of the racing program, the Aircraft Carrier motor has gone to rest, and the Aircraft Carrier itself is reaching its productive end of life. The race committee is looking at a proposal to replace all this ageing equipment and present to the board. We hope you are enjoying the racing season and hope to see you on the water and on the race course.

Hello fellow sailors!
My name is Michael Denney and I was elected to the board at the recommendation of our amazing Secretary, Rich Fox, a little under 3 years ago now. Initially, I started out in the Publicity position, and while I was handling the Telltales and membership communication, for the first couple of years most of the tasks I was handling were technology-related — reworking our website, maintaining website content for racing and membership, and assisting membership with any technical aspects. Last year the board voted to create the position that I have been in for this year — the Technology Chair. This has allowed me to focus more closely on the technology and IT aspects of the Club. Maintaining our website and the security of our Club information and technological infrastructure is a constant and ongoing responsibility that I have absolutely loved helping the Club with. I have still helped Publicity and Membership with email communication, but my day-to-day tasks have been more focused on what happens behind the scenes. I largely transitioned the club and board members to addresses owned and operated by the Club on the Club's domain. For example, you can reach me, or any future Technology Chair, at technology@ecsail.org. All other ECSC Officers and Chairs can also be reached at their appropriate @ecsail.org email addresses. This helps with continuity when a chair or officer position changes, since all email history is retained and available to the new person. It also makes it easier for members to reach board members and chairs without needing to look up who is in which position or search the directory. Speaking of the membership directory, I was also able to roll out the online directory lookup [https://www.ecsail.org/membership-directory/]. I coordinated with Perry Cameron, former Membership Chair and author of the software the Club runs, to make this happen. This has allowed all members to get an up-to-date copy of the directory at any time without exposing it to the general public. Additionally, many of you may be aware of the RSVP / Event Registration system I created for the Club that was used for the Beach Party this year. In coordination with the Social Chair, Jen Curtis, online registration as well as credit card payment streamlined the process and made the event easier to manage for Social. To say that I have enjoyed volunteering for the Club and serving on the board in the Publicity and Technology positions would be an understatement. It has been my absolute pleasure to volunteer for the Club and to work for the Club in these chair positions. I am up for re-election this year for another 3-year term and I am hopeful that I am given the opportunity by the membership, all of you, to continue serving the Club in this role. Thank you — all of you — for being what makes Eagle Creek Sailing Club so special!

Junior Racing is very excited to report we started our 2025 racing season with 5 team members and ended the season with 9! Great Job to our coaches, Olivia DeGrella and Kate Weigand. And, special thank you to both coaches for all they invested in our team’s development this summer. We had 4 kids racing Optis and 5 racing Lasers. The season closed with a Regatta at ECSC and lovely picnic with food provided by two of our families. A special thank you to the Capehart and Imler families for their contributions. We are so grateful for all the support of our racing parents. Our Junior Racing community is a fun and supportive group and there is always room for more join. All of us are looking forward to 2026 racing season. If you know a child who may be interested in racing with our ECSC Junior Sailing Team, please have their parents contact Katie DeGrella for details and how to join. Junior Sailing Camp had its most successful summer ever! We are so happy to report, no camper injuries this summer. Safety is a top priority for our Director, Olivia DeGrella. And, with 4 weeks of camp and 2 follow-up Junior skills clinics, we had a record number of kids learning to sail. Our goal for next year is to be able to fund the addition of a 420 sailboat to our racing fleet. Finally, we had a lovely article written about one of our junior racers. I am including the link to the article in this month’s update. Enjoy!

Dear members, The Harbour Master Committee has only one or two chores that are no fun for anyone, like checking stickers or boat audits for winter storage. But, the worst is our Derelict Boat Audits. We walk around taking pictures of someone's beauty...just wishing to be loved. But instead, being attacked by the sun, the rain, and time. Anyway, I'm sending out derelict boat notifications this week...so keep an eye out for those. And remember, boat wrap doesn't last forever. Old tires go flat, running rigging can rot, and your boat misses you. See you the lake....
