    Safety & Education Committee Update

On March 25th, Safety & Education facilitated the “Prepping Your Boat for the Upcoming Season” seminar. It was well attended and received positive feedback!

The next seminar scheduled based upon the results of the Safety & Ed Survey will be “MOB Training & Other Ways To Stay Safe.” The first half of the class will be on land to review boating safety and sailing safety tips. The second half of the class will be conducted on the water with man overboard drills and scenarios. Bring your swimsuit, wetsuit, and PFD!

Date and Time TBD once volunteer instructor is confirmed.

Coast Guard Safety Vessel Checks will be offered at no cost to our members throughout the month of July. Multiple days and times will be offered to accommodate people’s schedules. Look for a registration link soon.

DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion)  Committee Update

A DEI sub committee has been formed under the umbrella of Safety and Education in an effort to diversify our club and share the wonderful sport of sailing with all communities. Current committee members are Abigail Harlan, Al Wilkins, Amy Miller, and Katie DeGrella. We are excited to share that the below DEI Statement was accepted in the May 8th board meeting!

Eagle Creek Sailing Club strives to celebrate the diverse people and families that make up Marion County and our surrounding communities. We are committed to providing equitable, safe, and inclusive access to sailing, social activities, racing programs, and sailing education.

This initiative is in its infancy, and the committee will work hard to establish short and long term goals. Two organizations that were considered and consulted as we developed this statement were US Sailing and Indy Parks.

For more information on what US Sailing is doing in this area, visit https://www.ussailing.org/diversity-equity-and-inclusion/

For more information on what Indy Parks is doing in this area, visit:  https://www.indy.gov/activity/diversity-equity-and-inclusion-at-indy-parks

Thank you to the members who have already shown support and enthusiasm for this initiative! If you would like to become involved, please contact Abigail Harlan at education@ecsail.org

    Safety & Education June 2022

    Little Free Library
The Little Free Library arrived this week! It will be located by the race shed and contain books and resources of all kinds. We encourage you to share sailing resources such as books on navigation, engines, cruising, racing, and just general sailing. Please also feel free to contribute children’s books and any fun reads that people may enjoy during a relaxing afternoon on the boat.
    Vessel Safety Checks
With a Vessel Safety Check you will have the peace of mind that your boat meets federal safety standards and that in an emergency you will have the necessary equipment to save lives and summon help. In many cases, boating insurance agencies offer discounts for vessels which undergo a Vessel Safety Check every year. If your boat does not pass, no citation is issued at that time. Instead, you are provided a written report on how to correct any discrepancies. Flotilla 1-7 of Castleton will be performing Vessel Safety Checks this year on either 7/9 or 7/23. Confirmation will be received this week.
    First Aid Kits
First Aid kits are fully stocked.. Should you notice anything needing to be replenished, please let Abby Harlan know.
    Yoga
Yoga is behind as the yoga instructor is no longer available due to personal travel. As soon as a new schedule is set, it will be shared!

Safety and Education has been busy behind the scenes ordering First Aid supplies, scheduling fire extinguisher inspections, and working with the Coast Guard Auxiliary to plan Vessel Safety Checks. Lots of fun educational programming is in the works too!

    Safety & Education February 2022

As we await Spring, the Winter Training Series continues at Indianapolis Sailing Club.  Most recently, pro sailor, Andrew Kerr, facilitated the North-U Trim Sails Seminar on February 12th where four Eagle Creek members were in attendance.  Next month’s free training is on March 5th and will cover basic racing tactics; don’t miss it!

This season, Safety and Education will be offering expanded programming to meet the diverse needs of all ages and abilities at the club.  We will off free monthly Saturday morning workshops on topics such as outboard-engine maintenance, sail care and repair, useful knots, and basic-boating safety will be offered.  Look for more information as volunteer instructors and workshop topics are finalized.

ECSC is also partnering with two new community partners in planning exciting educational opportunities for all members.  The Eagle Creek Park Ornithology Center will be facilitating open-water bird-watching workshops, and the Indiana Astronomical Society (IAS) will be offering a free celestial navigation course.  Additionally, IAS will be hosting star-viewing parties on our grounds where members will be able to use high-tech equipment to view the night sky alongside knowledgeable and seasoned astronomers.  More info to come as these partnerships develop.

Being fit and strong enough to keep yourself, your boat, and your crew safe while sailing is vital…particularly as we graduate to bigger boats and waters.  This year ECSC will offer regular free yoga classes that focus on balance and strength.  Look for more info and the link to registration in April.

Safety, as always, is a priority for the club.  The US Coast Guard Auxiliary will be conducting free vessel safety checks in late spring; dates will be shared when finalized.  CPR & First Aid will also be offered at the club this summer.

Finally, if you have any suggestions for educational programming or would like to host a training/educational opportunity for the club, please contact me, Abby Harlan at apharlan15@gmail.com.

    ECSC Secretary October 2021

The Board has been very busy this year making several changes to the Bylaws and the General Rules to help improve the qualify of the grounds and facilities at the club for everybody’s enjoyment.
This past summer, the Board approved a new derelict boat and trailer policy that is now part of the club’s General Rules. If you keep your boat in a fairly clean and respectable condition, then you should have no worries about the hefty fine associated with this policy..
In September, the Board passed several changes to the structure of the Board. Here is a summary:

        1. Created a new position of Facilities Manager who manages the Grounds Committee.

        2. The Vice Commodore is no longer the chair of the Grounds Committee

        3. The Grounds Committee is now five members and includes Facilities Manager, Harbor Master, Vice Commodore, Treasurer, and one Member-At-Large

        4. Harbormaster Committee will focus on improved communications and management of wet slips and dry parking assignments

At the upcoming Final Bash, Commodore Chuck Goff will be hosting and running the Annual Meeting of the Members. During this time, there will be awards and recognition and an introduction of the new Officers, Committee Chairs, and members who have been elected to serve on the Board. You will also have the opportunity to see how the club transitions its leadership during a few brief formal ceremony.
For next year, I would like to do a better job of communicating with the membership to encourage members to serve on the Board. This will mean making sure I share with you what the deadlines are for you to submit your name as a nominee.
Finally, I will be at the Final Bash to collect ballots. Ballots will be available for you to complete. Voting closes at 7:00 PM sharp.
